Corey Deuel decided to give pyramid a try during the Kremlin cup 2019 where he also played pool 10 ball. He played several pyramid matches, but for some reason only single game was recorded - so here it is!

Pyramid billiards deserve more recognition worldwide.Despite its simple rules, it is actually as challenging as snooker
@jaybe2908

Its definitely challenging, to challenging I would say! there doesn't seem to be the same danger of missing a pot or playing a bad safety like snooker or pool, and no excitement of a big break or runout like the other cuesports, it might be fun to play but it will never be a great spectator sport.
@keyboardmamma
@keyboardmamma 3 жыл бұрын
Definitely. In some aspects it's harder than snooker given the incredibly tight pockets and large, heavy balls. Both are very difficult in their own right.

@@jaybe2908 I completely agree. These guys are wonderful at there sport as well as snooker. Pool/billiards is struggling as it is we dont need to throw a new game where no one makes a ball for an hour. I live in the united states and the pool halls that survived the covid-19 pandemic for the most part have diamond tables with smaller pockets Some have brunswich gold crowns. I guess what Im trying to say is this will never take in america.

@@jaybe2908 You are so wrong, you are watching a world-class pool player having fun and a very mediocre player that would lose a tournament in my local pyramid hall. You have to see top Pyramid player's games like Krijanovski, Abramov, Balov, Shkoda... and so on they make it as fast as a pool frame, and they play open discipline the game a pace of nine-ball.

I hope Americans realise now how amatuer their tables are with such massive pockets. I would contend though even those pockets are a little too tight. Snooker table pockets are probably the best compromise. What makes American table pockets so bad is when you compare the size of the pocket in relation to the size of the table. Not oly that the straight cut just sucks the balls in, even if you are an inch or so off the rail you are guarunteed to pocket a ball.
@homersimpson8561

chocol8tsundae yeah I agree. I like pool a lot because of the different formats and strategies and stuff but they need to make the game harder at the professional level. Chinese 8-ball is good because you see professionals really trying hard to run racks

@@chocol8tsundae "even if you are an inch or so off the rail you are guarunteed to pocket a ball" Not even remotely, not a a typically cut pocket for pros, especially. On many of those tables a FULLY STUCK TO THE RAIL ball will not go, at higher speeds. You need to play on those tables a bit more, I think, before you comment on how they work. And you don't seem to understand that the fact that the pockets are larger doesn't make any difference since ALL the competitors on any given table have exactly the same setup. It just makes it different in that many balls are pocketed by pros in succession, but jump on one sometime, and see how many 6 - 10 packs (consecutive run outs) YOU put in plying eight or nine ball. You are talking out of your hat, and that just makes you sound ignorant. OH, and if you want a DIFFICULT American pool game, try one played with pockets that are INFINITELY smaller than these, because there ARE NONE. Give some 3 cushion a shot. I get so sick of these chest beating "ours is bigger and badder" crap. Almost always nonsense. And I was so enjoying this until I had to run into your ignorant and poorly thought out comment.

@@homersimpson8561 Exactly, this is the first pyramid game I've seen and it is really cool. I would love to give it a shot sometime if I could find a table, which I doubt. VERY interesting. Almost NOTHING in common with pool or snooker, that I can see. I was amazed the first time I saw that ball go roaring into that far right pocket and just STOP in the jaws. It was obvious what had happened to me, it's just that I'd NEVER seen a ball 'wipe it's feet' in the jaws and stop without looking like it was even moving. Just looked like it rolled into a wall of REALLY excellent sticky tape. The commentator was great, too. "Cory Dual attempts an INSANE shot ..." Enjoyed it. I would be interested to hear what Corey had to say about it afterward. Now I need to go find some PRO level pyramid play.

Deuel is well on his way to becoming a legend. Players like Deuel and Reyes who dabble in many games at a high level have a repertoire of new skills that they can apply back to their own games. For example, Reyes has made some of the best masse shots ever seen on a pool table and he can run 100 in straight rail billiards which requires that skill as a matter of course.

Guys don't be fooled by this video: the table is TERRIBLE! It must be poorly assembled, new model tables never stuck so much in the jaws; Second Corry clearly does not understand the game, he just has a fun, If I would train him for three months while sparing with Pyramid hustlers, he would be a top-notch player in the pyramid player as well; Third, that guy Yanovski might be afraid of Correy or out of shape... he is playing the very bad game because the game is much faster when it is executed properly; Fourth Pyramid is the easiest kind of billiard among all because there are no forbidden balls, that makes that game positionally simple.

@pyramidbilliards536
@pyramidbilliards536 3 жыл бұрын
Yes, every ball which went in gives you one point. Traditionally all pyramid balls are numbered from 1 to 15 plus colored ball without a number. There is a Classic pyramid game where pocketed ball gives you amount of points equal to it's number, but nobody plays it these days, so numbers don't matter.

@pyramidbilliards536
@pyramidbilliards536 2 жыл бұрын
Heating is an option on premium tables, but not sure if these particular tables have it. Since the accuracy in pyramid is quite insane - heating may actually be very important for top players, especially in cold weather in big sports hall like this one. Cloth is worsted like on pool tables, but usually is slower and many players complain about it.

@pyramidbilliards536
@pyramidbilliards536 3 жыл бұрын
Nope, same 12-13mm tips are used, mostly 13mm. Actually many pyramid players always used original pool tips, because no others were available and actually they were great, just keep in mind that with such powerful shots hard tip would last longer, so there is a trend for hard tips these days among pyramid players.

@pyramidbilliards536
@pyramidbilliards536 3 жыл бұрын
In free pyramid (where any ball can be used as a cue ball) you just continue play as is. But here we have single cue ball game, so cue ball must be respotted after being potted. In pyramid traditionally potted balls are put on the ball rack to track score in the current frame - each player has his own rack. So object ball and some other ball have to be put onto the rack. Since we can't put the cue ball there - the rule is to choose any other ball to be taken off the table and respot the cue ball. There are several variations of pyramid rules for all occasions here (I don't remember which is which regarding the official game name): the scored player chooses the ball to take off the table or his opponent makes the choice, the cue ball is respotted in the house and can be potted on the next shot or it can be respotted anywhere on the table, but can't be potted on the next shot.

Poor sportsmanship by Yanovsky by calling those fouls?
@pyramidbilliards536
@pyramidbilliards536 4 жыл бұрын
Can't say for sure from the video alone. If in doubt - consult the referee and they attempted that after the first episode, but seems couldn't find one, so decided to play using these rules. Actually Yanovsky also made safety foul later in the game and gave the ball to Deuel. So I guess - they just decided to use some specific ruleset and later both adhered to it. This might have given Yanovsky a bit of advantage, since Deuel is not used to more complex Buffalo safety rules (very few players are), but I don't think this was a deliberate action from Vlad. Since usually players hit very hard - even in case of the miss balls just make all required contacts on their own and few people pay attention if they didn't. The only exception are specific safeties when player wants to leave the ball touching the cushion and everybody watches if the ball will make the contact or not.
