100% I have one 50 inch 1080p Samsung TV in my den as a 2nd tv I got in 09, and I've upgraded the Roku/Chromecast on it at least 7, or 8 times since no way a smart TV is gonna last this long without being obsolete, and needing a box plugged into it anyways

I've got a Vizio SMART TV that's been kept up-to-date by the company, but I'm not sure if that will continue going forward since Walmart bought them out. Vizio did have their own streaming service (Watchfree TV) but it appears to be lagging in on demand content (and updated content) versus free apps like Tubi or PlutoTV, but the live TV content seems to still be maintained.

I feel like the one major drawback of most of the free add supported services is that so much of the content is the same. For example, Film Rise had sold their library to pretty much everyone so it doesn’t really matter which service you watch. At that point it comes down to UI and whatever exclusive content they might have.

From what I remember about Crackle and Popcorn Flix is they have large number of breaks and ads with similar content. I do believe most people watch Pluto TV, Tubi and Roku for ad supported services
@scoobydooami2

I think the biggest one is that Netflix/Amazon/Disney and the others now get both paid subscriptions AND ads. We're talking like $7.99/mo + ads. How is a completely free ad supported service supposed to compete with that? That is deliberate by the big ones that are returning us to cable. They are cannibalizing the truly free services.

We were casually looking for a new TV when the rep at BestBuy suggested just getting a Roku stick since there was nothing else wrong with our TV. We did and the Roku stick works great. Actually as TVs last longer and longer the need for a separate streaming device becomes more necessary. Unless smart TV manufacturers suddenly decide to start extending support and updates to their TVs beyond the year or two that is currently the typical time frame that most manufacturers tend to provide support for smart TV

I watched Crackle when it still had Seinfeld’s show. He did funny side videos where he would meet with a Crackle executive. However, Crackle had an annoying UI then where they would play a show in the background until I selected another show to watch. Once Seinfeld left, that UI caused me to not go back for a long time. When I again recently visited the UI was corrected, but they had no content that I was interested in.

The You Tube TV UI is the most annoying, it will continue to play a show and takes four to five moves to get it not to play. It is so annoying that I no longer subscribe. You Tube it self also has such an annoying “feature” of continuing to play a video. I watch a number of shows in an I pad and You Tube kept using a survey asking “how do you like the continue watching feature?” They gave two choices “I love it / I don’t know what it is.” Indicating to me their programmers are tying to protect their jobs or their brains have turned to mush.

My so called video snob friend thinks the built in apps in his TV are just fine too. As long as it works is what most people want in this space. The more expensive Android TV boxes and Apple TV by far is a much better experience but comes with the price tag to match. If you have an iPhone I would still argue that you get an Apple TV. The basic Roku is my go to unless I'm on my computer. both my ancient flatscreen and the smaller smart TV someone gave me have Roku because I can hit the three or four streaming services I have access to and I can usually find something to watch ... even if it is something I have seen a lot and it's just running as background noise to ground out the tinnitus .. Apple TV was too expensive when I looked into it originally.

Loving ROKU after several years of use. Glad to see them finally expanding the product line with security cams. Hoping they offer higher-end wireless speakers that include upfiring and Atmos. The market is in place and is ready for premium upgrades.

Happy Birthday Jessica!!! Unless I'm forced to, I don't think I will ever use a "Smart TV" for streaming. With more and more TV providers capturing and selling their customer's private data, holding your TV hostage forcing you to accept consumer-unfriendly Terms-of-Service agreements, and force-feeding you their own advertisements, the "Smart TV" will remain nothing more than a monitor. If needed, I can switch out a streaming player (eg. Roku box) for much less cost, and orders of magnitude less effort, than switching out a TV. I have numerous TVs in my house and exactly 0 of them have connections to a data network. I consider Smart TVs (i.e. Monitors with Streaming Players) to be much like the integrated stereo systems of old, jack of all trades, master of none. Let the TV manufacturers stick to creating higher quality TVs and let the streaming box companies revolutionize the software used to deliver the content.

More and more what used to be called low power stations are operating over the air, making streaming of ad supported stuff less and less necessary.. Since many high speed internet services still have a data limit unless people pay a large premium for unlimited, watching over the air is cheaper.

I have three different brands smart TVs and a wife who hates to learn new remotes and menus. I put Google cast on all TVs so we have a common menuing system and remote. Also as other people have said the boxes update themselves more frequently than smart TVs do so they stay current and are less likely to go obsolete. Roku has one feature that to me is very unique and useful and that is the headphone jack on the remote. Great for late night listening without disturbing others.

Happy B-Day Jessica! and yes Luke, leave the bloopers. Perhaps when you get to 1million subs you can do some post production before you publish your videos but for now we (I at least) appreciate you "keeping it real."

I really like the Chicken Soup for the Soul channel that Philo has. Am I correct in thinking Philo subscribers will lose it? And will Philo offer another in it's place. Thanks

The company is going bankrupt, unless there is some sort of restructuring, a buyout or some other legal wrangling, the channel is likely going away.

My New Samsung Smart TV with the latest software has a big problem. The 3 Samsung Smart Tvs in my motorhome also has this problem. Pluto freezes, MLB Freezes. So ROKU is the way to go.

You can, and always have been able to, cast from your iPhone/iPad to Apple TV. Relying upon a built in streaming app is a mistake. Eventually, the companies stop updating the software for the builtins, then you have to go buy a set-top.

👍👍👍 Take a photo of your TV with the fire TV app on it and then take that photo put it on a thumb drive plug it in your TV and use that as a background. That goes to show your TV is always listening so if your TV is listening who else is listening? 😎☕

ROKU is great, Chromecast is better at casting to TV from my phone _ I don't like FireTV because it tries to interfere with anything else I input to TV & the interface isn't what I like. I'd rather use plugin devices instead of "Smart TVs".
