So batman and superman can be copyrighted, but their story cannot? Please elaborate.

No, their story are copyrighted, as they were created by a human who wrote said story. In the newspaper exemple, the newspaper was covering news of which occurred somewhat naturally, not a story created by another living person, other newspapers can write about the news on their newspaper, but they cannot just copy everything in the original newspaper word for word. The story of Batman/Superman are fictional, written by someone, so people cannot copy the works of Batman/Superman.
