Course Description: This course will examine the historical philosophy of the towering Black scholar and great freedom fighter of the 20th Century. We shall engage in close readings of Du Bois’ classic work, “The Souls of Black Folk” (1903) as well as subsequent essays in his magisterial corpus, especially his classic autobiography, “Dusk of Dawn” (1940)

What an absolute pleasure to listen Mr. West. I'm surprised he isn't mentioned more in "general culture." I had only heard of him a couple of times but I never knew how intelligent, wise, and accomplished he is. I'll be reading his book "Race Matters." Also, thanks to David Blight from Yale because it was listening to his lectures on the civil war that I was introduced to Du Bois's book and subsequently found Cornel West's lecture on the book. David said that all American citizens should be required to read the souls of black folk and now I understand why.

Solidarity is the wrong term we use. It should be Cohesion. We are Human Becomings not Human Beings -- for Being implies statis. Yet humans are NOT static; we are constantly transforming, constantly changing. Solidarity is too calcifying a term. #Togetherness = #Cohesion + #Synchronicity

I wouldn't use the term "Ivy League" in relation to people like Cornel West. The Ivy Leagues promote and represent increasingly the kind of market mentality that people like Cornel West, Fred Moten, and others vehemently criticize. The Ivy Leagues are unfortunately no bastions of free knowledge anymore, but factories that reproduce the administrative and the ruling class.
