For years at lot of my students tell me about a kid or their kids who have a great swing. So if everyone keeps marveling at them, why don't we just copy kids to learn the swing?
There is a huge difference learning as a kid versus learning as an adult. This difference is strength. Adults have it where as kids don't.
So maybe we can copy kids to learn the golf swing with a feeling of not trying to hit the ball with the arms. This would be a totally different way to do it and different feelings but if we keep marveling at kids why not copy them?
Watch this tip then use your imagination. Imagine you have the strength level of a little kid and hit at least a bucket of balls. If so, you will see there is a different way to learn the golf swing that will get you hitting longer and straighter than ever.

Sorry for the long post here but I wanted you to know what you’ve done for me. I’m in my mid 60s and I play with fellas who are 20 yrs younger. I used to play from the senior tees and still be 20 to 30 yards short of their drives. I maxed out at 200 yds. I now play on the same tees as they do and hit it as far, if not farther, than they do, anywhere from 230 to the occasional 260 yds. And everyone I play with compliments me on my tempo and tell me it looks like I am not even swinging hard. Thank you so much!

I didn’t learn to golf til in my 40’s. I’ve never been an athletic person. My daughter could outdrive me without playing very often in middle school, and joined the high school team. Thinking about how a kid would load their legs to get the club moving really clicked for me. The slow mo vid of your teenager really put all the elements you teach together! I’ve been watching your videos everyday and am working on my hing and hips. It’s still coming together, but I think this is really going to work for me. Thank you!

So glad you found me and watched this tip. If kids are doing this the average golfer needs to do it too. Different power source as opposed to just hitting. Get this the power comes. Now keep in mind a kid with no body mass is going to drive the lower too hard. Into the future I will be back her off a little but at that point she should be hitting it 300 (fingers crossed). Keep at it. Do lots of daily practice swings at home. Might want to watch this one too: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/r8dmlMZep9uymJ8.html

You are correct about the strength thing. I was 53 when I started golf. I have been a firefighter for 25 years. Strength is a necessity for firefighting! I have also worked building houses and as a mechanic. My whole life - I've needed strength. Now, trying to learn golf - strength is not the best thing to use. Thank you for the great content and information in your videos.

Yes, arm strength is a huge problem. If it wasn't then no kid could out drive adults. This is not the case though as you see this girl literally hit it longer than 99% of all students that come to me for lessons. Another thing you need to overcome is human nature telling you to hit the object (ball) sitting in front of you and hit it hard. So there are 2 things you need to overcome which is why some people find it hard to stop hitting. You get the concept and you want to get it. Just stay focused. Don't worry about the ball work on the concept, feelings, positions and movements knowing the ball will come in the future. Do tons of practice swings at home with no ball. I keep telling people this is the fastest way to get it. No ball means no hitting. If you are trying stop hitting why would you hit balls? Do it in practice swings. Get it. Then add the balls back in later. This is also why I love winter for working on the swing. People can literally build a great swing at home over the winter then play great golf in the summer when they should be playing great golf. Glad you are still with me. Let's get you there.

Glad you enjoyed it! This is a huge tip. Hopefully everyone watches it. Get this and you will dramatically change your swing. If you lost it you must have taken a break from golf. I have taught countless people in this situation. Stay focused and you can easily get 250 back if not longer because when you were a kid you already learned how to fire the lower body. Just got to get it back instead of like most people have to even learn how to do it. You know how to do it. Turn the arms off and you will get it back.

BRILLIANT this. great example of how to generate speed. other day i went from 88mph to 98mph with driver freeing the hips and loosing the wrists. i was getting a good feel for it after a lesson. next day couldnt replicate it only managed 94mph and rarely got that. watching this i see clearly why. i was rotating everything together and forcing the arms to much again. results in my hips not turning far enough and causing the early extension to come back. i now see how to best train myself to use the hips. just rotate them and let everything else drop through. thankyou paul. my aim is to get to that effortless 100mph swing.

