Many people of the Navajo Nation, a 17 million-acre expanse stretching across Arizona, Utah and New Mexico, have serious underlying health conditions, and COVID-19 is only making things worse. It’s hard to wash your hands without running water. NBC senior investigative correspondent Cynthia McFadden reports on TODAY as the NBC series On the Front Lines continues.

As a Diné, the worse part is the corruption on the Nation. While the nation has 3 casinos at a cost of close to a billion dollars, it amazes me they did nothing to invest in their infrastructure. Recently, they received $600 million, but the money sits in the tribal bank account waiting for whose brothers, sisters, cousins, and fellow tribal elites will get their share. The tribe is rich with resources and contributions, but they portray themselves as poor and needy, that is the greatest crime. We, the Diné are a proud people, it saddens me that the Nation begs for handouts when it has the resources to take care of its own, but instead gives the money to tribal elites and players within the power clans, leaving the rest to fend for themselves. Come on, Navajo Nation, do the right thing! Quit exploiting the elders, the invalids, and the weak for this agenda, you're better than that.

all native reservations are a prime example of socialism. here on the navajo reservation there is little to no police presence, alcoholism is prominent, drug abuse is always on a daily basis (actually all forms of abuse), elderly abuse and neglect are the rule of some people here, financial mismanagement is constant. how can we call ourselves "sovereign" when all of this here ? 1 thing i am grateful for is that our situation here isn't as awful as venezula or china.

I am Native American, part of the Navajo tribe and I have several family members who live on the reservation, honesty, our American government gives so much money to the Navajo Nation, the American government is not the problem. The Navajo Nation President is a joke, all the money goes to the Navajo Nation and it stays at the top. They waste the money on fancy travel and nothings gets to the people. The Navajo Nation is ran by Democrats and their failed policies. They have enslaved the people to rely on the government while capitalism would give them a chance at a better life. Its a complicated problem, but I assure you it's an inside problem that needs to start with Navajo Nation government accountability. They should have asked Mr. Nez why he's allowing his people to live with no running water and third world country streets while he travels in luxury. Should of asked him why he wastes the government funding money and watches his own people live in those kinds of conditions.

@savannahcook7548 4 жыл бұрын
@@PatrickJDylan It's hard to watch. The leaders always blame the problems on not having enough money. But throwing money at the problem isn't going to fix it when they mishandle it. The people need better education, business classes, and they need to empower the Navajo people with the idea of independence, not reliance on government checks and casinos. My heart is heavy for them.
@savannahcook7548
@savannahcook7548 4 жыл бұрын
@@junesorenson279 The President and vice president are elected, so they would have to be elected out of office. I personally believe that education is the problem. The people are led to believe that more government handouts are what will help them, while not understanding how a healthy economy works. Many of the kids leave the reservation, attend college and never return because job opportunities are off of the reservation. If they would encourage education, small business, and good basic financial responsibility, they could generate their own finances and better their living conditions and lower their poverty. Sadly, they are not taught these things and are lead to believe they need the government's handouts. Alcohol is another factor that worsens the problem. Many of my family members struggled with alcohol because their parents did and what saved their family was the Lord, they got saved and they learned what the Bible says about taking care of their families, and financial responsibility. More education, job opportunities, and the Lord (more conservative views) are what's going to help, not more money from the government (more lefist views). If you want to see what bigger government and socialism looks like, just look to the Navajo reservations, it doesn't work, and its why I'm for capitalism and more conservative values. This of course is only my opinion, I can only speak from my own experience and how I have seen these ideas save and help many Navajo families.

I just watched another document on them they're so spread apart I don't know how it's spreading so fast of course the lack of water doesn't help it's a disgrace they have to live like that but with such isolation it seems like it wouldn't spread

Haha sorry I don't think it disgrace, we like to breathe fresh air , summer rain, the pollen of wild flowers, crisp winter air..not like you smelling all kinds of pollution, sewer, trash...no privacy in the trashy cities..its our choice how we live, whiteman stole our water, land, and you think its disgraceful of how they took everything the Native Amerian had..

America's first citizens of this country? marginalized? treated less than human? How can we call this nation just and fair.
@keeshabrown7353

Many of us have never called the USA just and fair. There's been blatant hypocrisy since (and even before) day One. Many have been taught a romanticized nostalgia of USA since birth. I was only 7 when I went home one day and told my dad i had a problem with the words "land of the free and the home of the brave" and "with freedom and justice for all" being recited in school. I told him I wasn't going to participate in saying these things unless & until they are shown to be true. He understood and agreed. I don't have a problem with these concepts and ideals at all - my problem was and is with the notion that these are current realities for all in this country and abroad. Thank God all humans have inherent and immeasurable value and worth, even if we aren't treated accordingly. This will not always be.

I'm a Veteran of the Armed Forces, 34 years young, and yes, this is happening and is real. I don't have running water nor electricity. It's May 1st and we have yet to see any federal, military, state, community chapter assistance. But not to worry, we are running our local watermill dry growing our own food. Isolation is best when you grew up with it all your life.

This is so heart breaking. The people let down again by a government that doesn't seem to see them. It's unbelievable that no one sees what's happening to them. Their eyes are blind to the problems of the people of the reservations. They see what is happening with people in other countries. But never look at what is happening right here.
