While the weather allowed, we picked up our corn pile and put it back in the bins that had been recently emptied.

Our family milked cows in Ohio for 50 years till I was 22, money was hard to get and we needed to expand or get out. Regrettably we got out, spent the rest of my life missing it. I really enjoy watching the videos on KZfaq, keep up the good work....

Always a toss up of when you need more storage or not. Bumper years you put it on the ground, put up a new bin and you don't need it so it's empty or 1/4 full. One of the many difficult decisions of being a farmer.

I guess I don't get this. Corn is sub 4. Beans are sub 10 but yet guys are spending 300+/- for rents. I don't see the point of harvesting this much crop, to have handle it multiple times, especially when you say your averaging 120 to 180. Even if your were getting 220 bu/acre I don't see how it can pay.

Jns27 I'll say a couple of things. 1. Time is a big factor, if you have a decent amount of acres (1,000+), there just isn't time to run a truck straight to the elevator from the field or it will leave the combine sitting there at idle, we all know when a machine+worker sit at idle you're losing money. Another option would be to buy more trucks to put into the rotation, this also cost money. 2. Would be the ability to store grain to sell at a better price. Also storing it for later frees up time in the harvest and hauling grain gives full time employees something to do in the off seasons.

Suppose they could get a mother bin if it came to it but that would take up alot of space when not in use. A mother bin is a much bigger version of the overloader alot of Australian farmers use them they can hold alot of grain at a time.

What's cheaper, a new bin or concrete for your corn? You seem very proficient at removing the corn so you've done this before.
@haydenbyars4202
@haydenbyars4202 7 жыл бұрын
Jrbpa 57 this is the second time we have piled corn. A new bin would be nice and there is more work involved in piling it. But the pile was a much cheaper option than building a bin. Especially when we don't always use it depending on the crop we raise.

Ya know... I feel like you guys could get this done ALOT faster and efficiently if you took a page from a wood worker's workshop handbook... Build/make/buy/whatever a giant vacuum... Then you can just hook it to your machine there, or build a crane thing with a huge hose... That way it'll suck up all the corn and shoot it right into the truck/hopper.

Henrik Krogsgaard We actually used a grain vac the first time we did the pile. I didn’t get any footage of it that year. But we decided after using the trachoe that we thought it was easier to use it instead of moving and setting up the vac all the time. I guess it’s just our personal preference.

@klugfarmsklug9323

How do you get that trap on when it's full? I would think you would need a concrete floor. Why not put a auger on the floor, to the center, a 8 or 10" to help empty it out? i see you have aeration tubes, place it along side one of those. It wouldn't need a sump, just open the top end some, or even a couple holes along the top of it.The excavator could help feed the auger.....

We hauled out the corn in the bin first. Then while we had a window of good weather we put the piled corn back in the bin so we don’t have to worry about cleaning it up while we are busy later and so we don’t have any spoiling problems. Also, We would have had to hire a bunch of trucks to get it cleaned up in a timely manner. Once it’s in the bin we can just haul a little along as we would like.
