This is a video about Corbin Burnes, but it's also a video about pitching in the data age. We'll review concepts like spin rate, spin axis, spin efficiency, active spin, Magnus effect, and gyro spin, and how they relate to the Corbin Burnes Brewers. The Milwaukee Brewers are lucky to have a Corbin Burnes Cy Young winner on their team, that's for sure!
This episode of Baseball Bits, a Foolish Baseball production, will also focus on Corbin Burnes cutter. Is this the best fastball in MLB right now? It's pretty darn effective. We'll compare it to other cutter offerings from pitchers like Kenley Jansen and Mariano Rivera. Justin Verlander and Mookie Betts also make cameos in this one.

There's one thing that isn't mentioned here- his mechanics. He basically did a Giolito- changed to a short arm coming out of the glove which improved his timing and overall delivery. Upped his velocity to hit 97/98. Look at 12:04 (short, compact delivery/post-pandemic Burnes) and then 12:15 (long, full open delivery/pre-pandemic Burnes).

@ryanr4556
@ryanr4556 2 жыл бұрын
I didn't even catch that until you mentioned it, but you're absolutely right. The long arm release also had a little extra time for the hitter to see the ball in his hand before release, and (some hitters) likely could see it was a fastball grip versus a breaking ball grip. That short arm release lessens that time, on top of having tighter pitching mechanics.

As a Brewers fan, I vividly remember Burnes getting called back up late in 2019, and some people pointed out he threw a cutter now, and I just remember someone on twitter saying something along the lines of "Let's not overreact just because he has a cutter now, he still sucks" or something about how it wasn't a big difference lmaooo look at him now

I remember so many people saying that his 2018 was a fluke and he was another AAAA prospect who should've been traded. They're all pretty quiet right now, and the Brewers have arguably the best rotation in baseball (when healthy). Burnes, Woodruff, Peralta, Lauer, Houser, Ashby. Goodness.

Due to your vids, I not only managed to get a deeper understanding of a sport I never really cared for but also a lot of knowledge about the most interesting things, ranging from noteworthy yet weird players, to absolut legendary moments throughout the hiestory of the sport. I guess what I am trying to say is that you are doing a great job. I really like your videos (since the comedy is always great, you make things that are hard to grasp for beginners like the advanced metrics easy to grasp) and I appreciate the effort that you put into them. I don't know how people can say that analytics are killing baseball when it can literally give you quantifiable ways to see someone's potential. Analytics are creating jobs for players who are picked up by organizations smart enough to look at these numbers.

Way back in April 2019, Ben Clemens at FG wrote an article about a very intriguing Corbin Burnes start to begin the season against the Cardinals - 5 IP, 12 K, 1 BB, and 3 HR. It was like the Max Scherzer classic line before Max figured it out. It was particularly interesting because Burnes averaged 2912 RPM on his fastball in that start. That's an average, not a max RPM. Here we are, three years later, and oh boy, did he figure it out in a big way

I'm a pitcher in a Rec league of sorts, and I throw a 4-seamer, split-changeup, and a cutter. Having that lower 3/4's right handed arm action, that cutter always gets batters every time I throw it. It starts in the right handed batters box and just zips over into the inside corner. It's a pitch I really need to throw more of because of its movement. Mixed with my split-changeup for lefty's, it's a recipe for success

The ability to throw two similar pitches with opposite movement is beyond valuable. Normally it is 2 seamers that run and sliders that break, but the cutter sinker combo can be devastating. Pedro Martinez and Gregg Maddox worked them to perfection. A hitter didn't know if that fastball on the corner was going to jump off the plate or back on. Maddox was particularly good at working those two pitches inside to lefties.

Man the fact that we had Burnes, Hader, Peralta, Williams, Lauer, Woodruff and the league MVP hitter in Yelich and didn’t even make the World Series that year hurts. Stupid Dodgers Anyways, it’s nice to see people acknowledge how good our boi is. Thanks for the vid!

also, Look at the trail of his hand when he brings it back. The ball is hidden behind his body making the pitch harder to track and load up on. He used to bring the ball behind his body and hitters can see it and time it better. Now the ball is invisible until delivery.

Cool to see 3 Brewers on the list at 9:35. Hoping they can make a meaningful playoff run this year.

Growing up I always had a stupid amount of movement on fastball and I eventually switched to a sinker ball main grip and created my cutter by using 4 seam grip but moving it slightly to the left (right handed thrower) so this is sick to see 😂 obviously I’m not a pro athlete but that’s just dope knowing a pro used a similar process
