Fun fact: when the author of the book sent it to his publisher they said it was way too scary for kids. So he proved that it wasn’t because he read it to his daughter and she begged him to finish it. Fast forward to when she is an adult and it turns out that she was completely terrified and only begged him to finish because she had to know how it ended.

Coralline is a animated horror film disguised as a child’s film and there is not a single person who can convince me otherwise.

It's important to understand that the story is Coralines way of seeing her parents and surroundings. Subjective perception. Coraline sees her new home as being boring, colorless and her parents are working hard cause of their deadlines while she just wants fun. Afterwards she sees more colors and has a kinder understanding of everyone she met. Including her parents. So they were not meant for us to see how shitty they are, but to feel for Coralines reaction and emotions.

The movie was a great adaptation of the book, but one scary detail from the book that wasn't fully portrayed here was how the tunnel connecting the two worlds was pulsating like a living being, very likely the intestine of a monster that even the Other Mother was afraid of. And every time Coraline crosses the tunnel, it knows 😰

fun facts: Wybie was never in the book. He was added because Coraline talks a lot to herself but it was changed to her talking to a real person. Also, the other father's song was foreshadowing that she was the beldam's target and the doll was spying on her.

Coraline's parents are writers almost at a deadline, and had just moved. It's not that they don't love her, they're exhausted. That's why we see them give her more attention when they've turned it in.

A detail that stuck with me is how Coraline sings her real father's song "twichy witchy girl" while she's feeling scared of the other mother. It shows how, after all, she connects the "boring" parents with safety

You know there is some interesting details: 1. The Other mom trying to be perfect in everything. And it’s even affect on her look: while Caroline’s mother have nose, that look a little bit to the left, the other mom have perfect, looking straight nose. 2. Mister Bobinsky have a medal ”To the participant of the liquidation of the accident at the Chernobyl nuclear power plant” 3. Seeds from the beginning of the movie, that we see when Caroline put they on the window is the same plants that Other Mother used to make garden look like Caroline. 4. In the end of movie we can clearly see that garden is actually is face of the Other Mom, which means that she actually existed in real world about a 150 ago.

I did a play of Coraline when I was in middle school, and I remember thinking, “should we be doing this?” Cause the story and tone of the play was so frickin creepy. A girl in my class actually had to sit out a scene cause she was so disturbed after acting out the souls, cause like those are the trapped souls of CHILDREN. Plus we were literal children at the time, and our drama teacher played the other mother. Having an adult voice the other mother irl is traumatizing. To this day I still remember weird ass details about the script, like the rats upstairs, the skeleton hand following coraline into the real world to get the key back while she sleeps… Anyway, this story is WILD

Dylan waiting and expecting for something ominous to happen at the end, even paying attention to the cat, and then STILL missing it is so funny

I like how at the end, Dylan convinced himself it was a good ending by ignoring the cat disappearing

I LOVE the part where Dylan just looks horrified when the mouse turns into sand and then nothing else is said about it

My favourite quote from the book sadly got left out. The fake Mr B asks why Coraline won't stay in this world where she could have anything she wants and Coraline says “I don't want whatever I want. Nobody does. Not really. What kind of fun would it be if I just got everything I ever wanted just like that, and it didn't mean anything? What then?”

One of the things I love about this movie is how the physical features of the characters are true but exaggerated. As a data analyst who works in consulting, I've met Coraline's father. His features and posture are truthfully only slightly exaggerated. This is the posture of a programmer/code monkey. I also find it an interesting commentary on how, in childhood, we exaggerate details due to object permanence still developing. Like, this whole movie is about how an only child named Coraline didn't get as much attention as she usually would for maybe a month during a stressful move and a crucial time for her parents' business; so in her mind, her parents are cruel and awful and everything is different and terrible. All details in this story are exaggerated by the imaginative mind of a bored child who has no real sense of time. Anyways, I went off on a tangent when I just wanted to comment on programmers' posture. lol

Dylan being more traumatized by Coraline smashing bugs than anything else in this movie is a mood 🤣 Also week 5 of me suggesting you should do a review on the Disney chronicles of Narnia. Love to see what you think of them :)

Fun fact. The studio that makes these movies (Boxtrolls, Coraline, Missing Link, ParaNorman) is called Laika and it is run by Thomas Knight, the son of the Nike founder Phil Knight. The studio never makes a huge profit from these movies but Thomas loves making them so his dad bankrolls them every time because the company is his passion project.

