In this episode, I start my journey through Nigeria and I'm on my way to Abuja to sort out a visa for Cameroon. On the way, I pass many, many checkpoints - and you never know what the response will be, or who is trying to stop you on the road. So I try to keep riding, but sometimes, I have to stop..
Want to learn how to use drones, GoPros and 360 cameras to film your solo motorcycle adventure? Check out: www.itchyboots.com/academy

I lived and worked in a small town in Nigeria from 1979-81, and rode a motorcycle to get around and also travel around the country. "What did you bring me?" is like a common greeting. I asked my Nigerian friends how to answer it, and they said to laugh it off as Noraly did, or respond with a joke, or say "Next time." Everyone who goes from point A to point B gets asked that, not just white women! And obviously people can't be carrying around gifts for every single person they meet, especially on a motorcycle. Nigerian culture is very "in your face" and extroverted compared to other countries in West Africa, which I also visited. I had to get used to it, but it was a relief to return to my introverted side when I left.

When I worked in Nigeria I learned to keep a $20 in my pocket and hide the rest of my money. That way when the inevitable demand for “gratuity” came from the police or other government official, I could plead that the $20 was all I had. It happened a lot. Those stereotypes don’t come from nowhere.

You are brave for this. As a Nigerian American , I went to Nigeria this summer. I traveled from Lagos to Ilorin by car and the amount of corrupt police officers that we had to bribe was unbelievable. The road conditions are also really bad and driving is really rough and dangerous as only locals can really drive in nigeria so you’re really brave for this.

Don't worry. The UK police do it too. Here in Britain, they don't expicitly ask you for money for themselves, like we saw in this video, but they try to find something with which they can "fine you" with - any excuse to claim you are "breaking the law' so that they can collect revenue from people. And, it's not just police - traffic wardens, environmental enforcement officers, council workers, etc. do this also. Corrupt people are everywhere across the face of our beautiful earth.

Nigeria was my favourite country (for it's people) on my UK to Cape Town trip. Lovely people and very welcoming, if a little tiresome at times. The corruption is a pain, but its the same everywhere in west Africa. Whilst the constant police stops wear you down, they are there to keep you safe ultimately. I had the exact same experience at Abuja International Airport after arrival. An official (lady) at the final security check just before the airport's exit confiscated my suitcase and said "Give me something". When I told her I don't understand, she said again, "Give me something, anything", and refused to release my suitcase until I complied. All of this happened right in front of several heavily armed security officers (maybe military), all of them heard this, but none of them interjected, even when I protested. Apparently this is perfectly normal in Nigeria.

When I told my friend about the experience, he told me that they were all in it together. @@DrDingus It's a longer story as I was also held up for about 2 hours by a guy in passport control who confiscated my passport to solicit a bribe. I refused and when they changed shifts, the next passport control officer took my passport out from under the counter where the previous guy put it, stamped it, and let me through. It was a business trip and I was concerned that the shuttle sent by the company to pick me up would leave without me. My phone couldn't connect to the local network so I couldn't call. So I did what I had to to get out of there. It was a gaunlet of bribe solicitation to get through that airport. Risking your life unnecessarily for a YT channel is ridiculous, everyone knows life is cheap in some of these places. It wouldn't be the first time and it wont be the last when people like her have just "disappeared".... no need to just volunteer to be another statistic...

@@tada2508 Don't worry Roma people have similar problems, but sadly its deep ingrained in their culture, and the "gypsy way of making money". Force prostitution, kidnappings, corruption and stealing. Stereotypes don't fall out of the sky. God forbid you're a darker skin indian or black person, they'll throw slurs left and right at you, thinking they're superior while dressed in raggidy clothes. Of course, this is the city romanis, the countryside living ones have a different culture and are usually honest and hardworking, and are at conflict with the ones living in the city.

I'm going to comment on this video not as a mere spectator, but as a traveling motorcyclist currently on his way to Cape Town from France, 20 years after completing his first tour of Africa on a m motorcycle. I'm in an African capital where, a few months ago, a friend of mine managed to obtain a Nigerian visa without any problems. I was able to speak with the consul, who was very friendly but told me that there was nothing he could do for me because the problem was, and I quote, "out of my control". ... well, the gentleman is a consul after all. That means he's probably received instructions... But why such a change ... what could have happened since ... um, a polemic perhaps? Something to upset the Nigerian authorities? But what on earth could it be ....? yes, yes, I'm just guessing... Well, I'm going to analyse these images a little further. Cops asking for money... it's commonplace in Africa. So on the one hand, yes, this kind of image can help put an end to it... but let's not kid ourselves: only for tourists, not for locals. What's more, these images resulted in the dismissal of the police officers involved. I confess that this bothers me for 3 reasons: 1/ If you look at these images, the demand for money is good-natured. No intimidation, nothing; I've seen much worse sometimes. And these people didn't deserve such treatment. Real bad cops would have made you turn off your camera, and you know it. 2/ These policemen were undoubtedly family support... what about the consequences for their families. It's a serious matter and your responsibility is engaged. 3/ This could lead to a tightening of visa requirements, which could have an impact on other travelers... All this for what? A video? Sorry. As a traveler I don't approve.
