🌍 About This Session
The world is on an unstoppable path towards a clean energy transition, but the latest report from the International Energy Agency (IEA) shows that the pace of change isn't fast enough - and greenhouse gas emissions still need to be urgently reduced.
🔥 Why COP28 Matters
As we approach COP28, the stakes have never been higher. In this discussion, we'll shed light on what's at stake and what needs to be done to secure a manageable future for humanity.
🎙 Featured Speaker
We're honoured to kick off the session with an address from Dr. Christophe McGlade, member of CCAG and Head of the Energy Supply Unit at the IEA.

The CCAG should coordinate with other organizations (universities, Institutes, non-profits, etc) to develop a proposed resolution at COP 28 to establish a committee to propose a resolution at COP 29 for a framework for United Nations Climate Governance Geoengineering Mitigation. Geoengineering proposals include: that can have global impacts and if stopped can cause a sudden increase in global warming: e g. The controversial spraying of aerosols into the stratosphere 2. Actions which can be confined to regional impacts and can impact the temperature differences between the poles and equator, with likely global wind and ocean current impacts driven by such differences, and which if stopped can cause sudden temperature increases, e.g. Marine Cloud Brightening in certain areas, like tropical regions. If done over the Arctic Ocean in summer to increase ice area and thickness, then if these actions were stopped, then these impacts would change slowly. 3. Actions based upon geomimicry, I e. Actions that mimic natural processes, and which if stopped would NOT cause sudden temperature changed, e.g - a. . spreading tiny white reflective silicon floating beads over Arctic Ocean ice in spring to help preserve and increase Arctic Ocean ice area and thickness. - b. Placing a floating bridge across the Bering Strait to reduce the flow of warm Pacific Ocean water from entering the Arctic and with floats of the same depth as previous pre-industrial ice flows blocking such inflows, and thereby mimicking the blocking action of such pre-industrial ice flows. 4. Actions based upon promoting biological activity in international Ocean waters and within the economic zones of countries, I e. - a Kelp farming: how such farms receive security and permits likely requires international governance actions -b. Increasing the population of baleen whales has been proposed to increase the fish supply and for carbon sequestration. How to establish protected areas (if any) and to finance, to research this proposal and to provide needed security (if any) requires international governance. 5. For Carbon Capture Usage and Storage- which benefits the whole world, how might such activities be supported, including financial support? A framework is needed for: - making decisions, - for financing research and deployment - for implementing research and deployment actions Would one framework be the existing United Nations Peace Keeping Force establishing a separate decision-making, funding, and deployment capability - with cooperation with United Nations University Climate and Environment faculties? 6. Would such framework establish a global system for accrediting activities as worthy for carbon capture usage and storage credits and determine how much should be the carbon capture credits for such activities.

Professor Simon Michaux has calculated that we don't have the minerals (copper etc...) for one 25 year generation of renewables. Either way, renewables and electrification are a massive ramping up of mining and industry.

】ever hear of recycling?

@@davidabbott9425 Read more carefully. Not enough for a single generation. I am willing to bet that solar panels and batteries won't be recycled. It's like unscrambling an egg. Maybe possible in a lab, but not economically viable.

Exactly. That's why it's really weird that animal agriculture still exists and is actually increasing like fossil fuel use too. Large body of humans just don't care or are stupid to care anything but their own asses and politicians who know are too scared to be honest and just concentrate to look like they care or maybe do some really meaningless.

@@davidabbott9425there are lots of things that are energy intensive to recycle. I'm willing to bet most metals are recyclable, but it's not the same story for plastics. Plastics are better to be burned off for fuel like coal. But I mean it's not bad. We might run out of virgin nonrenewable resources but population growth has been slowing- and could possibly start to decrease sooner than we realize. Keep in mind the population in 1950s was 2.5 billion. In 2011 it was 7 billion and 8 billion just last year. There's so many young folks that just got born. As they grow up, they're going to consume more resources. The fight against carbon emission is pretty dumb. Scientists should look at other alternatives such as inoculating aerosols into the atmosphere. Once the population starts to remain steady or decline, that's only when we should consider CO2 emissions

Yes, importantly the biggest crisis for the rich, when they understand they have broken wealth and economy concerns! They will lose everything.

US Republican members of Congress want to roll back and prevent energy measures which have been passed and those which have been proposed that would limit fossil fuels. Political will isn't strong enough on the climate change side. More needs to be done but, it will take time. The current generation in power, (both parties), wishes to remain in power rather turn over the reins of power to a younger generation. They will be forced to retire some year. The turn over will come. It is a slow matter. But, younger members will be elected.

The U.S. Speaker of the House is certainly younger than President Biden, but you don’t want the Speakers ilk setting climate policy. Upsetting.

The only thing absolutely guaranteed with COP 28, like every other COP, is disappointment. Time for a new strategy I think.