So, I used to have the same opinion as Dylan in regards of Coraline's parents, but Cinema Therapy made me realize they aren't really abusive towards her. Everything about Coraline points towards a kid that is used to have loads of attention of both her parents, but they can't really afford to give her that at this moment because they are just moving to a new house, with a tight job schedule and really stressed out. It is a situation that most kids (and parents) can actually relate. The fact that everything seems so much better in the end is because both Coraline (someone who wasn't really fond of her new house and neighborhood) and her parents are actually making a effort.

You summed up *perfectly* the plot of the movie at 3:25: 'Five minutes in, I have seen a doll being built. I thought it was Coraline. I think she's a human though.' That's it. That's the whole movie.

For anyone that may not have known or ever noticed, but Wybie says his grandmother doesn’t like him going over to the pink palace, he mentions his grandmother is the one that found the coraline doll and her sister went missing when they were children. One of the children that Coraline saved their eyes to release their soul, was the long lost sister of Wybies grandmother. That’s why she didn’t like the pink palace, knew about the dolls and they showed her briefly at the end of the movie and Coraline says “I have so much to tell you.” because the grandmother knows what goes on in that house because of her sister and what happened with the other mother.

the thing with this movie is that it basically shows how someone can completely misinterpret a relationship. from coraline's pov her parents were dismissive and didn't care about her, while other mother was attentive, caring, loving. but the reality is that her real parents were busy with work and just needed some time without shenanigans and interruptions so they could get it done, and once they did, their attention was back on their daughter, while other mother was only loving because she wanted something from coraline

as a person who has watched coraline over 20 times this was absolutely hilarious. i usually HATE when people commentate on movies i love but this was funny asf 😂

this movie traumatized me as a child, but i loved it wholeheartedly. my parents are A LOT like coraline’s (like, really, it’s creepy the little details they have in common) and they were always busy. i never dared to read the book cause it’s even darker, but i’ve been told it’s really great.

I always think of Inside Out as an alternate version of this movie bcs it starts with the same premises, a little girl and her parents moving into a new less than ideal house far away and having a hard time with a prevalent struggle that comes with it moving. Getting settled in a new place, your parents being stressed and then wanting to escape when both could have been avoided with some patience

I really like the way coraline is structured in the sense that the beginning and middle and end all have very different vibes like they’re different films almost and it helps take us on the journey with Caroline from how she felt at the start(bored but curios)to the middle (fun) then to the end(nightmare fuel ominous ending) absolute chefs kiss to the author cos the structure of it alone helps to understand coraline and that’s why despite it being scary kids dig it like I always temper watching the ending for the first time and the way it happens so suddenly helps you feel that cold snapped back to reality feeling that coraline does in that moment (joined by the pathetic phallacy of winter) just so good 10/10

The hardest scene they had to film for this movie was the mice circus performance. If you know anything about stop motion, you know it's ridiculously hard to pull off, especially like this.

You know you're a grownup when you realize that Coraline's parents are trying their hardest to stay afloat despite the sudden moving, accident and a deadline, with their daughter feeling neglected being just a side-effect of all of that.

The fact that this movie traumatized me as a child and now watching people react to it because that's a little easier to deal with my trauma, but then having Dylan make fun of their appearance xD

Something I love about Coralines welcome dinner scene is the writing on her cake, if you take note of the fact that the ‘o’ in ‘home’ has a double loop i think it was in it, which means something along the lines of a lie, but it is not in the ‘welcome’ so it implys she is welcome there but she isn’t home

In the parents’ defense, it was shown that they had *just* moved and they already had a deadline for work. Her parents were *super busy* for like 3 days. They needed a few days to focus on their work to meet the deadline and their teenager just refused to let up at all. Based on the ending when her parents say they’ve completed their work and theyre a little happier, we have to assume that they were just in “deadline mode” and Coraline was treating it like they had completely abandoned the thought of raising her.

Dylan, i think the message behind coraline is to not take anything for granted. Her parents in the beginning didn't hate her but they had just moved in and were really busy and also a little short on money so they didn't have much time for her at the time. Later on the mother realises she'd been a bit harsh with her and gets her the gloves she wanted. So in reality they did love her but were in a stressful state, love the Caroline segmentss

I'm glad that this isn't considered normal cause when I didn't smash em wth my bare hands I was laughed at for running away, now all I can hope is one day the person gets chased by a hive out of karma. Maybe thats too extreme...meh.

