This yard next to three I maintain (2 full service weeklies plus one edging weekly) was neglected due to being for sale. I use it as an opportunity to test out some of the residential HART 40 volt lawn care equipment. When it turns out I made a huge error in judgment, I become very thankful that I brought the BOB-CAT QuickCat 36" (bit.ly/BCBrad)!

The home behind me was vacant for a year and I got tired of seeing the grass look like a redwood forest. I then took it upon myself to mow it but did not know that some latinos had purchased the home just not yet moved in. They came in and caught me mowing it one day and ran over asked me what the heck I was doing and I explained to them I was helping them out. They then painted my home for free and started bringing me home cooked meals LOL. The owner came over and said his painter crew was joking about how its the gringo that was mowing the hispanics lawn but we have become very good family friends LOL

I did this to a house on my street that had an issue with the new owners being delayed in moving in (I learned that later as I told him I mowed his yard when I met him). I actually LOVED doing it because: A) his yard isn't that big. And B) I wanted to test the power of my new electric mower on THICK 9" tall grass!!! I was amazed how well my Greenworks mower did.....and it was funny to see the NEXT day a service come to "mow the grass" that was concrete level. LOL (We assumed the HOA president, a retired yard nut, called someone to complain, and possible fine them for having long grass) I watched the guy "mow the yard" shaking his head almost the whole time. You could tell he was saying "why am I here" to himself the whole time. Gotta give it to him....he went over the whole yard.

I had a neighbor that lived across the street from me a couple of years ago at a house I was renting with my family when we were between selling a house and buying a new one. I noticed that he was going through a pretty tough time with what appeared to be a divorce or separation and listing the house for sale. He would come home just about everyday with a case of beer and head inside for the night. I think he was kind of depressed or just didn't care anymore because he had let his yard go. The neighborhood had an HOA too, so they were pretty hard on people not keeping up with their yards. I would go home at lunch and mow the yard over a couple days and his yard was so small I would just knock it our for him.

As a teen I worked as a pool cleaner for a company. I drove from house to house and had about 8 pools to clean per day. One day I complete all my jobs and head home. Later that day I get a call from my boss about a complaint that I didn’t show up, I assured him I did. Turns out I cleaned the wrong houses pool. I’ve always wondered what they thought happened to their pool and how all the acorns and algae disappeared...

I worked in lawn care and aerated lawns one time i aerated an entire front and back yard while there was 2 contractors working on a patio and the owner of the house showed up about mid way. Nobody said anything to me so i kept working. At the end of the job when i walked up to the front door to give the guy his receipt, i looked at the adress on the house and the adress on the reciept and realized i had just aerated the entire property of the client's neighbor. What kills me is the guy came home to some random kid aerating his lawns and left

Y YIII, I’ve cut my grass tall before and it always ends up yellowing/ browning and burning out and feels like you’re stepping on tree branches because tall grass has bigger stalks.. This year I’ve mowed low all year and the lawn is still green and thicker than it’s ever been. I’ll keep mowing low and you keep poking your feet with grass bud! Oh also it’s a proven fact that when you consistently cut short your grass develops a stronger root system than mowing high. Mowing low also helps keeps the weeds out.

I own a large paint company and once sent a crew with a competent lead person to a home to start the prep work one morning. Well around 11 o'clock the homeowner called and said no one showed up to work on their home. Of course I panicked and called my guys to find out they were two streets over prepping the wrong house. By the time I arrived they had pressure washed the entire house and had the front of the house including a huge front porch railing caulked along with some other stuff. Long story short. I gave those folks a free paint job on their house. For Christmas that year though those same folks mailed me a 1000. dollar check to help cover the expenses I laid out for a 4000. paint job on their home. Felt truly blessed to have them do that out of their hearts.

There's a "growing" movement of people who garden for nature. During Lockdown I dug a large wildlife pond. I started letting the grass grow long around it to offer shelter for frogs and newts but the other wildlife it attracted encouraged me to 'rewild' the whole lawn; now meadow! Gazing over tall swaying grasses and wildflowers dancing with damselflies, butterflies and bees is so much more rewarding than the lifeless monoculture that is a pristinely manicured lawn. During the recent drought mine was the sole patch of green. If some stranger turned up and started to mow my meadow they'd swiftly be introduced to the hounds!

