We had the loveliest morning exploring Porthluney beach. It has been awarded, awarded seems the wrong word when it’s something negative, but none the less, it has been awarded the Brown Flag status number one spot for not only Cornwall but the whole of the UK. This means that the water pollution here in Porthluney is bad… the water contains dangerous levels of e-coli and bacteria… apparently. Now… I have to admit, I was expecting maybe more debris… murky water… maybe even sewage or a smell.. but to be quite honest this beach is no different on viewing to any other beach we have visited here in Cornwall… and believe me.. we’ve seen a fair few. On the surface level it seems to be a perfectly gorgeous sandy cove, there were lots of families and dog walkers around. Children and adults were swimming and playing in the water with no care in the world.
So would I recommend a visit to Porthluney, 100%! Would I personally let my kids swim in the water… as a local, probably now… as I am aware there are plenty more blue flag beaches within easy deriving distance with lifeguard cover and cleaner water… take that as you will….
After a lovely walk on Porthluney we went for a little stroll around the country lanes adjacent to the beach, there is a decent amount of parking and a cafe and right opposite is the very large and impressive looking Caerhays Castle… after walking around here for a bit we ended up deriving about 5 miles up the road to Mevagossey where we strolled around town, looked in the free small aquarium on the harbour and had a cheeky pasty. A gorgeous little harbour town which is certainly worth a visit! Let’s go take a look around.
Porthluney Beach
Post Code; PL26 6LY
Accessibility; Sandy/rocky entrance to the beach. Otherwise a fairly flat beach. Car park area is level, level walk to the castle and castle grounds are wheelchair friendly.
Dog Friendly; Yes- All year round.
Parking; Free pay per hour carpark
Facilities; Cafe and Castle Grounds to the opposite side of the road.
Admission; FREE to the beach (Pay to Park) To enter the castle and gardens there is admission costs.
Mevagissey
Post Code; PL26 6UE
Accessibility; Wheelchair/ pram friendly in most places however cobbles make it a little bumpy in places!
Dog Friendly; YES
Parking; Multiple pay per hour car parks in and around the harbour area or up the road on the outskirts of town ( a few minutes walk)
Facilities; Cafe’s, pubs, restaurants. We also went into the free aquarium which is on the harbour front. Tons to see and do.
Admission; FREE
