I always knew them as Crescent Wrench or adjustable wrench either way always comes in handy. I saw one on SRF that now has a locking plier or vise grip style handle, time to buy a new tool! Great video👍👍

The amount of force on the two jaws are equal. The movable jaw is weaker than the the fixed jaw. The corner of the nut should contact the movable jaw as close to the body of the wrench as possible in order to reduce the leverage on that weaker jaw.

This is exactly what I'm thinking. I've been told all my life to do it as shown in the video, but it does put the force higher on the movable jaw which would seem a bad thing. On the flip side, there's a lot of force in using a wrench that isn't twist, and using the wrench the opposite way of what's shown in the video puts all of that force on the movable jaw, which would seem a bad thing. I'd love to see it actually tested. It's not obvious to me which way really would be best (despite what we've all been told).

Question. why does the wrench is better to be used in auch direction? for me it looks like the weak point of the wrench is the adjustable moving part, meaning if you turn it in recommended direction the force is applied on the furthest from the handle point of the adjustable part, hence this increases the force with which the thread thing gets affected (I mean if you know what momentum is) at the same time the stationary part that touches the nut is affected on the closer point to the handle which is no biggie since it is strong..
@ThatFixItGuy
@ThatFixItGuy 3 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the question. When you are tightening the way that I am showing the little movable jaw is forced towards the wrench body. If you do this opposite you will be straining the little jaw and wearing out your wrench faster. All about that little jaw. I hope this helps.

Please tell me why I manage to get my adjustable wrench stuck on the bolt im loosening? I torque it and the then I cant get the adjustable wrench off the bolt because the wheel wont spin. Im guessing its from turning the adjustable wrench the wrong way when tightning and its putting alot of pressure on the thumb wheel thus jamming it up? Also shouldn’t your backup wrench have the adjustble jaw facing upword because the fitting is trying to spin the same way as the copper male adapter?
@ThatFixItGuy
@ThatFixItGuy 3 жыл бұрын
I don't really know why some wrenches pinch that way and will not open back up till you beat it of the bolt. I think if a bolt or nut gets rounded off even the littlest bit this seems to occur it could also have something to with the play in the jaw of the wrench. I may have to buy a could more different wrenches and do some garage testing. As for the back up wrench the L of the wrench should always be taking the torque. Your backup wrench will be the opposite of your main wrench. The backup is just tightening in reverse essentially. I hope that makes sense. I'm writing this kinda late. LOL

I came in here to watch how adjustable wrenches were used and due to the image shown in the title clip. The small wrench was shown which was the one I was interested in. No sooner did it get shown than the video shot some where else. I understand in theory that they should all work the same, but, I needed to see how the small was one put together in real time and in reality. Mine just rocks up and down, and I wondered if someone broke mine or swapped/switched. I did notice however in several parts of this video, that you seemed to use a finger to hold the grip in place. Maybe just the way you work. Don't know. I wanted to know if I needed to consider it a loss and move on and buy a new one. Thanks for showing them anyway, and I guess since I don't think they can be repaired (without welding, which seems a lot of effort for such a little tool), I'll have to toss it.

That direction of using a adjustable wrench came from old cast iron wrenches that would break. 21st century tool steel wrenches can transmit more torque and less flex when used in the opposite direction.

Shocking how many people either don't know this or don't believe it. And so far I haven't found anyone who knows why it's better to use a crescent wrench in the correct direction. I don't see why these people can't tell the deference by simply trying the damm things both ways. You can literally see them rounding off the nut when used the wrong way. If you look at the angle of the handle it appears to be pulling the wrench off the nut when used the wrong way.
