I’ve been rooting you guys to react to this for a while. Finally. Glad y’all enjoyed it. Another great cop film, if you haven’t done yet, is Street Kings. Another stacked cast starring Keanu Reaves and Forest Whitaker.

Finally someone hears my plea! I have been recommending this to different reactors for over a year and I am glad you and Sam were the first. Without a doubt one of my top 3 Stallone movies and your reaction was as I expected from such good honest reactors. Glad you enjoyed it. I never miss it when it is on.

I've never understood why this film isn't mentioned or talked about more. It might be the very definition of underrated. Besides "Rocky," this is one of my favorite Stallone roles.

It is a classic film and actually one of my favorite Sylvester Stallone films besides Rocky and First Blood. Thank you for the tribute to Ray Liotta who is a great actor and is missed.

Cop Land was the film that finally got Stallone the respect he deserved as a serious actor, and not as just some action movie hero. Whether they liked the film or not, most critics agreed Stallone proved himself here. And what a great cast. RIP Ray Liotta.

This role actually hurt Stallone's career. Given the cast the movie dramatically underperformed at the box office. Stallone struggled to get any roles for years after Cop Land. Ultimately Stallone had to return to Rocky (2006) to get his career back on track.

@@bluecollartradesman715 Yeah, it's wild how Stallone was so great in this film, but Hollywood wouldn't hire him to do anything else like it. Hacky action crap if anything at all. I think everyone, Stallone included, took the wrong lessons from Cop Land. Seemed like they decided "never make anything like this again" instead of "make more stuff like this as often as possible!"

@@bluecollartradesman715 it actually made money (67 million on a 15 million budget) and even was a critical success but even stallone went on record to say it messed up his career for a long time. he started doing straight to vhs movies & spy kids 3. he did do a movie I loved called Get Carter but it wasn't a box office success. Rocky Balboa, Rambo 4 & the expendables put him back on the map though

@@rxtsec1 I never said it didn't make money. I said it underperformed. The studios were expecting it to make more than it did. Unfortunately Stallone carried that burden. It's funny how the entertainment business operates.

At the time it was all about the ensemble cast. A downer for me somewhat. First thing that came to mind after the passing of Ray.

For a long time i thought the story was way too far fetched but when i found out it was based on reality i appreciated it a whole lot more. I did always liked Sly's part.

I met Robert Patrick at a convetion here in Sweden and got his autograf. I watched this movie when it came out 5 times in one week becuase i liked it. So i asked him about how it felt working on Cop Land with so many famous actors and what he thought about the ending. He said: "It was a great sqript and i never thought i was going to work with so many great actors. The ending is something we never seen in a movie. I am very proud of that movie and probably my best work i have done". For me it is a good movie that not alot of people have seen. It is a good movie, but i think they have to much characters and if you watch it for the first time, it's very hard to follow. That is why sometimes you have to watch a movie again to see how it follows and how good it is.

This was one of those films where the actors all knew how good it was before filming. They all jumped for roles, no matter how small or how little they were to be paid. I LOVE those kinds of films. They are special and quite rare.

When Liotta tells Stallone that a Cop racing to a crime scene "You wanna come at these guys head on?!?! No! You move diagonal...". I always remember that line as a metaphor for life.

Stallone was really good in the role for he's totally playing against his normal type and he let himself get pudgy for the role instead of being ripped like usual.

The 1997 Stockholm Film festival gave Stallone the Best Actor award for "Cop Land", which is well deserved, I think.

Such a fantastic movie! Everyone is great - Stallone, Liotta, Keitel - everyone. This and "Girl, Interrupted" put director James Mangold on the map. And for the record, the film didn't get "mixed" reviews (they were generally good), nor was it originally intended to be a western. The town of Garrison is inspired by Mangold's home town of Washingtonville, NY - a home to many NYPD cops - and the film was based on his experiences living there.

It was, however, something of a commercial flop (although it did turn a profit) especially considering the cast involved - and deserves waaaay more love and recognition than it gets.

Some scenes were actually filmed in Washingtonville in 96. I was attending Washingtonville MS at the time, and saw the film in the theaters in Newburgh when it came out in August of 97.

This was a movie I went into opening weekend "Blind" and ended up being impressed by both the cast and the story. It's hard to believe this was director James Mangold's second film. The style and pacing is the work of a veteran director.

Fantastic reaction to a movie I only saw the one time! Better than I remembered! Man, this cast really was stacked! Harvey Keitel is the ULTIMATE dirty cop in "Bad Lieutenant" (1992 - same year he did "Reservoir Dogs"). De Niro's first movie with Scorsese is the excellent "Mean Streets" (1973)......and that movie stars Harvey Keitel as well....these guys have a long history together (and indeed, Keitel appears in "The Irishman"). And 8:24 that's Cathy Moriarty....De Niro's wife in "Raging Bull"! Underrated actress! Really enjoyed rewatching it with you, I'll have to rewatch it in full soon. Thanks, S &D!

