Let's dive into another part of Egyptian culture that may be not so well known, but nonetheless just as fascinating and mysterious as so many other parts of life here in Egypt.

I like when I see a Muslim Egyptian brother or sister talk like this and have this mentality love. It gives me a fresh breath of air through all the tension and corrupted minds. Always praying to God to be more loving, respectful and peaceful citizens towards each other and be proud equally of our rich history and beloved country because we all came from the same greatest civilization in the world.

Thank you so much! I have been intending to make this video for a long time, but I wanted to make sure it was a well thought out video, with accurate information, and representing Coptic Christians to the best of my ability, in a short video. There's a lot more that can be said about the topic, of course, but I think this is a good "intro" into the topic, and perhaps I can make more in the future. I learned a lot myself while making this video, it certainly has a very long and deep history! ❤❤🙏🙏

Great video! Copts are a very important link. Although every new religion, that Egyptians were accepting, was bringing, also, a new cultural identity, in case of Christianity it enabled preservation of the old one. They use modified Greek alphabet with adition of letters for phonems that do not exist in the Greek language. That alphabet enabled disciphering earlier stages of Egyptian language and symbols that were used as you mentioned in the video. I would say that they are a bit more liberal part of Egyptian society. Nowdays they have equal rights although some old “relics” still exist like number of Copts in the military compared to the total population. I don’t know is that true but I have found an information that the Coptic language is preserved in spoken form in couple of vilages close to Luxor. Copts definetely deserve more of your videos.
@Gventures

Thank you so much! And yes, I have also heard that the Coptic language may still be spoken in some small villages near Luxor as well! Though I could not independently verify that and therefore excluded that from the video, I would love it if it were so. Thanks so much for watching and your insights! 😊🙏

Awesome! I'm looking forward to seeing them 😊 You should plan a ride to the Monastery of Saint Anthony the great; if you like highways and mountains you'd like that ride... But not in July like I did, if the hot weather scares you much 😅 You'd also stretch more to the Monastery of St. Paul after it, but I returned in same day so didn't have much time
@Gventures
@Gventures Ай бұрын
@@fadyromany8345 Yes, since discovering the existence of this monastery, I now do plan to make a road trip to the monastery! I think I would make a several day trip of it though, so I could enjoy and explore a bit. Then I would also have time to visit the Monastery of St. Paul 😁 I have so many trips I want to make, it's just about finding the time to make them all. And you are right, I do not want to drive in the summer heat! 😂 But I want to make a trip to the Nile Delta and visit places like Zagazig, Tanis and Damietta. Another trip northwest to Marsa Matruh, passing through Al Alamein and other coastal cities. If I could take enough time off, I would even like to make it to Siwa (I've been there before, but I took a bus that time). This fall I would really like to drive to Jordan, but there are a lot of logistical issues with that trip, like passing through the Sinai Peninsula (I need a special permit to do that). I think I can probably only take one trip a year for these longer journeys, but there are many I would like to make. So much to explore! ❤

That also means more virtual adventures for us through your channel 😉 Regarding the trip to Red Sea monasteries, if you not planning to continue to Gouna or Hurghada, I suggest checking St. Paul's hotel maps.app.goo.gl/53wNTPpRZeah35AK6 I'm not sure if it's open for solo travelers, though. Regarding the trip to Jordan, all motorcycles have to get permission to pass, but it's doable within riding groups; I currently recall Omar Al Fardi, you may reach him, he's very helpful and went through it before, I assume www.youtube.com/@omarmansourtrips Can't agree more! There is so much to explore, and maybe I'll reconsider my riding boundaries/ restrictions and just explore 😁 Good luck with your trips!

