One of the most anticipated, and ceremonially significant parts of the coronation of King Charles III and Queen Consort Camilla was what the royals would wear. And everyone wanted to know if Catherine, Princess of Wales would be wearing a Tiara. From real fur to faux tiaras, and some surprising and creative robe choices, the royal family were all dressed to impress. Now that the ensembles they selected have been splashed on screens across the world, let’s take a look at the history of English and British coronation fashion and see how the 2023 Westminster abbey looks staked up.

I don't know if the other European royals in attendance would have been required to wear their tiaras, if the BRF wore their tiaras? Given the economy and the fact that the other royals don't even have coronation ceremonies anymore (The monarch takes his/her oath before the parliament in a suit or a dress.) Not inviting all of the nobles seemed like a snub[1]; but Charles wanted to include more of the common people (voted to attend by the people in their organizations/villages.) I think that Charles made the right decision at this point in time. Catherine's, Sophie's and Charlotte's headpieces looked (sort of) like tiaras. (I am happy that he dispensed with the Louis xiv/George iii style stockings and breeches) 1.) Under the current fire codes/safety codes, Westminister Abby could not have been packed to the rafters with the same number of people as were there for Queen Elizabeth's coronation. I think that for the Queen's coronation there were over 3,000 people (WA's max capacity is about 2000 people maximum under modern fire codes)
@soveryeriii
@soveryeriii 11 ай бұрын
@msalas5963 no. It isn't the law first of all, but historically all women wore tiaras at coronations. It was simply Charles trying to tone down the showing off expensive things so that people don't want to get rid of the monarchy, which is stupid since they already own the tiaras. Nothing to do with outshining anyone. There's a different between protocol and a law also.

If I am not mistaken blue was always associated with FRENCH royalty - and as the English monarchy had so many links to France and even owned huge chunks of land in France (until Joan of Arc kicked them out) then I should imagine that royal blue comes from these associations - of course French soldiers wore blue coats and British ones wore red.

It doesn't help, that those red and blue ceremonial robes are rather reminiscent of cheap, polyester graduation robes 🫣. They really do not look luxurious to the modern eye, since we associate bright, primary colors with kid's clothes, not special occasion wear. And Charles and Camilla being well, old, didn't help, either, imo. They looked like somebody's slightly feeble grandparents, who were dragged out of their living room and put into weird costumes, to be paraded around for fun, to me. Sorry. No offense to them or anyone, who is a 'fan' of the royal family. It's not a judgement of their personality or anything, just my spontaneous impression upon watching this. It's a shame, it's such a big no-no, to skip a generation in such cases. At least to me and with what little attention I pay to this whole thing, it would have made much more sense, to continue the succession with William and Kate directly.

Yes The slippery gaudy “robes”that Catherine was wearing did not feel well placed in the Corination of King Charles lll. But I come from the Antipodes where robes are made of flax prepared with great skill and decorated with bird feathers 🪶 My husband was gifted one when he retired. I have “seen” the English Queen wearing one (and looking most uncomfortable) and also Charles and Camilla wearing such robes as a uniquely kiwi ceremonial garb. I can’t imagine young Prince Willliam, the current Prince of Wales being willling to wear something so ecologically unsound. (Cf ivory He has strong views about that given the absolute horror of what was done to get the tusks off ….)

Instead of sympathizing with him, his family and the media have been treating him like he's a traitor. I admire him for stepping back for his wife. I don't understand why the Indian lotus was incorporated into Elizabeth's coronation robes. India was made a dominion in 1947 & became a republic in 1950, thereby causing dissolution of the title 'Emperor of India'. George VI didn't hold a Delhi Durbar & after 1947, no new appointments were made into the Orders of the Star of India, of the Indian Empire & of the Crown of India. While the incorporation of Pakistani symbol is acceptable in Elizabeth's 1953 coronation as Pakistan didn't become a republic before 1973 & Elizabeth's coronation oath did mention her as Queen of Pakistan, but no such case can be applied in case of India. So on what basis did the British crown try to attach itself with India ?

Chuck looked rough. His grandfather had an entirely different body type, and everything fitted weird on him, which is sad. Should have just worn his naval uniform, and had it altered so it could be undone from the back for the annotating. He had a screen anyway. He looked like he was wearing a bowling shit. Guessing it was hemmed up, because the tunic came past his grandfather’s knees. I like Queen Mary’s crown, but it didn’t look right on Cam. Those are ultra picky complaints. If it made Chuck and Cam comfortable, who cares? Fun watching the spectacle though.

What exactly is the distinction between a tiara and a jeweled headpiece? Besides semantic pedantry I mean?
@somedragonbastard
@somedragonbastard 2 ай бұрын
Tiaras are semicircular, cover only part of the head, and are worn on the front of the head/hair. According to Google at least. Tiaras are also generally more casual, like how they can be worn for us peasants' weddings and stuff instead of big fancy royal events
@McRambleOn

Yea, wish they had worn tiaras- not doing so to look more relatable or less snobby “Royal” is completely ridiculous and irrelevant- it’s almost more offensive to hoard all that jewelry away and NOT use it. 😒

Don't mean to be rude nor disrespect, still I couldn't help but think about Princess Diana and how she would dress in this ceremony throughout the vdo.

