Dear Miriam, thank you so much for this video! Thanks to martha Stuart and her half fast tutorial I have wasted so many dyes and husks. I have made beautiful wreaths, dolls and flowers and I was very close to giving them them all up because I couldn't find a way to dye them. Thank you!

I have heard you should bleach them first so they don’t mold. Is that necessary?

I use the ones that they make tamales with and it is not necessary but if you used ones that were not prepared first, that would be a good idea. It would also help with your color. The husk is yellow in color. That makes colors like blue turn green.

I am using fabric dye colours....how much quantity of colour and water should I add for 10 corn husks ....and how much time to boil...how much time to dye...plz plz answer me as soon as possible

I would only add enough water to cover the husk well. Consider that you enough to boil. The less water the better (brighter) the dyes will color. You boil them till you get the color you want or the color is not getting any darker because it has absorbed as much color as it can. I usually end up putting all of my fabric dye in but you can play with that too. Remember that corn husk is a yellow base not white. This affects the color outcome. Ask if you have more questions. I have a great question about corn husk doll clothing can you use corn husk color died or use fabrics scraps for corn husk doll clothing like Indian corn husk dolls basically please help me with the advice you had thank you ms Tyler Jones from mechanicsville va 23111

Due to the theme of a corn husk doll I would decorate it with died corn husk. I have 2 corn husk antique dolls in my living room right now. My mom use to make them for my older sisters when money was tight. But if you like the fabric colors and you think it adds more, then do that. There is no right or wrong. have you tried koolaid dye? I use corn husk for traditional baskets and basket hats (Iam palouse and kootenai) and I no longer live on my grandma's reservation who she knew people that gave my family already dyed husks. My mom use to do it but since its been so long since we moved ( about 14 years) she cant remember the process. I know other people use koolaid dye for hair, porcupine, etc. and I wanted to know if you have tried koolaid dye.

I have not used the Koolaid but know that people dye with it. I would try a small pot of water and a little amount of corn husk. They lest amount of water the more dye you will get. Just enough water to cover the husk and add your Koolaid and boil it until it is not absorbing any more color. We did not dye any corn husk where I grew up on the rez. I know everything else we had to use nature to dye the traditional colors for wool and baskets. I know you have to boil the corn husk to get the waxy layer off and make it more absorbent for the color. Try it. You never know till you try it. I see where people add food coloring to it to make it dye better. I have done dying with food coloring and it works well and has not faded on anything I have tried.
