Natural floor cleaner - The perfect formula for Hardwood, Laminate & Luxury Vinyl Plank flooring

If you have recently invested into a hardwood, laminate, or luxury vinyl plank floor then one of the first questions you may have after it is installed is, what do I clean my floor with? We always recommend following the manufacturers recommendations for proper maintenance, but we also know that a lot of people are looking for a more natural solution. Water and vinegar is one of the most popular alternatives. But how do you know if you have the right proportions? It would be a shame to ruin that new investment by using a cleaner that is too acidic and will ruin the finish over time. In this video we take a deep dive into the best solution for an all natural floor cleaner that gets the job done but doesn’t harm the finish on your floor. View the recipes down below.

Can you premix a large patch of the cleaner (alcohol, vinegar, and dawn version) and then store it for use as needed?

As long as all your ingredients are clean (free from contaminates), specifically the water used, I don’t see why not.

But if you use such a low amount of vinegar and alcohol wont you lower the solutions bacteria killing ability? When I followed these measurements to achieve a more neutral PH balance, I also noticed that it left less of shine when compared to the previous measurements I initially used consisting of 1/3 vin, 1/3 alcohol and 1/3 cup water.

There's always ways to modify a formula to try and get a small boost in cleaning potential, the key is getting a balance in the 6-8 pH range while doing it and observing that ingredients like isopropyl in too high of a concentration can kill bacteria but also they can leave a dulling effect as well. Currently our formula is about 2.3oz of total cleaning for the blend to a gallon of water while many concentrates tend to be in the 1-4oz range per gallon. Some have used 91% isopropyl for their own formulas in high concentration having it leave a white haze on their floor instead as it was too strong for the urethane. Similar to how it can dry your hands out it was doing that on their finish. Most of these planks aren't shiny and have a matte level around 5-15 (out of 100) so I'm not sure on that situation there.

Yes, it is safe for all pre-finished floors except for oil finished floors

Will adding a few drops of lavender essential oil throw off ph ?

Lavender oil, like all oils is non soluble, therefor you cannot accurate measure the PH of it. You can however measure the PH of the carrier oil if it is water based. Since there are so many different brands of lavender oil it is difficult to give you an accurate answer without testing it. I would think that if you added a few drops for scent it would not affect the overall mixture much. If you are going to create your own cleaning mixture I would recommend purchasing some PH strips. They are very inexpensive and can be ordered online or purchased at your local hardware store.
