JPaul Music First of all, listen to their EPs, a lot of their best work on there. But if you wanna hear Cory Wong you should listen to The Beautiful Game, and if you like that then maybe check out Mr. Finish Line. And if you like those, you can listen to The Thrill Of The Arts (no Cory Wong on this one, though). Hope this helps

I remember being a 16 year old and locking myself in my room for 6-8 hours a day for weeks to practice funk style guitar playing . It really took me a while to get a hang of it, the whole getting used to only letting the notes/strings you want to play sound while you're strumming the whole thing constantly and separating the left and right hand rhythmically, but i got so proud when i did. It's really versatile and you can do a lot of fun stuff in that style.

It's nice to see someone playing like this. Looks like he's angling the pick the opposite direction that most people do, instead of leaning towards the bridge "\" as a traditional right-handed player does; the pick attacks the strings like "/" (I've been told it's essentially lefty-style picking angle on a righty setup). Which really lends to the fast-strumming and funky Strat-style he's got. I also do this, it's extremely hard for me to play funk rhythms and feel loose if I try it the other way.

I’ve been trying to play this type of funk rhythm for the last few weeks, after decades of ‘other genres,’ and I’m constantly surprised at how challenging this stuff is. It looks simple, because of the repetition and there aren’t lightning fast solo bits. But the right hand “motor” and syncopation with the left hand muting all those strings…. Difficult. I’m even having problems just holding onto the pick. Trying a dozen different picks, and even bought little gripper adhesive thingies to help, but I’m not there yet. Not yet..
@TriteNight1218
@TriteNight1218 Жыл бұрын
Haha…I know the struggle man. I’ve messed around with funk guitar for a while now, but I’m nowhere near Cory Wong’s level. I’ve been using Dava Grip Tip picks for funk rhythm (I believe Cory uses the same pick) and I put adhesive grips on the pick as well which really helps a lot. It’s difficult to get a consistent attack across the strings with both up and down strokes. To help with hitting notes on the right beat, I’ve found that practicing accents on different beats seems to help. Reverb actually posted a video of Cory Wong’s practice routine where he talks about this.

Could you do an episode of Riffs in the key of Johhny Marr? That would be great.

Hello Reverb, i have one question, is that a 68 Vibrolux Cory is playing through and is that his go to amp or did he use it just for this video because you had it around. Thank you very much.

The Vibrolux lives in our studio. We'll have to ask Cory about his amp preferences next time he drops in. :)

I could tell this guy was a drummer that probably played on a drum line almost from the moment he started playing in this video. Great stuff.
