In this video, I show you how to remove corroded, stuck valve stem caps from your vehicle. This happens when you put aluminum valve caps on a brass valve stem. We get these off and I will show you how.

There should be a class action suit against the companies that sell these things. How absolutely stupid to make something that ceases on so much you can't removed them by hand. How crazy to make something that takes something we all take for granted and make it so you can't access your valve stem to put air in your tire. How crazy is it that you could be on a trip somewhere, thousands of miles from home and have to pay someone to remove your valve step caps because you need to put air in your tires. Absolutely crazy.

Yep. One of mine is completely fused on and I was just quoted $220 from the tire shop to remove it. All over a $9 set of valve caps from Amazon.

Mine were put in by the dealer or chevy plant. 320$ to have them fixed. It’s a 2019 impala only driven by me. Bought in 2020. I’m 75 and not able to fix this with a limited budget. I have always gone to the dealership to have air put in my tires. I did live in Michigan but now Texas. What do people who are disabled or old do? So many of us elderly can’t find help. It just makes me so sad. This just happened today. Going on a trip and wanted to get the car checked and ready. Hubby just died so everything is up to me.

Agreed! This is ridiculous! I finally started trying to take one off...I cut too deep and started hitting the brass valve itself... the top of the cap ripped off as I was twisting it. I'm gonna take a look at the company I bought this from to see if they have a warning on them about these aluminum caps welding onto the valves! This is beyond ridiculous! 😡😤😡😤😡🤬😠😡😤😡😠🤬

I was all set to blame the caps but, as it happens, the caps were brass as advertised but the valve stems were aluminium with a brass-coloured coating to make them look like brass. I'm going to discuss this with the tyre fitters as they supplied the stems about 12 months ago. It was a hell of a job as the caps and stems were so solid I had to grind every cap off entirely and pick the fragments that were still in the bottom of the threads out with a scalpel - quite a long job that required me to take the wheels off to get them in the workshop.

Thank you - your video certainly helped, and persuaded me that I did not need to go to an expensive tyre (tire) shop! I bought an Afantti Mini Rotary Tool Electric Corded Multi Micro Sander Grinder Drill from Amazon (£21); the grinder worked perfectly and very quickly; once the brass of the valve stem started to be exposed, the caps unscrewed easily (one pair pliers on the valve stem, the other to unscrew the cap, as per your video). Btw, I have no connection with or commercial interest in either Amazon or Afantti. Hope all of this helps.

Very helpful video. I got the exactly same problem and solved it with this suggestion, successfully. Four tires, it would take about 10 minutes for each tire. One tip: to cut the caps until the brass valve stem shows up. A little bit of cuting on the stem would not hurt anything.

I got a hyundai this last summer. The tire pressure was low. The manufacture added these god for saken caps. Now it seems like a big mess. The companies should be paying for the replacement cost snd labor involved in fixing this. Cheap manufactures should get slapped with lawsuits. I am elderly on a fixed income. Let's face it nothing is made to last anymore.

I guess I got lucky, after seeing this, I tapped on the top of the aluminum valve cap with a hammer, applied the vice at the top of the stem near the cap like you showed, and used a 10mm socket and ratchet on the valve cap itself. Which I guess was lucky enough again that the caps were hexagon style. Worked great. Thanks for getting me most of the way there. Might have also helped that those aluminum caps were only on for 3 months. Ottawa, Canada.

You think I could get away with using two sets of pliers instead of a vice grip? I don’t have vice grips.
@ThePunOne
@ThePunOne 2 жыл бұрын
@@Father_Brother_Son It's gonna be rough. The trick with the vice grips is to get it locked on at the top of the stem/start of the thread just right with just the right pressure without tearing up the rubber around the stem. And if the cap is really good and corroded on to the valve thread, no amount of pressure in the world will help you and you will have to do the dremel cut method as he shows in the video.
@Father_Brother_Son
@Father_Brother_Son 2 жыл бұрын
@@ThePunOne I understand. I’m pretty sure my caps are plastic, though. Not metal. They’re still really stuck on there, though. I even tried putting on gloves and the valve will twist, but not the cap. With them being plastic, you think that will make pliers more feasible?
@ThePunOne
@ThePunOne 2 жыл бұрын
@@Father_Brother_Son Yes if indeed plastic caps you should have an easier time then the rest of us. Keep in mind you want to pinch right at the top where the thread starts so as not to rip up the rubber around the stem which would just slip and slide anyway. And no doubt you will be throwing away those plastic caps when you are done. And likely easier with the wheels off the car on a horizontal surface if you can.
@Father_Brother_Son
@Father_Brother_Son 2 жыл бұрын
@@ThePunOne Good to know! I’ll see about removing the tires to make it easier and try not to screw up the valves. Thanks a lot! Hopefully I can still save the caps despite the pliers! Lol. God bless!

There's about a 50/50 chance, at best, of success in doing this. But there aren't many options either. Once the caps are seized up, they're usually not going anywhere. The concern here, and again, it's worth a try, is the entire stem just cracking off. They are incredibly fragile, especially the TPMS stems.
