I broke my foot and could not walk or drive for 2 months. I used my emergency fund to rent a one-level Airbnb with a ramp for one month (I live in a 226 sq ft yurt off-grid, so not a vehicle, but with a lot of the same types of challenges since I don't have a regular kitchen, bathroom, laundry, etc.) It was isolating and hard, but, unlike my yurt, the Airbnb was in a location where I could have groceries delivered and get an uber to drs appts. I was so glad I had that option because it allowed me to avoid taking the risks that living my usual lifestyle would have required. I was scared about how I was going to do my healing all on my own, but I made it through and I learned a lot.

Dear Bob, I’m from Portugal 🇵🇹 and I’m here to thank you and tell you how much you inspired me to change my life. I’m a solo 50 plus woman, driving is very stressful for me and I’m a bit of a hoarder (just a bit😏) so I didn’t become nomadic , it just wasn’t the life for me. But I changed my life when I moved from the city to the country. Now I live in a village, I’ve a back yard, grow some veggies 🥦, listen to the birds everyday… and I’m happier 😊 You inspired and encourage me to live my best life and for that I’m deeply grateful ❤. The two dogs living with me are very grateful too 😊 Thank you so much ❤❤❤

Good for you for using your brain and not listening blindly to your(pharma sales rep), doctor. I did the same with my broken back ten years ago. The body follows th mind.

So your AF went away? Wow! First time I've ever heard that happen, and I was a nursefor almost 30 years, included working in cardiology. If your AF was healed with diet, then YOU need to teach the doctors something! Also, your attitude of not accepting it probably had a lot to do with it, too (maybe, even more). I believe this from my own personal experiences.

I was near Kingston, but the life flighted to Prescott for the surgery and I had to depend on my network of friends to help. I was 57 at the time. 65 now. Same capabilities. There was some talk about a care facility, but I said nooooo. Some surgical teams wont accept if you dont have anyone to help you after surgery, but I lucked out. I was fine. I slept in my recliner.

Glad your procedure went well! My fear, as a single person in my 60s with pets, is how to ensure that, if anything unexpected were to happen to me, someone would know and my pets wouldn't be left to suffer. I wonder if there's a service I could subscribe to that would work sort of like a life alert system, but in reverse: instead of calling when an emergency arises, I'd check in once per day, and if I missed a check-in, someone would be notified and my location and vehicle description be given.

Important topic. Thank you! Before a procedure in Feb I had to repeatedly emphasis to the young man "My home is my truck. It will be in the parking lot." When he finally got it he got that 'sad' look. He started pitying me and I was too busy to try more than twice to explain that it is a choice." Harder still was dealing with the whole, have someone pick you up after and stay with you thing." I have 1 friend in Vegas. I hated to ask. Luckily she is an exceptionally good sport. The system is not designed for a lot of thinking (living) outside the box, but I got 'er done.

Glad things worked out well Bob. 1 1/2 year ago I was traveling cross county solo and I fell getting out of the van sliding door. I broke my left hip. Helpless lying in a parking lot good samaritans came to my aid as well as EMT, Fire rescue. Emergency surgery and full hip replacement in Kentucky. I had to explain to docs, nurses and case worker the situation that I couldn’t just go home and have someone take care of me. They kept me in the hospital 6 days and the. Arranged for in patient rehab for another 16 days. Then luckily had my Emergency travel insurance that flew me home (CA) with a nurse and had someone drive my van home for me. I was mobile enough to start taking care of myself although getting up the 13 steps in my house was tricky for awhile. Where there is a will there is a way!

GREAT information for everyone , no matter how one is living or where. Community is PRICELESS ! ❤ AND never be fearful of reaching out to those you know. Being independent is mostly a good thing; however when one needs help ......ask ! As Bob says ,friends will be upset if you dont ! If one is unable to help out ,they will help find who can !!

Thanks for posting this wonderful information. I would like to encourage doctors and therapists who are attracted to van life to set up fully mobile homes with clinics and treatment areas and join in creating spaces that would be mapped and known to van Life communities. I would also challenge van life builders to examine how they build to look at these issues. The emergency fund is a wonderful idea even for non Van life persons . Best wishes from the Caribbean

Wow. This episode was so much appreciated. It is a big fear, these medical "what if" events. But it's like life anywhere - you figure it out. And be a friend, have a friend, share your needs. Share your joys and challenges... community!

Our most prized possession is our health! We only realize how precious good health is when we have, or someone close has, a health problem. Thank you Bob for having this very serious discussion as we tend to put our head in the sand when the health issue arises! Also thank you Tim!

Glad you’re feeling better Bob. I’d like to add, I’m 68 as well. I’m in excellent health, minus a knee that’s starting to act up. I stay far away from drs. I don’t take medications. I know the lies tangled around cholesterol and quack seens. Knowing these things allows me to seek natural remedies without side effects. It’s not luck, my health. , it’s distrust of todays sick care. You too can learn to avoid drs. Stay well folks.

I respect your opinion on not trusting Doctors but a Doctor saved my husband's life. He was diagnosed with stage 3 Melanoma 2 years ago and would be dead today if he hadn't acted quickly and got him into surgery. So not all Doctors are bad

I'm with you. I'm 67 and I stay far away from doctors as well. I'm in good health and trying to stay that way without meds. One day I might have to seek "professional" care, but I want to avoid that scenario as long as possible. 😊

Today, doctors are prescribing more and more medications. (For kickbacks to their own wallets) and diagnosing more and more people with a mental illness. (To pad big pharma's pockets) In 1983 1 in 350 people were diagnosed with a mental illness. Today, 1 in 4. Pfizer has now developed a drug to counter all the mental drugs that people are taking. They call it tardive dyskinesia where your body parts move unaided on their own. It is a sad world we live in today. I too stay away from doctors. I am 59 and hopefully can make it to see retirement and enjoy time off from working. Other than that, I have lived a great life without chemicals, doctors opinions and giving my hard earned money to crooks.

Wow Bob I'm in a university hospital now because they think I have prostate cancer and lymph nodes etc. I had a biopsy done a few hours ago.. I had high hopes to retire and live the van life. I got so bad 2 women had to help me out of bed. I hope for the best to get to experience the van life. TC God bless y'all folks if you can work on the road do it don't wait until retirement because lately a lot of people seem to be dying right before retirement.

The best of luck to you Bob. This particular video might be your most important yet. So many of us who are either living in a van or about to, are in our 60's. Health issues can be of major concern. I for one, appreciate how you turn everyday life situations into a vanlife learning video. Thank you!

Bob, to your new friend and those finding themselves in a similar situation. Ask your doctor for your prescriptions in advance of your surgery, and let them know you have no way of getting them after the surgery. If they will not, some pharmacies will deliver. In addition,, always ask someone in the parking lot if they will help you. There are so many honest people that would love to help you! My husband looks for people in grocery parking lots for people that seem to need help. Especially elderly people. He is such a good Samaritan!!

Tim looked and sounded very calm about his medical times. And that's a smart way to go thru it. Bob, you got a good taste about this subject and thought about it rationally and got thru it better than if you weren't prepared at all. I'm sorry you two guys are having to deal with this but such is life. Glad you had the help you and Cody needed. Thanks for the update.