When I travel around the world I always being surprised that people don’t know that rich history in Egypt especially Christianity in Egypt. I am proud that I am direct related to Pharos. Also even if our percent is like 10% of the population which I highly doubt it because our government is corrupted for many years. We will still fill countries with our numbers 10% it is like 15 million Christians in Egypt. Also some of our Coptic words still survived in the daily life in current Egyptian Arabic dialect. As a devout Evangelical Lutheran Christian from Germany, deeply influenced by high church traditions, I am particularly moved by the Oriental Orthodox Christianity. The bravery and dedication of Coptic Christians to wear their faith on their sleeves, quite literally, with a tattooed cross on their wrist in Egypt, is nothing short of admirable. On my left wrist, I bear the tattoo of the Christian fish (Ichthys symbol), right over my pulse artery, a beautiful testament that Jesus Christ is my Lord and Savior, the very center of my existence. On the inside of my right ankle, an anchor tattoo, designed as a Christian cross with a heart, signifies the virtues of faith, love, and hope. These tattoos are a powerful declaration of my faith, indelible and ever-present, accompanying me for life. Should I ever find myself in Jerusalem, I am drawn to the idea of getting a cross tattoo on my right wrist, perhaps a Jerusalem Cross or a Coptic Cross. Yet, I hesitate, pondering whether it would be fitting or respectful for me, a non-Copt, to bear the Coptic cross. I would appreciate your insights on this matter.

This is such a challenging subject, Gisselle, and I am fascinated by your insight into the religious side of Egypt's culture. The comments by your viewers reflect very favourably on your knowledge and clear explanation of the Coptic Church in Egypt, so congratulations for conveying this so well. Your friend Alex also helped to clarify many aspects of the Church in a proud and meaningful way, so thanks to you both for raising my understanding of this important part of Egypt's way of life. 😀William

Thank you William! This was a very difficult video to make, not only due to it's sensitive nature and it's very long history, but because I wanted to represent, as accurately as possible, so many aspects about Coptic Christians here. Although I am no historian, I extensively researched, pouring over various articles, watching videos, asking Egyptians here questions about this topic, and hope I did it justice. I appreciate your recognition of my efforts. And yes, Alex is fantastic, I'm so happy he was willing to be interviewed and share his knowledge and experience with me, he is very proud and passionate about his faith and the Coptic Churches history, and it shows. I am very grateful for his help. Thank you so much again William ❤🙏

Because I know very few people can speak it now, especially conversationally. Can you speak it conversationally? Who do you speak it with?! I learnt coptic because it's our original language and of course because it's the language of the great pharaohs. You can see videos of me speaking in coptic and there is one video talking about the original pronunciation or the old pronunciation of coptic which still conserved in the Zeniya village. And I'm not the only one who can speak coptic there is one family reviving the late pronunciation of coptic in Akhmim (Suhaj governate) and other family has revived already the modified Greco-Bohairic coptic (the Modern pronunciation of coptic now in church) I know I'm running over many terms that might be unclear but sorry here is not the best place to explain :D

How interesting! I had no idea security guards checked ID or needed proof of religion. I suppose it must depend on the specific church and the specific time/occasion. I've attended events at churches, been at a church where a friend was helping design and teach choreography for an event, and attended multiple weddings and funerals, as well as visiting historical churches, and was never asked for ID. At times I was even wearing a hijab, so it was clear I was Muslim. Awesome video as always. I love that you interviewed a friend to give us an everyman perspective, not an expert.

Yeah, perhaps it does depend on the church. All I know is, there are security personnel outside any church I have entered here in Egypt, and they did check my ID. But it could vary. I have attended Christian weddings where of course their Muslim friends attended, and to my knowledge they weren't checking ID's, just asking "Here for the wedding?" and then allowed to pass. I didn't intend to imply Muslims are not allowed into churches, but just on a regular, normal day, I have seen them check ID's. It's a murky area that I don't know everything about, but it's something I have encountered here that I have not encountered in other countries. Thanks so much for watching and your input! ❤

Hmm, definitely informative. :) Not twenty minutes from my house here in Houston, TX, there's a Coptic Church. That said, if you ever want to dig a little deeper on the academic side of it, I'd recommend talking to Dr. Tamara Siuda, as they're a Coptologist and Egyptologist that I follow. That said, I wonder if anyone still holds the old beliefs of the pharaohs there, even in just a superstition or clandestine. Probably isn't safe for them if they are fully that, though. One day I will visit Egypt with my temple. Just gotta save up.

