Well I been tying files for going on 50 years now and I have sinned a lot at the vise. This is some of the very best fly tying video on You Tube. I have been going away from 5 min epoxy in recent years - I like the Loon Fly finish and just zap it with a light. But epoxy is fine, just tie a dozen or two then epoxy at once. Great pocket water nymph, been using one as my heavy in Czech Nymphing- I get as many hook up with it as I do with the other two.

Some substitutes for the flashabou that I have experimented with and found usable are just like one small strand folded over to make 4 small strands. Also if you want to cut the inside of an airhead wrapped or something similar that works very well. Great video though I'm only tying this version from now on. So effective

This is the first fly I ever tied. I picked a really hard one for a beginner! Also tried the prince nymph. Went into fly fish food and said " I want to start tying flies, but I am sure i need to start with something simple like copper john or prince nymph" Lance Egan was kind enough to also suggest I start with some black beauties and san jaun worms Hahah!

What I found works well is using 70 denier for the body and then when I need to tie the wingcase, going to veevus 16/0 so it doesn't build up bulk (especially on sizes 16-18)

Fabulous video! Question from a newbie - since we cover the thorax with epoxy or resin anyway, what’s the point of the Thin Skin? I don’t have any so I tied them with just flashabou and covered with Loon thick to make a bulbous thorax. They look great and the flashabou shines through. I think you could save a step…

Hi. You have once given me an advice, I'll try to pay you back with mine. You might want to cover the copper wire with some kind of varnish/epoxy/UV resin. The reason for this is as soon as you start using this fly in the water, the copper will become discoloured due oxidation. Even if it doesn't get wet, it will eventually oxidize. UV resin works best for me, I simply don't like epoxy due to bubbles and less control over its curing.
@tightlinevideo
@tightlinevideo 9 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the tip on the wire, you are absolutely right. The Ultrawire from Wapsi like I'm using in video however already has some kind of coating on it which makes less likely to oxidize which is why I like it. On the other hand, I like you started using UV resin on nearly all wire body flies and really like the look of it as it sort of magnifies the wraps. Anyway, thanks, great tip for all viewers keep them coming.

if you use epoxy and want to get rid of air bubbles, just run a lighter briefly over the fly, or if you mix the epoxy on some aluminum foil, run a lighter under it and the bubbles will disappear fairly quickly
