@@paulsnell534 Eighteen is generally considered the age of majority because it applies to so many things and culturally it is when most people leave home for college. The variations are not only different state laws but also different federal laws such as the age when you can drink alcohol, so a cultural age of majority is a reasonable way to go. … However, when the age of majority varies, it usually is younger than eighteen (because one should definitely be allowed to get married, be tried as an adult, and go off to war before you are allowed to drink alcohol🙄).

This isn't a correction so much as a fun fact, but the "PIN Number" thing actually has a real name! It's called "RAS syndrome," which stands for "Redundant Acronym Syndrome syndrome."
@britanniadix5580
@britanniadix5580 2 жыл бұрын
And it occurs far more than people realize - "HIV virus" and "VIN number" are also these kinds of initialisms/acronyms, but they tend not to get called out for it as much. Without getting into the books of material on the subject, repetition does fun things to abbreviation in people's heads, where folks forget what the actual letters stand for in favor of the whole definition. Adding to the fun fact parade: the word "children" in English actually has two plural markers in it, the -r- and the -en, for pretty much the exact same kinds of reasons.

@@barbarabishop9362 it's a legitimate term used in psychology circles to describe these lopsided relationships that exist between the followers and the followed, and the beliefs/behaviours which arise from them. Fascinating stuff, but also can get a little bit scary at times when you learn just how strongly some people can latch on to them and very quickly start mixing these behaviours and this perceived bond into their sense of self-worth etc. For most people it's just a bit of fun though, as seen here. :)

Astoria, Oregon, is an interesting town architecturally-- the movies "Goonies" and "Kindergarten Cop" took advantage of it quirky look. It is very well-known and important historically as the oldest American settlement on the West Coast, founded in 1811. Nearby was the winter quarters of Lewis and Clark's expedition. Like many small cities, it was somewhat frozen in the time of its greatest influence, which would be the early 20th century when it was a canning/lumber center. It also is tightly packed in geographically by the Columbia River in the north and heavily forested hills to the south. As a result, the "big box" stores that serve the city are in Warrenton, Oregon, just across Young's Bay and along the coast. These stores along Highway 101 are a fairly new addition, and include Costco, Home Depot, and yes, Wal-Mart. So to answer your question, I would understand what you meant by "the Wal-Mart in Astoria." However, I might feel the need to correct you by saying "you mean Warrenton?" The trouble with this, however, is that Warrenton is not terribly well-known, even in Oregon outside those who travel through Clatsop County regularly. So I'll give you a pass on this.
@TheMarthaStewart

Too long DeLong! The answer is yes. To the statement "Meet me at the Walmart in Astoria." (dumb sarcastic voice). From an Oregonian.
