This tube I made for the mizzen mast on a Core Sound 15. It is 4 layers of 8oz glass tape. The mast was used for the mold and is 2.5" OD.

when covering it with plastic, does it become heavier? (i mean after peeling it off, the only thing changing is the finish becomes smooth but does that also increase weight?)
@alanosauras9 жыл бұрын
I'm pretty sure it was polyethelene. Not sure what type cellotape is. I've had good success also with clear packing tape just don't use really cheap thin ones as they can break and become a mess. Cling wrap also does NOT work.

Hi, we make a project at school. We are mechanics students and we need to know what type of plastic you used because we search a plastic which doesn't stick to the resin. Thank you for your answer.

that was really cool. so you used just regular plastic sheet?

I used E-bond Resin which is available only commercially but sold by B and B Yacht Designs. I don't necessarily believe that the type of resin I used contributed much to the finish. Another really good tool for removing air bubbles (which I did not use) is what we call an "air roller" www.briery.com/vortex/images/roller.jpg aluminum ribbed roller pretty cheap and reusable. Pops any and all bubbles.

Was there air bubbles in that tube? I think what catches my attention most is the transparency. The resin I use from Aeropoxy is not that great with fiberglass. Majority if the time boat epoxies have air release attributes. Do you have a technical data sheet you can email me?

what type of plastic did you use? great job!

I guess some plastic that is used for painting the house (that you put on the ground 👍)
@prasadronblack20079 жыл бұрын
The plastic you used is it a special plastic cause few months ago when i was trying it on a sellotape it didn't work. I hoped the epoxy wont stick as its plastic but it did.

I have a question to ask if you don't mind answering. The plastic you`ve used is a regular plastic or a special plastic to work with fiberglass?
@jameshicks7125 Жыл бұрын
It's regular plastic sheeting. LDPE (Low Density Polyethylene) Standard hardware store garden sheeting. Hardly anything will stick to LDPE or HDPE.

What resin was used for this tube? I like how you got a transparent finish and no sign of air bubbles.

Nice! Can this technique be used to make a carbon fiber mast?
@TheArchitect2163 жыл бұрын
yes, but you are better off using mold release or PTFE rather then plastic and finishing with peel ply as it makes secondary bonding easier and makes the surface easier to sand.

Hi there Sir. I know this video was posted 7 years ago. However do you think this could be scaled down to like 8mm rod. To make fibreglass archery arrows? My challenge would be to get 6mm stiff rod or pole that won't bend when applying the stuff
@alanosauras2 жыл бұрын
Maybe but I wouldnt try when carbon arrow shafts are mass produced and very cheap. Much lighter and stronger.
@musaadfelton39092 жыл бұрын
@@alanosauras Thanks for your response. Here where I live in South Africa. Carbon arrows are expensive. The fibreglass arrows are actually cheaper here than the carbon arrows. So I thought maybe I could try making arrows with this concept.

I think you'll need a different method to get the tube off the mandrel. I'd probably try using a steel rod polished and waxed. Maybe even slightly tapered. Just not sure how easy it will come off. I would also use uni fibers for most of it. I also would just order them. Heres some real cheap glass ones. Ya the carbon ones are a little expensive. m.alibaba.com/product/1600513949951/Fiberglass-Arrow-Shaft-Fiberglass-Hunting-Recurve.html?s=p

@@alanosauras Thanks Alan..appreciate the response..wow.the shafts are very affordable on alibaba. The only issue I have is the shipping costs. To me it's 102 dollars. That's R1500 in my currency lol. But I guess if I I ordering over 500 shafts then it would be worth it.

I agree. The epoxy is also petroleum based and is probably unsustainable long term like all petroleum products. But I don't see it going away either. Hopefully we will learn to recycle it in a profitable way soon. On the plus side, building a boat and using it to experience nature is a good way to connect to the environment which will hopefully lead to wanting to protect it and take future actions that are less damaging like not using plastic bags, supporting recycling efforts, biking instead of driving, etc. I believe at this point that only advances in chemistry and technology will lessen the effects of what we've already done to the planet, humanity is not capable as a whole of stopping the use of non renewable resources, sadly todays society is too greedy.
