Cory may very well be the best keyboard player alive right now, but it has nothing to do with religion. He has obviously worked his butt off for many years. There is no proof of god, and we should really be separating religion from these discussions.

+Mercer Shavelson I doubt since the original has a simplicity to it that is unquestionably amazing and what makes it what it is. I don't find Cory Henry necessarily destroyed the song as some of my strict Jazz colleagues think and one of them, an amazing saxophone player, stated that he even found this to be a mess of rubbish and an insult to the original piece. I was shocked since I found his version with his ideas to be cool to a degree using the song as his playground, but that's who Cory Henry is. His music isn't near as complicated as the music of Bill Evans, but Bill would only put his crazy ideas onto his own compositions and not a composition of another, since he would never truly change the changes of another composer into crazy degrees as Cory did quite several times here where it's not even the piece Yesterday anymore, but him fiddling around with some references to the changes and melody of Yesterday. I do not know if he planned to play Yesterday, or it just came to him out of feeling to be referenced from fiddling around, but I wouldn't consider this to be an actual interpretation of the piece Yesterday in my honest opinion. This however doesn't make it less great, for I find the kid's fiddling to be quite unique and recognizable.

Sean Donnelly People are allowed to see things as they see it. I (and as well as my colleagues) find that Barry Harris is where it's at. The real Jazz; the true Jazz; the beautiful Jazz; the Jazz that moves. Not post-Miles Davis confusing anti-music of which so many people worship like monkeys. I would have to play with Cory and judge the cat for myself. I would like if this cat would go study with Barry to gain a solid understanding about harmonies where they come from and where they can move to. I'm very skeptical about Cory's playing being the end-all be-all. Like 4:23 to 4:30, 7:30 to 7:40 or etc. where returns to the original changes. Done very awkwardly, and thus you can say subjectively say if it's either wrong or right, but the truth is that it does sound awkward, unwelcoming, and random. He doesn't go full circle. There were better substitutes that could've made this movement just beautiful. However, Cory was in the moment and expressed it the way he did. You can argue saying that perhaps doing huge leaps and awkward harmony movements is what he wanted to express? I doubt he was thinking that, but instead was just expressing as he did with harmony tricks (aka big chords that don't resolve). There's a way to make it sound good from not resolving though, such as a deceptive cadence or using the chord scale at hand, but I would have to have a little chit chat with Cory to see where he stands. Overall great player technically and he has huge potential to make his harmony movements sublime. Barry is where it's at. Bud Powell is where it's at, etc. I can go on. Here's just my constructive criticism, have my colleagues and friends corrupted or have they made me understand? Your choice.