Going to Giza and Cairo for just 3 days next week, could you recommend a private driver, please? I found the prices of entrances to museums and monuments quite cheap, the uber or taxi also cheap, but when I look for tour guides and group tours, then, or they do not go to all the places I would prefer, going to others that I do not want, and also the costs are really really expensive if compared with the costs when doing by ourselves. So I would prefer to pay an amount of money to a driver. And in some monuments, if there will be a guide, next to the entrance I would pay it separately too. I found the trips with groups and guides too much time doing things I maybe not be that much interested to do specially because I only have 3 days to do it so I needed to tell "look, I would like to visit this, and this and this", to adjust the "tour" to my interests. Thanks for any help.
@Gventures
@Gventures Ай бұрын
I wish I could help, but I have actually never hired a private driver, so I have no contacts. Since I bought my motorcycle here, I always drive that around, and before I bought my motorcycle, I always took Uber motorcycle to get around, or took public transportation, like the train. Tour agencies and guides are always expensive, but if you want a tour guide, I would suggest paying for one through an actual company, and not the people lingering outside museums and ancient sites. I did that once, and the tour guide was not good at all. Possibly hard to understand the accent or not the best English, most of the things she said I had already read on Wikipedia, she added no new knowledge, and I think she was just making some stuff up on the spot. She claimed she had a masters in Hieroglyphics, which I highly doubt, why would she be sitting outside waiting for people coming in if she had that level of education, she could just go get a job with a company and get paid much more. She also kept referencing Christianity and the Virgin Mary at ancient Egyptians sites (somehow trying to connect the two?), it was just all very weird. But you are correct, if you want to create your own tour, it is much more expensive. If I were you, I would just take Uber where you want to go. But if you absolutely require a private driver, then I wish you luck in your search! And sorry I couldn't help you there. All the best 🙏

@@Gventures No say sorry I know you are always on bike and I say thank you for your videos. Exactly for them, I see it is possible to do it by ourselves but the "scammers" made me the wish to or to find someone to indicate me a known private driver or to go to the tours. As I said, the problem about tours, is that they have their places specified and sometimes when I find something close to what I want, then other place is missing (for example I wanted to find a tour that would include Isis temple, Kom Ombo temple and Horus temple but or I only find with Isis and Horus without Kom Ombo or the last 2 without Isis). Even if I just stayed 1 hour inside them just to have a "glance" so I must find a driver to hire. Maybe I will try to find an Uber for example and ask him if he would drive me all day in Cairo, and then when in Luxor, to find a taxi driver. Abu Simbel I will go with an organized tour. I found it too far and complicated to go by myself. Thanks a lot. If you wish to be my guide in Cairo, we can use Uber hehe. Or just to take a coffee. Anyway thanks for your videos, you are very natural, friendly, easygoing, so, definitely an unsnobbish person!!! Was great to find your channel and to follow it.