i think the sort of dull relationship with her parents really helps the message, actually. instead of it being a home alone situation where she realizes it's not so bad in her reality, (this theme is there but i don't think it's the main one) the focus is on coraline's developing independence and courage. she was scared, her parents neglected her, but she still found the resolve to not only save herself but her parents and the ghost children. it reminds me a lot of spirited away- both mcs are young girls who must go through a bizarre and unpredictable journey which matures them and helps them define themselves apart from the environment provided by their parents. it's an imperfect message because children shouldn't HAVE to go through those things, but they do. in the same way, i admire when parents are portrayed through media as imperfect and flawed with kids who then have to take on responsibility for the wellbeing of the family. it presents heroes to people who can relate to that and can be really empowering. in general i just love this movie (book is better and creepier too) so i could talk about it for ages. it's a really interesting piece of media once you start dissecting it

I read this book back when I was in 3rd grade and it creeped me out so much, especially the little illustrations on some of the pages. When I heard they were making it an animated movie I knew for sure they were about to permanently scar a whole new generation

Watching this movie again, I realized something. The two old ladies that read her tea leaves were technically both right. Coraline was in terrible danger and also encountered a tall beast.

Some fun facts! The movie is pretty true to the book! Although some things are even creepier in the book. For instance, the bug, candy, and vegetation theme isn't really in the book. SPOILERS: iirc the Other Father just turns into some giant mass and attacks her, even though he really doesn't want to. And the other Miss Spink and Miss Forcible are like...simply melded together inside some weird cocoon, as opposed to just being like...taffy in a candy wrapper. (Not that I like either version better than the other.) /END SPOILERS Wybie actually isn't in the book! The book really follows Coraline's POV, and they knew, for the movie, there was going to be trouble when it came to seeing how Coraline is feeling about things. She's a lonely kid, so she mostly internalizes things, which is fine in book format, because we can just read about how she's thinking and feeling. In a movie, though, we'd have to see and hear this. So they gave Coraline someone she could sort of bounce her thoughts off of. The voice of the cat is interesting. In the book, I do believe that it's described as a male voice, and while it is unlike Coraline's actual voice, it is apparently the voice that she thinks in.

Words cannot describe how happy I am that he reacted to Coraline, it's one of my favorite comfort movies. Theres so much little detail in the film that you wont catch unless you watch it a second time. Like when the Other Mother says that they like mud, and lightning strikes outside of the window, the lighting is in the shape of her needle claw hand. And the cake that says "welcome home" in calligraphy when there is two loops in the circle it normally indicates a lie, in the word "welcome" there is one loop, but in the word "home" there is two. Indicating that she is welcome, but she isnt home. Theres just so much to this movie, and I can talk about it all day

Coralline is my favourite movies so here are some cool little details about the movie I love: In the beginning, wybie says that the well is « so deep, if you feel in in the middle of the day and looked up, you’d see a sky full of stars » this is because the well is another portal to the other world like the door is and like the other entry points the cat uses. It’s always nighttime in the other world, and in the shots where you can see down the well it looks exactly like the tunnel. This is also why at the end you see the cat go into the other world since coraline got rid of the key and the hand in the well, accidentally sending them right back to her. The song the dad sings is a warning to Coraline, because all the characters the mother creates actually truly care about her the way their supposed to like the dad and wybie On the cake it says “welcome home” with a double loop on the o in home. Double loops in a lowercase letter o symbolise that the writer is lying. There’s no double loop in welcome because she truly is welcome but she isn’t truly home. Wybie’s grandmother knew about the other world and the other mother through her sister, and that is why she forbade wybie to go to the pink palace. Additionally, that is why she never rents the house to families with kids as wybie says in the beginning, but since wybie got to the age at which the other mother starts taking children, she rented the course to coraline’s family to protect him. Every time coraline comes back you can see the mother getting progressively more thin and spidery, her neck gets longer and even her clothes get darker and more spikey. There is a theory that the other mother was the original owner of the house, because in the real world the garden in the backyard is shaped like her face, just like it was shaped like coraline’s in the other world. There is also a theory that the painting of the sad blue boy in the real world is a painting of the other mother’s son, because in the other world, the painting is happy and even after the power starts weakening and things go back to their original creepy forms, the painting never changes and stays happy. There are more but I’ll leave it here haha

Fun fact Many publishers believed the story to be too scary for children, and since Neil's (the author of the book) daughter was too young to read it he had one of his coworker’s daughter’s read it. She approved the book and it was published. Come to find out, years later Gaiman talked to his co-workers daughter about the book. She actually thought the book was terrifying, but lied to her mom about it since she needed to know what would happen next. Imagine if she didn't lie about it? This masterpiece would have been still hidden in only a book not an adaptation as well 😭😭😭
