We’ve all heard the startling statistics regarding incarceration rates, and our burgeoning prison industrial system. What’s less known or acknowledged is the high rate of mental illness among our prison population. Nearly one in five offenders in our correctional system suffer from mental illness, and Lefford Fate believes this is unacceptable. After decades of de-institutionalizing mental health and criminalizing minor drug offenses, jails have become a primary locus for mental illness. Fate offers convincing evidence for why we need to be treating mental illness rather than locking away individuals.
From Command Chief of the nation’s premier F-16 fighter wing to the wings of an overcrowded prison system, this mental health and military professional has some thoughts about how prison can better serve the mentally ill.
Lefford Fate serves as Deputy Director of Health Services for the South Carolina Department of corrections, where he oversees 600 medical professionals serving over 20,000 inmates. Now retired after 31 years in the US Air Force retiree, he brings his experience as a military mental health technician and certified addictions professional to bear in advocating for improved mental health services in our prison system.
This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at ted.com/tedx

I agree, we the people need to take a stand and do our part in getting involved in supporting this movement. There are a few individuals I personally know with mental illness that I was told went to jail for loitering. Meaning this individual was standing without purpose to long at a public facility. These people needed help not jail. I was so concerned for their safety as well as the others in a place like that because their mind set. Mr.Fate, with this movement now on the rise I know help is on the way. I also know as the voices of the country we have to help you see it through.

This is a real problem for our country. By putting this message out for many to hear and consider, Mr. Fate has taken the lead on tacking an important societal problem. We can all help in spreading this message and attacking the problem. As he suggests, speak to your elected officials and ask them what they are doing for the mentally ill in our prison systems. And to Mr. Fate, thanks for being bold and taking on an issue that most chose to ignore. Well done, well said.

Thank you, Scott Dearduffwell said. This is much more than a prison problem. As a veteran yourself, you have probably seen your brothers and sisters in arm struggling with silent wounds who wouldn't seek treatment due to the stigma of mental illness or mental distress. These people also deserve our help and attention to prevent unnecessary suffering. Thanks again for you kind words.