For me the best lesson your student video illustrates is that her magic elbow/monster lag move happens without causing any hip slide. Big lag and big hip ROTATION and you get that Iron Byron type whip release. It's a little bit tricky to drive your elbow into the slot without causing a hip slide that spoils the swing. She's awesome

Glad you liked it. Thanks. Yes, I do drag it for sure. Trying to keep my arms loose. Yes, this is a secret for sure. There was a period there when I first got it back in 1999 that I hit the ball the best in my life (rarely missed fairways and greens). I had someone shoot my swing from above and I noticed I was doing that. They seem to call it negative load. For more it was just not pulling it back with my hands. I do it to this day. I have tried hinging early with terrible results. So I will keep doing what works. I have what I call the paintbrush drill coming out shortly which shows you how to do this. Stay tuned.

Hey Paul I was wondering what your thoughts were with clubs for kids, 5 - 12 years of age. My daughter has been swinging for ~3 years, currently she is 7. I bought her those US Kids clubs but man they are light. I know a fitter locally who said bring up some decent heads and we can experiment putting some weak shafts and cutting them down, also adding SW to the heads to make them more like real clubs. He said juniors that go from those flimsy clubs to real clubs struggle mostly for a while. Currently I have some a 9, 7 iron for women lefty and a 5 hybrid, that my wife bought never got into it. I have a hiatal hernia that acts up fiercely when I do a lot of physical straining. Doing a massive amount of yard work in February made it bad. It took until May to recover. Then I started hitting golf balls and it came back. But I’m a huuuuuuuuuge arm hitter and abdominal strainer. When I heal up again soon, I hope to be able to go back to hitting balls using only lower body momentum and seeing how I do. Hopefully I can remain pain free that way. So if you have an ongoing issue why would you keep trying to swing hard. I would be all over and different way to swing. Well, I teach that way so you should become obsessed with what I am teaching. Let's start with this one: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/hZ-apZZ4lqyqZoE.html If I can do that it should prove to you that you should be able to hit it great with nothing and it would never hurt. I like this idea. The problem is the challenge to pretend you haven't the strength to get the club started down. Maybe we need a heavy-club training aid of suitable weight that would simulate the difficulty that a four-year old might have. Another thought is perhaps the child DOES use his arms - not to get it started - but only when the club gets into what might be called the "hitting zone', at which point the club has plenty of momentum. Fred Couples made a video describing his driver swing and says when he gets to the ball he "goes at it with every this I have." Any thoughts Paul?
@paulwilsongolf
@paulwilsongolf 2 жыл бұрын
The problem with the heavy club is you can't get it heavy enough. If you swing a heavy clubs that's out there then you go to swing your club it feels light which is the wrong feeling. You need your clubs to feel heavy as they do for kids. Just don't hit at all. Couples is a pro. He has done that swing many hundreds of thousands of times. You try to hit and you will twist the face. Just a few degrees and you will hit it sideways. Practice once or twice a week and you will never get it. See the club as mass (the whole club). Your body is an axis. Turn the axis and the let the mass go. Now you are using simple physics with no physical strength so it's very repeatable. Give it a try.

@Uncle19
@Uncle19 2 жыл бұрын
Incase he can’t answer, I’d guess you’re not shifting weight to the lead foot. Right before you start your down swing there should be a fall back towards the lead foot to shift pressure forward. This way when you get that great turn, you’re over the ball and no longer behind the ball. When your weight is back you also tend to flip your wrists in an attempt to get the club head to the ball so you don’t miss, this causes early release and the club head surpasses your hands prior to your hands being over the ball. This leads to no compression, no forward shaft lean, and no hitting down through the ball. Either fat, bladed or if you do catch it you’ll be hitting up on it so you add loft to every club, skying it. I’m sure he has some great videos on pressure or weight shift. One great tip I’ve seen is to put a chair at your lead hip at address, take the club back and you’ll move away from chair, then right as you start down, ensure you’ve shifted back to your lead foot and your left leg up to hip has posted vertically and you’re back at the chair or gently tapping the chair forward. This way you know you’ve come back to over your lead foot. I’m not Paul, however this helped me with the same issue :) good luck out there
@Uncle19
@Uncle19 2 жыл бұрын
One last thing, that applies to irons. It applies to driver as well however your point of release is earlier in driver and you’re leaning back to get upward angle of attack. Don’t try to hit down on driver. The “tilt back” needs to be dramatically less for irons than for driver.
@paulwilsongolf

You are firing and getting the backwards tilt but you are still not shifting the weight as you do this. Fat shots = too much weight on the back foot at contact. Watch: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/i92podp3p9LIpmg.html kzfaq.info/get/bejne/nqeKrLSJ1K-rkZc.html The high shots are you hanging back trying to get the tilt but coming up to clear the club so you don't hit it fat. Fire as you are but get the weight shifting and you will be fine. Might sound like you are firing too hard too. Gradually build it up.

