There is a harder method that might produce a more visually good pattern. Contour the oval to the outside to produce each of the lines of the key that are "parallel" to the oval. The lines running inside to outside should be perpendicular to the oval which means that they will be slightly farther apart at the outside than at the inside. Each key will be different from the next for half the border. The other half should be a rotation twin of the first. What I just described would be a terrible amount of work - creating the radial lines and cutting away all the unneeded parts - but it would produce the most artistic effect. It is never easy to put a straight segment onto a curved surface.
