I think Corey is attributed as starting that soft break, and later several tournaments had various rules to prevent doing that. I think Shane is one of the first to do powerful breaks with just swinging his arm. Seems to me Fedor changed his break style after playing against and watching Shane. Also Dr Dave shows examples using physics and slow motion cameras. A hard tip stays in contact around 1 millisecond. If you use a soft tip, his example was 1.7 milliseconds. Since the cue and your arm weighs more than the cueball, the cueball will immediately accelerate much faster than your cue. Your pool cue will actually slow down at contact, and you can accelerate your cue again after contact. He has charts of this. I can’t see much benefit of wanting your cue tip to be attached to the cueball longer. You swing your cue to transfer power to the cueball. The quicker you transfer power, the faster the cueball will will move.