@paulwilsongolf
@paulwilsongolf 2 жыл бұрын
Well you would need a club that would be proportionally as heavy as a 6-8 year old swinging mom or dad's clubs. So yes. How heavy is that? 20-30 lbs??? Not sure. Try it.

They sure are but the no arms strength is the major difference. I have taught countless people way more flexible than me that hit it nowhere. It is about the looseness.

Nope. Extended but not locked. Tons of pros bend it tons keep it straight. Force it straight and you potentially lock your wrists.

How do you start a back swing with dead arms ?
@gnarkilleptic4871
@gnarkilleptic4871 2 жыл бұрын
well you have to use some arm strength to get the club up, its a feeling thing. You dont have to actually turn your arms into cooked noodles, athough it helps to think that way on the downswing
@paulwilsongolf
@paulwilsongolf 2 жыл бұрын
You saw what kids do right? You are going to drag it back and get some momentum instead of hinging it immediately which is going to lock your wrists and tighten your arms. You are then going to lift it up to get it up to the top. Feel your arms up there. You need to be as weak as a kid. Think about how they would do it and relate it to yourself. Then fire the body. I teach powerless arms. This is in the downswing and through swing. You need to use your arms to set the backswing. Once you learn and memorize the position then it will go up there on it's own. Focus on the arm strength of a kid and do some swings and see what happens.
@paulwilsongolf
@paulwilsongolf 2 жыл бұрын
You need cooked noodles in the down and through swing. I I explained you need to set the backswing then turn the arms off. If you are all locked up as soon as you start back you will never unlock as you are ready to come down. So doing what kid would do would get you the feeling.

Same idea with an iron as well?
@paulwilsongolf
@paulwilsongolf Жыл бұрын
Absolutely. You hit it with your legs and hips NOT your hands and arms. Think about a kid. They have no arm strength. If they can hit it 240-250-260 they have to be doing it somehow. Why not copy them?

She does have a great swing, Paul; she’ll be a killer if she sticks with it. This video really did help me, it took me back to age 10 when I first started. I had adult clubs, and like you said, they were too heavy to swing with just my arms. I had a body swing, and it served me well throughout my youth, high school and college golf, and well into adulthood. Somewhere along the way I got off track, and didn’t get back on track until I bought your Swing Machine Golf videos in 2007. I continued to play well until about age 72 when I began to have low back, knee and balance problems. Now at age 77 it’s a struggle; my worst problems are balance (equilibrium) and weak knees. I just can’t swing the club like I used to. But, if I swing at about 50% effort, I can still play the game and have fun. Old age will eventually get us all, but I do think your body swing is the best way to play golf in our later years. If you get a chance, could you maybe do a video on approach shots from 20 to 50 yards? When you get to be my age those shots are crucial, and I’d love to see your current thinking on half wedges and pitch shots. Thanks…

Yes, I can't wait until she is bigger. She should be able to reach 300. Imagine that on the courses they play. So glad you found me and stuck with it. This is the whole point of what I am teaching. I want people to have fun for life. Although we all age this hitting hard is never going to work. I see it on a daily basis. Can't be much fun plus you end up in pain. Just do what you can physically do. Think of the center as turning back and turning through. However you have to do this to accommodate your body then do so. Not sure how many short game tips I am going to post. I have a membership site with over short game 100 tips on it so is it fair to give it all away when people are paying for it. It's a fine line. Pitching is simple. Set the backswing by hinging your wrists for the shot you are trying to hit. Once set, turn your belt buckle as I show in this tip to hit the shot.