@@Edik_San Actually yes that's a very good idea, make a deal with an Uber driver, many of them will offer you their number so you can call them later, so if speak to them about paying them for the day a good price and tell them where you want to go, I am sure you will be able to find someone willing to do that (as long as their English is good enough to communicate what you want). Limited bathrooms, not the cleanest place on earth, and the social environment can be a bit lacking. I met quite a few people that were staying there long term while studying Arabic, so it was almost treated as more of a home for them than anything else. In my previous comment it was mentioned that Copts are a link to understand ancient Egypt and their language. However, they are also a link to understand some Muslim practices. Since early days it was important for early Muslims to be close to Christians. The first mosque in Egypt was built in Fustat just outside of the area called Coptic Cairo. Minbars, mihrabs, minarets and other things originate from Coptic and Oriental Orthodox Christianity traditions. A fun fact is that Copts have their music notations for their hymns and chants. Unlike other Orthodox Christians they use music instruments but just rhytm instrumets like triangles and cymbals. Their liturgical practices are influenced by the Greek language and some of their hymns are completely in Greek. Recently Copts celebrated Easter. (May 5th). They use a Greek greeting (C)Hristos anesti! and respond with Alithos anesti! (Christ is risen! Indeed he is risen!) . That greeting is used long time after Easter among Orthodox Christians. BTW, to all Copts I wish: Ⲭ̀ⲣⲓⲥⲧⲟⲥ Ⲁ̀ⲛⲉⲥⲧⲏ !

I just want non Egyptians to know that Copts means all Egyptians not just Christians. When Arabs came to Egypt, some Copts converted to Islam and some stayed Christians. The relationship between muslims and Christians in Egypt is very special. They are the same DNA, language, and culture. The extremist views came from Saudi Arabia ( Wahhabism) recently not when Arabs came to Egypt. Actually one of Islam basics is to be nice to Coptic people. When Arab Muslims came to Egypt. They were 4000 while Egyptians were 1 million. No way they can kill 1 million. So saying that they converted because they were afraid of killing doesn’t make sense. I really like your videos❤️

Great video, but regarding the topic of tattoos, please correct your information about this. It is that the beginning of tattooing was the persecution of Christians, not Muslims, by the Romans, where the sign of the cross was drawn, or what is known as “stamping the cross.” It is an inherited custom that Christians have known since the era of Roman martyrdom, which witnessed massacres against them to force them to leave Christianity and return to paganism, and the Christian fathers were afraid of death. They left their children after them to be raised by pagans, so they would hammer the cross for their children to ensure that they remained Christians. When the Islamic conquest came to Egypt, it was a reason for the Egyptian Christians being saved from the persecution and killing of the Romans, and the clergy received them warmly. They lived side by side with respect and love and were not persecuted. As for the tribute, it was paid in exchange for their protection, since they were not joining the army. Thanks

As I stated in the video, the origins are somewhat obscure, but during my research, nowhere did I find any mention of what you are talking about. I checked many different resources and read many articles written by many different people around the world, as well as many Coptic Christians here in Egypt. They all claim it began under Muslim rule. Also, as you saw in the video, I spoke to a Coptic Christian. Even he did not attribute the history of the tattoo to the Romans, but to the time of Muslim rule (1,000 years ago? Muslims were ruling during that time). I do know Muslims put a stop to the persecution the Christians were receiving by the Romans, but it does not mean persecution completely stopped for Christians just because they were no longer being murdered by the Romans. Please listen to the video again and you will hear that I say "Christians were able to live in relative peace under Muslim rule," but again, Christians still did face persecution during that time. And the tax was not in exchange for military exemption, although that was a part of the deal. The tax was also much higher than the Muslim zakat, and God only knows what would happen if one couldn't pay. These events might be a darker part of history and not reflect pleasantly on Muslims in that era, but it is in fact a part of history one must acknowledge and move on from, not ignore and bury as if it never happened. The same goes for Christian history in many parts of the world (the crusades, anyone?), even recent US history, there are pleasant and unpleasant parts. I know things today are not this way, but I'm sorry, it did happen in the past.

@@Gventures when I was in Cairo recently I was asked by some kids what religion I was and when I said I wasn’t Muslim or Christian they asked if I was Jewish and then seemed confused when I said no religion.

@@tastytechaddictsmtb I was going to tell you that actually 🤣If you tell someone you have no religion, they aren't going to get it. And that is not just the kids, but the adults too. I've seen it many times before here. It doesn't register that you might not be religious

@@tastytechaddictsmtb 😄Yep. Not a part of the culture here, everyone is religious, or even if they aren't, they usually aren't going around telling people that.
