Today we install a corner filter and talk about other options for porett foam. A really simple DIY project to make and eay to use filter for any size tank. The Flex piece Im ordering will 4" wide by 13" long at the same thickness as the stuff I have here. Or perhaps something a little more porous.

Thanks for the video, you gave a thorough review of what looks like a good product. I like the looks of the corner filter and the idea for the dam at the base is a good one. One thing I never understand is why people are rinsing their sponges in dirty filter water. No matter how hard you try, the sponge remains dirty. I always either just run them under the tap (the denitrifying bacteria is everywhere in the tank. They’re everywhere man!) or for newer tanks that are not well established, fill a five gallon bucket with dechlorinated water and pour that over the sponge as I squeeze. Usually into a sink till it runs clear. Thanks again for the entertaining and informative videos.

I use a poret divider for my breeder (discus) tanks. Besides being a great filter medium, it's the easiest, sturdiest "divider" I have found. I use it to make the tank "smaller" temporarily, to help the parents find/gather the babies when they first become free-swimming. It also keeps the babies away from my filter intake. Once the babies attach to the parents, I move the foam all the way to the side as a sort of intake pre-filter and continue using the same tank as a grow out. I can avoid moving the babies from tank to tank like that and maximize my tank usage at the same time.

I use a corner filter on my 150 as well. They are the best. I used a canister filter with modified intake and discharge rather than an airpump or general pump.

I'm planning to use one of these corner filters on a 75 gallon Tanganyikan cichlid tank build. What I like about this filter compared to a canister filter, is that with an extended power outage like I get in my area from time to time, the bacteria in the filter stays alive and won't become toxic to my critters when the power is restored. Enjoyed watching these videos on the Mattenfilter!

PORET FOAM IS A SHRIMP KEEPERS BEST FRIEND! Hands down my favorite filter,I use the corner matten as well for my german rams in my 20g long tank,it was initially setup in June and I seeded it with another poret filter from my lfs and by george I haven't had to rinse it out yet.in fact there is a layer of bio mulm goodies that my baby rams eat so thats why shrimp will love them as well. You gotta be patient these filters get better with time so let your tank season slowly and you'll be rewarded in spades. My filter is now mature to the point where de-nitrification is happening deep inside the 2inch 30ppi foam because that bio layer I was talking about above slows down the inflow whereby the middle of the foam is oxygen poor enough to support anaerobic bacteria. Quite simply the most amazing filter and just about the only one where denitrification can occur. I've tried all those sintered glass biomedia etc and they are just nitrate factories which is fine but I want more dammit! I just ordered a new kit for my 29g tall because I'm my old zoomed turtle filter and the bio media inside is not denitrifying fast enough for my liking if at all,my plants somewhat do that sucking up ammonia and nitrates but I still have to do weekly water changes. Anyhoo Pektec your gonna fall in love with your mattenfilter and I predict within a year your going to ditch all your hob filters and go with the mattens. Peace out

One more thing I forgot to mention you can seed the poret with stability and other bb in a bottle products to kick start the filter. I prefer tetra safestart plus, just make sure the bottle is not near expiration date.

Another great use for poret foam is to cut blocks that fit over your canister or hang on the back's intake, it pre'- filters the water going into your filter an cuts back on filter maintenance. All you need to do is take it off and rinse after your weekly water change you can go 3 times longer before having to strip down your canister.

jan truter this is a good idea, from experience i would recommend using a very porous and small piece of foam. Using a large and very fine piece can overwork/overstrain some motors, just a friendly tip to keep in mind 😊

if you imagine a canister filter ... and you look a higher quality foam is normally bumpy, this increases surface area, best example i could find www.amazon.com/Fluval-A236-106-206-Bio-Foam/dp/B0060QJ42S ...so there area that first touches the water as its being pulled through is bigger

This is a simple HMF, you can buy this Foam in any aquariatic Store in Europe and it cost depending on the ppi Nummer from 10 to 40 in 2 x 2 feet and " to 2" or 4" thick 10 to 20 bucks. This Form cuts like nothing with a metal saw blade or an sharp bread knife. Way more simple to make the Foam fit are plastic or stainless steal L or U profiles that you just silicone in place. The side Version even it is ugly is may one of the best filter solution there is. depending on your tank space you has a huge Media cappacity and very low energy costs. lets say you do an HMF on an 6.5 x 2 x 2/200 x 60 x 60 with 180G. An HMF at this tank a with 2" Mat containce 18 Liters of Media cappacity. An Jet lifter that you showed has a moving ratio of 250 Liters of air to 700 Liters of warer. For an ideal media surface mofement you need 2 to 2.5 tank volumes of filtration. A good air pump with 800 or 1000 Liters of air per hour need between 14 to 20 Watts and you can move around 2800 to 3000 Liters of water with it. Now compare this to an FX6 with 5 Liters of Media cappacity and 42 Watt of Power useage.

Funny for a second you looked like Joey ! lol DIY Sean ! Good build and as we all see it now what you get wood last months box you used it as weight. See there is many things you can use drift wood (especially the African Kalahari desert hard wood). Don't use brick cause it can scratch or break your tank if falls out of your hand ! So Sean I see you going high tec. You become a high pecktec. lol I wonder where you going to set it up and how it looks when you set it up ? I think you mentioned that your wife told you if 1 tank comes in the other has to go. 1 in 1 out! Hmm I wonder if she still saying it ? lol Like the baby when you feed them : 1 for mommy 1 for daddy 1 for sister 1 for brother etc etc ..... 1 tank for you 1 tank community 1 tank for her (though she don't want it) 1 for daughter 1 for your father 1 for breeding 1 for the grow up tank 1 for cause you got some gadget for it for free 1 for ....... etc lol ! I can just picture : She goes home ...... Sean ..... really ? Another one ? Why don't we live in the sea and just build a bubble house where we sleep and all around us water and fish ! Or Uhm and which tank you going to replace this time cause there is no more room ? Seam how many tank is enough ? You go " But honey look at them they are so nice and quiet and you know ...... don't you like them ? Come on honey just one more I promise I get you that dress you liked or that shoe or I take you for a week vacation may be a weekend spa ! lol No Sean that's it you turning this house to a fish tank and when people coming over every 10 minutes they have to go and use the washroom cause the sound makes them go ...... lol and nowhere to sit and all over fish stuff. Sean I told you no more tank and you promised that too......... Sorry but I had to cause it is funny at least to me ...... and I'm sure there are other people out there who had similar situation like this before ! So Sean I do like to see this tank in action ASAP somewhere inside the house. Not in the garage ! lol I got your back buddy ! lol

Yes. Rubbing alcohol is the best way to get caulk off anything. Even if the internet tells you to use a razor blade. Neither one should go in your eye though.

If you need a truly silent air pump "Aquael oxypro 150" is your best bet. You can only hear it when you put your ear right next to it. The output is controlled electronically so it doesn't run at 100% all the time. It looks very stylish as well: images-na.ssl-images-amazon.com/images/I/61nJleqKa6L._SL1000_.jpg My girlfriend got me one for my birthday and I love it.

I ran across printedreefingsolutions.com. I do not think they use the Poret foam from Swiss Tropicals. Poret is good stuff. Thought of you when I ran across them. Worth a look. :)

Hack: get a cheap electric knife to cut the foam. its like cutting air.

Foams so expensive though. Over $30 a tank, just for the foam.

That’s true. But it doesn’t seem to break down at all over time. This tank is still going years latter. A lot up front though.