One of my favorite cop movies. A truly underrated gem! The 90s were special for that kind of movie. Love Liotta and Sly on this, and others cool actors like Robert Patrick, the legend Harvey Keitel, etc. Lot of Sopranos guys in this movie too. Pride and Glory is another cool cop movie you could react. Great reaction as always!

Cool movies but i wouldn't say they are "cool cop movies" unless you admire crooked pigs being worse than the criminals they are paid to pursue. Good movies for waking people up and showing them how dirty these people are capable of being.

I’ve seen this movie recommended so often on various reaction channels and finally I get to see someone do it! I saw it in the theater originally, and thought it was a very good film, and interesting role for Stallone.

He had a small part, but one of the most memorable characters was Method Man as the criminal who kills the husband cop. He kinda steals that scene!

The casting of Stallone in this film is so good. At the time he was thought of as nothing more than an action movie actor and seeing him next to all these highly respected actors already made him the underdog in the cast. I went into it thinking why is he in this when a better actor could do the job better. I was completely wrong and he more than proved himself as a good actor. That dismissal of him as an actor at the time perfectly parallels the character's role as the Sheriff of Copland who is dismissed as a joke who no one really respects among a town full of "real" cops. Great casting.

It actually reminded me of the pre-Rocky actor Stallone, where he appeared in cop shows like Kojak (1975) and Police Story (1975) or the movie Farewell, My Lovely (1975).

the Director James Mangold has also made many more spectacular films that include Girl Interrupted, Identity, Walk the Line, 3 10 to Yuma, Logan, was nominated for the Best Film Academy Award for the movie Ford v Ferrari, and hes lined up to Direct the next Indiana Jones film. Stallone loved the script so much he was willing to forgo his usual wage (around 20m a movie at the time) and work for minimum wage to get this made on a smaller budget. Once he'd done so, everyone else got on board for pretty much the same deal and the film got made for around 16m in total.

I worked at Planet Hollywood NY (the original on 57th st) when this movie was being filmed. Stallone used to watch the dailies (what they shot that day) in the PH screening room downstairs so that the production could save money. You'd know when he was there because all of our managers would be on edge.. LOL.. They were nice enough to give us employees passes to the Ziegfield theater premiere and the wrap party.

Stallone steals the show in a very understated and compelling performance, whilst acting some very big names off the stage - he should have got an Oscar nod at least. Great film.

I'm very pleased that you chose to watch this film, and that you liked it so much. Copland came out near the end of the summer of 1997, which was a summer where there was a lot of movies I was very excited for, but was disappointed by so many of them. Jurassic Park 2, Speed 2, Batman & Robin, Air Force One, The Fifth Element, Contact, G.I. Jane, a new action movie with Mel Gibson and Julia Roberts...I was eagerly anticipating each of these films, and they were all disappointing to one degree or another. This low-key drama was one of the best of the lot, which I was not expecting. (For the record, the movies that summer that I did like were Men In Black, Face/Off and Con Air.) You probably noticed that the director was James Mangold. He's become one of my favorite filmmakers, even though he doesn't have a particularly distinctive style--he just makes one solid, entertaining flick after another. Logan, Ford vs Ferrari, 3:10 To Yuma, Walk The Line, Identity and Kate & Leopold are all great. This guy doesn't have the public profile of Christopher Nolan or Quentin Tarantino, nor does he specialize in any particular genre. Give him a good script and decent actors, and he'll deliver a winner with very little fuss.

I enjoyed Air Force One, I didn't mind the first half of Jurassic Park 2. The second half (San Diego) totally lost my interest. Speed 2 and Batman & Robin sucked big time. I didn't care for the Fifth Element when it came out, but I don't mind it now. Maybe that's just because modern Bruce Willis movies suck. I didn't expect to like Men In Black but actually liked it. I always liked Cop Land.

The scene where they try to kill Michael Rappaport in the pool and he gets away is one of the amazing modern noir scenes to me. IT reminds me of a similar scene from the movie "Heat". Of coure the climactic shootout at the end is such a killer showdown. Love it.

Great reaction to a great film! The next hidden gem that needs a look at is a 1995 film called "Strange Days"...that also has a great cast, a great story line and was also over shadowed...

One of the most underrated films ever, and my favorite Stallone performance. Another great 90s cop movie is State of Grace with Sean Penn, Ed Harris, and Gary Oldman.

