Here's a hands-on test of the As Seen on TV product called Copper Crisper. I test french fries, pizza rolls, and grilled chicken strips. You may have seen advertising for a product called Gotham Steel Crisper Tray, which looks exactly the same as this product.
By the way, I know now that the music is too loud! This was one of my first videos and I've learned my lesson. If you complain now, just know you're very late to the party. Here is my public apology about the volume on this video: • My Funniest Negative C...

Thanks for this link where you washed them after some burnt stuff stuck to the pan. The older pan was hard to clean and confirms the Amazon reviews about the Copper Chef crisper - which some said was not non-stick and where others said to cover the pan in foil. I think I'll look for traditional non-stick stuff.

It has nothing to do with "copper" but that there is air space between the food and the underlying pan. Try using a cooling rack atop a regular cookie sheet and you'll get the same results.

I've got a convection microwave with two removable metal racks. A pair of these would work really well in that. I have some little Nordic Ware crisper trays; I typically put a larger tray on the turntable below them, and turn it off. I also put a water-soaked paper towel in that larger tray, to not only catch the grease, but humidify the oven so the food doesn't dry out. I think I'd put a couple of ounces of water in the tray under the basket. The main difference between the fries and pizza rolls vs. the grilled chicken strips was that the first two have some oil in them, obviously. I would think brushing a little EVOO, which is a healthy oil, on the chicken would do the trick. You probably do need to bump the time up a little since, as you noted, they're not against a hot metal baking sheet and are being cooked by heated air alone. In fact, this is probably true of all foods for that reason; I bet if you tried the fries again, and increased the time by 25 - 30%, they'd come out nice. Thanks for the review; it was informative and trustworthy. I think I will get one and play with it. BTW, the trick to pizza rolls not exploding is first, let them thaw to room temp and second, cook them longer at a lower temp. I think I did 375° for about 40 minutes on my crisper trays. Have fun.

Okay, I just bought one. My microwave is also a convection oven, But I had never used it before. I made Breaded chicken breast strips. I had to experiment with the time and temperature. I did not turn them over. they turned out the best ever. perfect crispness and moist and juicy. I am sold on it. To me the size is perfect because just 2 of us and it fits perfect in the Microwave convection oven

@ Dale Lauder, Wow, your comment is 3 yrs old and I didn't even know there was such a thing as a convection + microwave oven combo until now. Good to know about that option. True Convection ovens are really where you get well dispersed heat circulation around and through foods. The right pans and supplies play a significant role too. Restaurants have been using convection ovens for many, MANY yrs now, and by time comparison, they are only recently become available to home kitchen markets. Ive knew they were available ok options for regular, large kitchen ovens but not Microwave. I've never been that crazy about microwave cooking for many reasons. A convection microwave sounds like a huge step forward for microwave ovens. I do wonder about the browning aspects, but hopefully if needed there are some good comparison vids out there that can shed some light on that aspect B4 I make any huge investments. Thx for sharung your experience. I'll keep it in mind next time (and if,) I need to replace my microwave. Compared to standard, convection oven capabilities and performance are worlds apart. ✌️

Thanks for the video; I knew of the copper crisper but didn't know what it was for. I use a small sheet crisper that came with my toaster oven. I use it quite a lot but I never space out my food as much as you demonstrated. I just pile it on and then move it around to sort of evenly space it all as much as possible. If 2 or even 3 deep are touching I don't care...if I have to run the oven a few more minutes the heat penetrates all enough so everything is cooked and even if some are partly more crisp and some less evenly I like the contrast in the texture. Thanks for you video. Oh, thanks for NOT adding music. People usually add music in the background and it's way too loud and too distracting from the material being presented.

I have the same complaint with my copper crisper. I usually dust the strips with seasoned flour, give them a quick spritz of avocado or olive oil and then air fry. The timing for me is always an issue too. You really have to watch them, and I do flip them halfway. I put parchment paper on the tray underneath to try and keep it a bit cleaner.