It's so sad how, in our society, someone has to be scared to do such a selfless and generous act of kindness such as yours (victimless as you called it) because it would be considered 'trespassing' to mow a lawn for a house that is on sale. We shouldn't have to be so afraid to want to help eachother out and or any living being on this planet! You should be able to mow that lawn for the hour (however long) it took you to mow it without being in fear that you may get noticed and get in trouble. I personally thank you, that was very sweet and selfless of you!♡

Well, the only problem is that in certain situations it isn't victimless. I would hope that in this case there weren't any downsides for the homeowner, and there probably weren't, but there is still a chance. The best way to go about something like this is to ask the person you're trying to help. An analogy: Unless you ask, you could be trying to help a toad by putting it in the water.

It's okay guys, it is just grass and it will grow back incredibly fast. No one is going to get hurt by his lawn mowing actions. Some of your comments is exactly what I was saying people are afraid of when they shouldn't be, from the repercussions of societies norms, to think something as non-damaging and helpful as this has some kind of (or is 'supposed to' have some kind of) of negative reaction. I mean come on people! Thank you for proving my point to anyone who disagreed with my saying what he did was selfless and victimless. Relax, chill out. There are much more important things to worry about and or comment on than cutting four inches off of resilient and quick-growing grass in front of a house of which is uninhabited. He makes many videos all of the time that all seem to be quite successful, so this video wouldn't have been missed if he decided not to help out and mow the lawn. Other than maybe soothing his "OCD" (so to say) by finally cutting one of these overgrown lawns, his actions were completely selfless, I believe. -Anyways, have a wonderful day🙏🏼.

Then I see a guy I’ve never seen before (small town here) ride past the front on a mower, and he wasn’t a neighbor so who was mowing? I go look out back AND THE REST OF MY LAWN WAS CUT! The lawn itself wasn't very big but it took me twice as long because the mower kept bogging down from the thick, lush, green, wet Alaskan grass. It started off as me just trying to do something nice for the house and put down a couple in the process but man did turn into a job i'd pay someone else to deal with. Literally every push forward it would bog down, every other push the engine would die, and about every couple of yards i'd hit a nest of mosquitoes and get eaten alive. To make matters worse it had a bag on it but it wouldn't fill. I checked everything, and she just kept flinging cut grass all over the sidewalk and driveway.

Yes, it takes slightly longer but your mow will be cleaner, keeps the blade speed up for a cleaner grass blade cut, grass will be healthier.

@[Redacted] Semi true. The HP and torque of electric motors is quickly starting to outperform gas motors. So this issue isn't really a problem. Second, I learned the "half of a pass" technique while mowing with my gas mower. The point of the technique is to save your grass. Faster blade speed = cleaner cuts. Clean cuts damage the grass less and doesn't leave clumps of grass behind.

[Redacted] With that much grass, the deck of a mulching mower will be filled so quickly that the mower doesn’t have a chance to chop the clippings and drop them back to the lawn. Better case scenario, it is hard to push the mower forward for have a huge clump under; worst case scenario, the gas motor stalls, or the electric motor overheats

its sad that we have to become worried about laws or just police in general before doing something kind hearted.

It is very worrying the direction some laws are taking, honestly. Laws that are technically made for the bad guys end up being applied in situations like this on a daily basis just to get some quick bucks to run the police departments and increase the stats.

Not a professional just a homeowner the other day I ended up mowing three large homes, but I always ask never know when someone has just had their yard sprayed or seeded as some other people have mentioned I also don't want to hurt anyone's feelings so I always ask now when my neighbors can't mow due to illness or money I call them and ask would they like me to do it sometimes they stop by and ask if I can I do it for them. the same with my snowblower. Lately my new neighbors have been from Bosnia and turkey and they have been very grateful when I could help them out I get free vegetables and pastries they know I'm watching out for them and their kids and I get invited to BBQs Etc. It's really cool because I get to learn about their cultures and they know that they have been welcomed to The neighborhood I never charged but if they want to give me some gas I don't turn them down cuz I know it makes them feel better. I always make sure if one of my neighbors goes on vacation that their lawn is taken care of the day before they come back that way they can come home and relax. I guess maybe I should turn it into a business but I like not being required to do the yards. Our only kids are our German Shepherds but now we are being adopted by multiple youngsters. it is wonderful to see the neighborhood turn young again and it will be nice to know as I get too old to do this that may be one of those youngsters will help us out. I can testify that it's a great way to meet your neighbors. Best wishes Simon.

simon kenton * Thank you, sir. 😊 Pretty sure wherever you live it is also great! I 💜 my city too much to leave it... the city earns $1 billion a year off of tourism alone (pre-virus) so we’ve not had any real estate tax increase in a decade, we have awesome schools, suburban feel... tourists stay there by the beach and don’t bother us. It’s a win-win. 😉 Have a great week.