Well you know I requested this a few times and I'm over the moon you did it and reacted to it so well, it truly is a movie that deserves to be on the radar way more than it is. Not sure why so many great movies of 1997 like this, Jackie Brown, L.A. Confidential, Donnie Brasco, Conspiracy Theory, Breakdown and several others just don't get the spotlight much these days.

Awesome one of my faves definitely a hidden gem which as you say is weird considering the cast. Although looking at what was released in 97 it was a massive year for blockbuster's from Titanic and Liar Liar to Con Air.

Interestingly, Stallone later said that the film was bad for his career. It got good critical reviews and made money, but not a huge amount. Stallone felt that it increased the perception at the time that his ability to make blockbusters was over. I've got to disagree with Stallone about this. It was nice to see him doing something different and his performance was generally lauded, but he seems to value a super high grossing movie over critical praise

Actually Sly feels negative about Cop Land because Harvey Weinstein screwed him over. He thought it would be the beginning of a career Renaissance and that he'd be able to do more dramatic roles. Weinstein promised Sly things and didn't deliver on them (probably because the box office wasn't high on this).

Another movie that has a great cast and has flown under the radar is Sleepers. It has Brad Pitt, Dustin Hoffman, Robert De Niro, and Kevin Bacon. It is... uncomfortable subject matter to say the least, but it is worth it.

This might legitimately be a case of a cast being TOO stacked. It's an ensemble, and it's harder to keep up with than even a regular large cast because every single person is a recognisable face, and often a name. Even beyond the main (huge) cast, there's all kinds of The Wire actors in the weeds. It's nuts. Anyway, great movie

With the passing of Ray Liotta, I was waiting to see someone react to this film. It's one of Stallone's best performances and yet most people don't talk about it. When this first came out I was more aware for Sly as Rocky, Rambo, and many others, so this surprised me to see him being serious with a role like this. So glad you two enjoyed the movie, and if anyone has not watched this they seriously need to check it out.

Another sleeper movie is 1996 Sleepers which stars a nice ensemble of actors.

I remember seeing this in the theater and being into it. The performances from everyone, including Stallone are stellar. Love the tension, the cast, the dialogue, the scenes between Stallone and Deniro. Very underrated flick. Stallone definitely held his own. Plus, Ray Liotta was a show stealer as always. He will be missed.

@@LarryFleetwood8675 I've seen all of those except Forever Mine and Control. I loved Unlawfully Entry and No Escape. Turbulence was a blast when it came out. Has some bad 90's CGI but Liotta killed it in that role. He's always great in Something Wild.

@@samantha_schmitt If you are going to watch Get Carter make sure it is the original 1971 British version with Michael Caine. It is miles better than Stallone’s Hollywood remake. I would also recommend the original 1969 version of The Italian Job with Michael Caine, again it is miles better than the Hollywood remake. Edited to the correct the years.

When people say that Stallone cant act, i usually refer them to the first Rambo and Cop land. I wish he had done more like this, because he is really talented. As everybody says, such an underrated movie. Great cast, great acting, great storyline.

Yesssss finally Copland! Definitely a underrated gem film! Sylvester Stallone gave a terrific understated performace in this film. He gained 40 pounds for this role and was deeply committed to play against his action character persona!

When Stallone put on weight for this movie. Made me realise he is dedicated an in love with his job. The script writing for him being deaf at the end from gunshots really set the atmosphere unlike other movies

I like to consider myself as somewhat of a movie buff. As a child of the 70s and 80s, I think I’ve seen pretty much most of the movies that you guys have reviewed so far. I love watching reaction videos and I do follow some other people on KZfaq to see their reactions. I discovered your page a few months ago, and I gotta say that I thoroughly enjoy your page and your reviews the most. Both of you guys are so genuine and authentic. And watching these movies over with you is really an absolute joy. You guys don’t try to be too witty with sarcastic remarks by making fun of anything you’re watching. YES! Ray Liotta's dialogue with Sly in this movie about perpetual motion could well be applied to many things such as how we get public servants in power to actually serve us if you think about it

To me this is one of the most underrated movies and I was excited when I read you decided to react to it. Whether Stallone should have won an Oscar for "Freddy" can be debated, but to not even receive a nomination is just plain wrong. Your reaction did not disappoint and you should definitely not worry about being off: Copeland is such an amazingly well written script with many angles/characters making it almost impossible for first time viewers to figure it out before the final show-down.

I'm glad you liked it!❤ Still one of my favorite Stallone movies! But please look at it this way: you not instantly knowing whats going on is a pretty good sign, isn't it? It would be boring if you could foresee everything that will happen. This is a rather small scale movie, no huge explosions and so on, just a tight crime story that keeps you guessing and on the edge on your seats!

