In 2019, Decision Games published a political game called Bleeding Kansas. It is a two player game covering the struggle (both political and violent) to control Kansas before the Civil War. It looks similar to this game in that it has a small mounted map, colored cubes, and cards.

Ah thanks. I vaguely remember wanting to keep an eye out for that.

I'd love to see a 4 or 3-player game on the Election of 1860. In which, Abraham Lincoln won with less than 40% of the popular vote.

It seems, on the face of it, to be a reasonably structured 'game'...but is it actually a simulation of the 1824 election? Why should Adams have the ability to score much during a game in the South? As you said, the designer himself says it's not intended as a simulation. From a personal standpoint, buying a game on the election of 1824, I'm interested in learning the history of the election and how the history model works. I don't see how you can praise it as a simulation, while admitting the candidates in the game are equally 'polymorphous'..kind of like in Bull Moose where you have a fifth 'temperance' candidate who can play, but, in historical terms scored less than 2% of the popular vote. Even Debs, who got 6% didn't score a single elector. As a preference, I'd prefer a realistic simulation, otherwise, it's just a nice looking slick Euro-Election game, isn't it?

It's a simulation of the electoral system itself, without regard to the actors. Much like Mr. President, Candidate, or (to a lesser extent) Road to the White House. And, it's the only such that I've seen take the machinations of an election thrown to the house into consideration. Something that feels strangely relevant again. The initial positioning does inhibit players from taking ahistorical paths somewhat. But (as you'll see in the play), it's not entirely capable of doing so.

The term is 'market system'

Seems an odd choice, because it's not a pure supply & demand basis.

@@calandale I know, but I heard the term watching some of Hollandspiele's videos and reading their blog. I think they referenced Pax Porfiriana as the game that introduced the concept.

It certainly isn't. Small World's predecessor Vinci (from the 90's) had it. Not sure if that was the first though.