I really liked your review of the copper crisper. i made frozen curly fries. i put a lot in the crisper and they were all touching but i followed the directions on the curly fry package which said spread them out in one layer. They turned out perfect. i prefer the copper crisper over baking sheets because i like the convenience of the basket. i was disappointed that they didn't include any recipes when on the box it said 50 free recipes included. on the box it also says oven safe up to 500 F, dishwasher safe and PTFE/PFOA/PFOS free. i think it will do a great job of breaded, fried chicken. i previously used a SS rack over a baking sheet to make crispy chicken and it was a poor fit. i like that the copper crisper is a perfect twosome, made to work together. i also make italian meatballs in my baking sheet with the ss rack which works well because it browns them all around and you don't have to turn them over but again, my ss rack and baking sheet are a poor fit. i am looking forward to making my meatballs in the copper crisper. so far i love it, but admittedly i have only used it twice, both times for curly fries. i look forward to using it a lot more. i am not opposed to adding oil or breading to get a good crisp when needed because i do that anyway even with my baking sheet. thanks again for your wonderful review.

We use the Copper Crisper in our Toaster oven for French Fries and other pre-made foods like the Pizza Rolls and it works great. We had to experiment a little but figured it out. Usually you have to go 25 deg. hotter then what the package calls for and 5 min. longer but that may be just because we are cooking in a Toaster oven. We use a pizza peel to make it easier remove it from the oven. It works great for us and we are purchasing another.

My biggest question with this is how difficult is it to clean? I don't clean pots and pans like I used to, because of seasoning them, and I figure the high heat will probably kill any bacteria there might be. On the other hand, some dishes make a food residue mess that I feel obligated to clean, and I wonder how much work it is to clean baskets like this.

Wash and dry chicken. Season and then in a baggie, add 1 tblspn per 10 wing pieces, without the tip and then cook. Cook on 250 for about 8 to 10 minutes and then hike the oven to 425-430 and cook an additional 30 minutes or so. After chicken is browned, immediately add a little more seasoning while hot. Let me tell you, I will NEVER fry chicken again! OMG, some kind of good. It must be the baking powder or something but whowee, talking about good chicken! If you didn't cook it yourself, you would swear it was fried.

Could you do a demo using sliced yellow or zucchini squash topped with a slice of Roma tomato and/or grilled asparagus w/shredded cheese? In addition, might I ask a question...who cooks 20 french fries? Also, the Gothham Steel Crisper states that you can use the tray only for items that you want to brown like chicken breast strips or fish filets...also can double as a cookie sheet for baking biscuits, crackers, and of course cookies. Check out a few more items as I just got mine and it's summer in New Orleans and ovens are not used too often with the heat & humidity occurring naturally around here...we tend to use MicroWaves and Toaster Ovens along with outside grills during the summer down here. Thanks. BTW, I know most of both copper pushing companies is hype.

We tried chicken wings. at 400 deg the pan warped. The water in the pan to prevent grease smoking ran to one end. The bbq sauce that dripped onto the pan welded itself to the pan and would not come off with soaking or a sponge. Eventually I used a nylon pad to remove it but suprise it took off the incredibly thin coating of whatever is on the pan. a failure.:(

Hello! Ok I saw your review and have to share mine now. LOL. It is a great crisper, that is, on things that are typically fried. If you want to compare a look and flavor likeness to fried foods, then don't mix the foods and expect a near comparison that will stand to accurately support the product it is being tested on. On that note, I am a huge baked fries fan, baked onion rings fan, etc. I happen to have a natural aversion to fat and thus fried foods, and being a clean, holistically-minded eater, I bought the rack to create crusty, yummy foods sans graisse, (non fat-fried). It works, but keep in mind that if you intend to brown meat, you'll have to obey the laws of physics, as proteins embedded in liquid forms (meat) must brown while touching a solid conducting surface of heat, not a spacious hole-ridden rack. Either that or place it as we have for thousands of years over flat, consistent heat such as flames. This is why the metal pan drilled with only a few holes browned the chicken and not the copper rack. You also had no crusty ingredients added to the pieces of chicken meat, and that also is unfair in saying that it cannot brown chicken. Normally, if you want to brown chicken by frying, you would make an oily crust to it, but this was not the case in this demonstration so one cannot expect a fried look or crunchy texture. The fries would brown more, and also have no issues crisping on the copper rack, because the outer part of the food on the rack contained a fatty source like oil, butter, or other fat source. So for the chicken, or vegetables, either add a crust-producing fat or bread it and try again, or fry it as usual. Be fair.