I think that this was overlooked at the time, because it had Stallone in a serious leading role and that overshadowed who else was in the cast - having only known Stallone for Rocky and action movies, people may have thought that it wouldn't be that great, but it's actually a really good movie and Stallone plays Freddy very well. The deaf shoot-out at the end is astonishing.

Amazing reaction. Loved it. Stallone did a trio of films in the early 90s that were great. This, the awesome action film Cliffhanger and a super-underrated disaster fil called Daylight.

For your next Stallone movie, please react to 1975's Death Race 2000. It stars Stallone, David Carradine who played Bill in the Kill Bill movies & Martin Kove who plays Sensei Kreese in Cobra Kai. I think you two will like it & find the story/plot a little disturbing, yet maybe even funny. Lol thx & keep the best reactions coming👊

Two other often overlooked good Stallone non-action hero movies to recommend are: 1) Victory from 1981 co-starring Michael Cain and Max von Sydow, and 2) Nighthawks also from 1981 co-starring Rutger Hauer and Billy Dee Williams.

You guys aren't alone in feeling "off your game" for pretty much the entire run time. That was basically everyone I've ever talked to whose seen this, myself included. But I think that's partly the hallmark of a great story. Fantastic performances from Stallone, Deniro, and Ray Liotta, and another great reaction from you two. I know you're kind of on a Stallone kick right now, but I suggest NO ESCAPE with Ray Liotta. Super slept-on sci-fi/action thriller from 1994. And pretty timely as it's set in 2022.

Great movie. I bought this VHS many moons ago probably in '98/'99. I hadn't heard of it at the time but when I saw it in the store and it had Stallone, De Niro, Keitel and Liotta on the cover it was an instant purchase.

I really enjoyed watching "COPLAND" here a lot. The cast is Impressive as it is but given the storyline for me makes this one of my favorites . Good film with great cast and also with my favorite actress from 1990s Annabella Sciorra (wife of abusive husband-cop in the film). I'd recommend you to watch indie film hit from early 90s "Jungle Fever" (by Spike Lee) with Sciorra and Wesley Snipes. Or "What Dreams may come" (1998) with Sciorra and Robin Williams - great film.

Then, of course Stallone and DeNiro play fun with their boxing personas in Grudge Match (2013). DeNiro had to really convince Stallone to do that role as Stallone didn't want to make fun with the Rocky character. Fun movie to watch.

I don't see many people even mentioning this movie but i remember that it was a big deal for Stallone when it came out. Very tense, story driven piece. The cast alone is amazing, Liotta (recently passed away, RIP), DeNiro, Harvey Keitel, Stallone is amazing here. Woman that plays young cop is Janeane Garofalo and i mostly remember her from Dogma (Kevin Smith's masterpiece i would recommend to watch if you already haven't).

Great cast, great urban noir. James Mangold has a penchant for westerns, somehting you can notice in this and also in Logan. The finale of Cop Land is a classic High Noon-reminiscent western shootout.

If you guys have never seen High Noon, you need to, not only because it is deservedly considered a classic Western, but because I consider Copland an heir successor to it, with Stallone as an unlikely Gary Cooper and Liotta as a VERY unlikely Grace Kelly.

I think I recommend this movie a few weeks ago. Great movie and reminds me a little of LA Confidential. A lot going on but everything ties in so well together. Showed this to my wife a few months ago and she loved it too. Great reaction once again. PS: my favorite Stallone movie is Assassins. Stallone vs Banderas, so epic. You 2 should definitely check it out.

You should check out “Narc.” Ray Liotta was absolutely fantastic. Also “Corinna, Corinna,” which was a light comedy drama in which Ray Liotta portrays a kinder and non-violent character. He has always stated “Corinna, Corinna” was a film he was truly proud of doing. His chemistry with Whoopi Goldberg was great too. As for “Cop land,” this was based on the upbringing of director James Mangold, who grew up in Washingtonville, NY (who had folks who worked in the city, including NYPD, FDNY, etc). It was pretty ballsy at the time for Disney to make this (through miramax). And yes, Stallone was oscar worthy.

"I can't hear you Ray!" One of my favorite lines of all time in a movie. Cuz you realize at that point, he ain't listening either. Boom! I love this movie. I loved Ray Liotta in this movie as well. And when he shows up and still has Freddy's back. Love it.

RIP Ray Liotta. And there’s a Scorsese connection here, 3 actors from Goodfellas. Also Rocky and the Raging Bull. 90s movie have so many great actors often put in the same movie, like Heat.

An often overlooked movie that reminded people that Sly could actually act and wasn't just an 80's action hero. A stellar cast and great direction and editing. For me it's a classic.