I don't mind Kate getting her fancy headband. In fact, I'm happy about it! If Camilla gets this fancy-ass new robe that so many Queen-Consorts prior to her didn't feel the need for... why not Catherine investing in a beautiful headband she can actually bequeath to her daughter someday? It's timeless and lovely. And Charles was the stick in the mud who said no tiaras... even though every lady up there either has a family tiara or had been willed one for life by Queen Elizabeth. I'm guessing the "No Tiara" dictate was from Camilla who didn't want to be shown up by any of the other badass royal woman. Well, sorry ma'am, but when Anne, Princess Royale or Princess Catherine are in the room, you will be stood up. Anne for being a badass and Kate for being a style icon AND a badass. I think Diana would have been proud of the cheeky move.

The outfit that Charles wore looked like something from an amateur high school production. Sorry, but I was too young to remember Elizabeth's coronation and probably won't live long enough to see William's (I'm only 4 years younger than Charles and do not have the longevity genes that he has) so I wanted to see formal attire plus the peers and peeresses in their robes and with their coronets. If it is going to be everyday dress attire, then just have a swearing in like all the other European monarchs.

If you don’t mind me asking but can you do a video on the illegitimate children of king James the second and I am asking because among his kids with his mistress Arabella Churchill was James Fitz James 1st Duke of Berwick and among his descendants are the dukes of alba as Dukes from the 14th to the current Duke of Alba are descendants of him and James Fitz James the first Duke of Berwick is an interesting person since he is the nephew of John Churchill 1st Duke of Marlborough and besides James Fitz James the Duke of Berwick there were other illegitimate children of king James the second and they included Henrietta Fitz James the mother of the first Earl of Waldegrave and a daughter named Catherine Sheffield The Duchess of Buckingham and Normanby And together Catherine and the Duke of Buckingham and Normanby had an illegitimate son who became the first Sheffield baronet.

Everyone who goes to Sea World are people who go there because there aren't any Orcas, and for me, until I have a child with a desire to go, I'm not interested in returning to Sea World because the Orca show was my favorite part of the theme park, I went to the one in San Antonio, in Tejas! My favorite colors are Crimson, Gold and Purple with Gold, and I'm interested in Kashmere! It was so obnoxious to have a law which prohibited people from wearing certain clothes, they already could not afford them, it's redundant to be de facto and de jure, and as a legislature, you didn't make a law which mattered to anyone. I'm not necessarily growing the same thing as everyone else in Louisianne, I'm growing indigo to sell powder that can be mixed with oil to be used solely on canvas so NOLA is known for indigo paintings similar to pencil sketches, but everything is all indigo, and I'm growing sugar cane and other things, and my family members, on their lands, grow greens and okra. I think we'll all raise chickens. Poulle de Brest, and we'll name a town Brest in Louisianne. People place way too much value on the Greek tragedy! Life's not tragic, it's just everyone's experience has been a literal representation of truth of life in the universe. The universe is literal, and people prefer deaths by a million scratches. Whether there is overt scratches on the wrist is not what's only relevant, some scratches are more overt than others, but they all have the same effect. Alexandra and Elizabeth, the Queen's mother, had the most beautiful dresses, and as time progress, the dresses and dress ought to be better than that which came before, just as the ancients made pots we charish more and we think them better at making pots. It's not for us to automatically be better than ancients, we ancients and not to have the best technology of all time and we have poorer pots than ancients, though our pots could be better. Queen Mary of Tech was most beautiful too! It's to clean up Bourbon street anyway, it's still welcoming to frats, but older alum who can afford costumes and venues which are rented for private parties where people then get dressed in costume like in Venice. Venice is NOLAs sister city and everything, and once more people have to have ceremony, the major ceremony which unities all people better be special. Every good person would support the war effort of good versus evil, but it's not good for everyone to be a Joan of Arc, and it could be someone pursuing their own path, and stroking their own ego, not someone who actually is helping win the fight, and some people will have different opinions from the majority, but they have much Agape and are devoted the love most intimate to someone deserving of true love. Louis needs to be a military man, and perhaps spend a year or two in space on a ship, there could be a younger woman in his life most important to everyone.

kate has a great fashion sense... camilla- not so much. the queen's dress was not flattering... the crown she wore was too big for her head, and the absence of the giant diamond was distracting... when the camera zoomed out, she looked like a giant chess piece wobbling around the cathedral and balcony. i think charles should have allowed tiaras. it's what we expect... it's what we want. they don't get paid by the british tax payers to dress like normal people. i personally feel they should be required to wear their crowns and tiaras everytime they are in public.

Well, it's damned if you do, damned if you don't, really. Some people are pissed of, because they're not getting their money's worth (so to speak), if there's not enough sparkle. Others would resent them for flaunting their riches. Personally I find it rather tactful, considering the economic strains many people suffer from atm.