Does anyone know how long to cook a bag of fries with the Copper Crisper?

I ordered it and then checked for reviews - wrong order. I do like your experimentation methods. Keep in mind that different brands of frozen fries/foods give different results. Too bad about the bad instructions; they could really go to town with suggestions so people would use it more often and not quit after the first fail, but they are right about reading individual product instructions. The foods will be a bit better with this tray that allows more air circulation around the food. If you put fries in a pile like shown on the box, they will be less crispy so I dump them in the tray and run fingers/spatula over pile to spread flat to one layer. Your fries 'sound' really rock hard, so maybe put fries closer together if they are that thin. I am not fond of those skinny fries as they just get too hard too quickly, so regular size or even the thick fries work well along with some frozen herb breaded real fish (not the pressed cheap fish or phony chicken strips that are sold). I start out with the frozen fish that takes 20 minutes and add fries about 6 minutes later. I use my Breville convection oven with super fan airfry mode and the end result is browned and food is perfect. The Breville oven already comes with a similar airfry/dehydrating tray like this, but I wanted a spare and if I don't like this crisper, I can store fruit on the counter in it!

If you want to brown meat, for texture, you can cook it on high for a couple of minutes in a skillet, then put it in the oven.

I would wonder whether washing by hand rather than machine washing makes a difference with the flaking. Or whether high heat is a factor. (No offense intended toward anyone.)

One of the best review guys around. But I got to ask man lol...what instructions does it need other than grab with two hands and hand wash with soapy water? I mean that is a bit like looking at a pot and lid and wondering where the instructions are right? I do not think the instructions are terrible, just not really needed.

I cooked at 10 degrees higher than suggested for oven temp and i also added 5 mins more to cooking times. Worked for me. I also cooked frozen fish filets along with french fries and it was perfect even cooking. Potatoes get cooked inside perfectly. Not as crisp on outside as fried in oil but so much healthier.

Haven't tried bacon in crisper tray because I do those in my microwave. I have a ceramic ridged plate that rests in a glass pan and then a piece of paper towel goes over it all to prevent splatters. I have also done it in a glass rectangular (pyrex) baking pan with 2 layers of paper towel below and one layer on top. It is around 1 minute per piece of bacon to get really crispy stiff but didn't like using so much paper towel. The pyrex type rectangular tray is made for microwave use and if some people like bacon less crispy, then check oven earlier,

If you do test bacon, let me know how it turned out! I'm going to be doing a follow-up soon, and maybe I'll try that. By the way, there is an XL version of Copper Crisper that is sold only at Sam's Club. I haven't seen that one yet, however.

I have Gotham Steel pans, already, and absolutely LOVE them. The surface is awesome and I don't find anything sticks to them. How was washing off the pizza stuff on the basket? I'm picturing cheese sticks that melt all over the basket and are horrendous to clean up. Although, they are all dishwasher safe, right?

I have to turn it way up every time you talk, then you stop and it goes into the background music and I have to turn it way down or it blasts my ear drums every time. Other than that great review video!

I'm still experimenting with fried chicken. Technically, you're supposed to be able to follow any oven fried chicken recipe, but simply don't need to flip halfway through. I've found that food usually needs to cook a little longer, perhaps because it's not in direct contact with a heated surface.
