I skied Corbet's Couloir twice, in 1998 and in 2002. Both times, I found the most difficult part is the entry. Side slip to YOUR RIGHT and JUMP TURN nearly 180 degrees again to your right and LEAN WAY OVER YOU SKIS!! Don't hesitate when you start, these two move should happen in about 3-4 seconds! Once you are down the chute, GO STRAIGHT until you are clear of the rocks before attempting your first turn!! Now in my 60's with 35+ years skiing under my belt, I am not sure I would attempt it again!

This isn't an event, it's just a busy day with regular people on a run open to the public. There is a professional event closed to the public done once a year on corbet's, this is definitely not that.

It looked like he had it together in the air but then he broke out of his tuck and extended his legs, as if he thought he was about to land when in fact he had another 5 - 10 feet to go....It didn't look like the hard pack caused his fall. It clearly exacerbated it though...

The jump turn seems like the best way to go if the shaping of the entrance allows, but you have to have your jump turn skills down before you attempt. Gotta work on those next season

Seems smart to start on the left side (opposite everyone in video), head towards the right, then steep quick turn to the left before this ledge they're all creating.

I lived in Teton Village for 3 years in the early 70's and am 70 yrs old now. I skied (with my roommate) Corbetts 14 times in those years. My roommate skied it over 20 times ! The path that gets results is the least intuitive. We used to call this run "Sucker Punch" because it fools you and then you pay. The absolute best line is straight at the rock wall on the LEFT. Go right at it (obviously don't hit it !!) Then a hard right turn followed by a left and you are all set. Don't sideslip in to Corbetts. Everyone does it and a ledge forms. That's a mess and a yard sale waiting to happen.

@@lering6658 @lering Agree with you, but partially - Yes, ski will fall off from binder but not just due to jump / land. I think person on this video when landing, he falls back, then binder opens - this is intended to do so. I still think it was not adjusted on Advance setting, as from jump & land it should not came off that "easy"... ⛷️✌️

For sure a pair of binders with at least din 13 it helps, but here the problem seems his posture wile landing; his hands goes back and he put his weight on the tails of the skies. If the guy were on high din setting he probably would have broken something on his knees.

At 0:08, Corbet's "Conloir??" Someone doesn't know what a couloir is, but the above is far more than just running a gully on this mountain, he takes this to a whole different level, nicely done! I wonder what ski instructor Corbet of Jackson Hole thinks of this run! I used to ski a lot but have never snowboarded, too old do the kind of run in this video now! Amazing!

Eeesh! That dude dropping in at 2:41 eats it and slides head first 150ft before stopping *right before* the rocks AND his bindings didn’t even release. Dude, check that DIN
@ImOriginallyGreen
@ImOriginallyGreen 2 жыл бұрын
I would potentially argue that his skis not releasing is fine there because he immediately gets up. The din theoretically should be set to the highest number where the force needed to have the skis come off is the the just below the force needed to break bones/tendons/ligaments. The fact that he immediately got up indicates that he likely didn’t break/tear anything so his bindings are set correctly. This is the reason why conditioning isn’t important when youre and advanced/expert skier. The nature of certain runs and chutes requires a higher din setting so you need to be strong enough to handle that.

Curious, why do they choke up on their poles?
@Osnosis
@Osnosis 2 жыл бұрын
Too steep to get a decent pole plant. Almost every one of these example enters incorrectly. They lean back (fear) which guarantees they can’t make the proper turns below or handle the very fast increase in speed. I don’t do that goat path entrance; better to go straight in (more or less) with anticipation of hitting a high speed. Didn’t do it this year, but usually do it once or twice per season.

Personally I'd try a traverse to the left then a jump turn then a sideslip to a traverse back in. Seems like a guarantee option assuming more snow is there. And by jump turn I mean like the ones used in backcountry not this video. You start perpendicular to the hill, go down, jump up, land. Without moving much downhill. Like a 180. If there was a bit more snow in the left but the middle also would have worked for this method.
@garyjeong7148

Yeah I was thinking the same..but I think it would be tough to pull the move you’re talking about there, needs to be one smooth turn in back to the right before you slam into the rocks

Mmmm. I think it just presents a different approach as your feet are tied to the same plane. You can't lean as easily into the entrance for stability like you can on skis. I would bet the entrance on a board is still similar to those @1:08. Come in more straight on and hammer down on a jump turn to get your edges engaged on the break to the right.
