The Cosmere is just amazing, but man, nothing has ever given me the same feeling as finishing The Ways of Kings and Words of Radiance. I love them both nearly equally. My most fav character sazed is from Mistborn but my fav. "just barely" story is Stormlight with Kaladin just as close to being my fav character. The end of Mistborn era 1 still gives me chills Stormlight gives me that feeling more often. I find it really odd but I have finished each one of Sanderson's books at least 8 times even more and I'm getting more chocked up/ emotional to these stories and im like "WHYYYY??" lol Its to the point that I'm actually afraid to see it in live action with people around me.

With Elantris being the first novel in the Cosmere, Mistborn being the blockbuster, and Stormlight Archive being ... well ... the Stormlight Archive, I feel Warbreaker often gets forgotten. And indeed, I wasn't looking forward to it, as I really REALLY wanted to start the Way of Kings. But it is very nearly my favourite. I love the characters, the magic system is nuts, it is lower stakes than Mistborn or Stormlight, and the concept of gods having a physical presence in the world is very interesting. Also, it introduces my favourite talking sword.

This was such a great video! I got into the Cosmere during my second year of grad school, started with the Way of Kings not actually realizing who Brandon Sanderson was at the time. I quickly realized what I had stumbled upon and became obsessed! His worlds were so fascinating and I loved how specific and borderline scientific he got with his magic systems. As a biology grad student, this really excited me since you rarely see stuff like that in fantasy. If you want to do another Cosmere deepdive video, I would love to see a Cosmere timeline. Given that you're reading Wheel of Time I'd say go for it. Stormlight is fantastic, and if you like big books (WoT) and trust Brandon to make good stories (finishing WoT) it's a decent place to start. A note about reading order: as long as you read books in the same series in order you're fine. It's cool seeing connections to other books you've read, but it works both ways. You can go straight through, or if you need a breather you can try Warbreaker (good standalone with cool connections) or The Emperor's Soul (excellent standalone novella)
@ramenpower8097
@ramenpower8097 Жыл бұрын
@@OtherTheDave I’ve heard people say this before. I’m much more interested in the Stormlight Archive than Mistborn though. Do you recommend this because Mistborn ties directly into Stormlight Archive, or is that Mistborn is just easier to get into? If it’s the latter, I think I’ll be fine, since at this point I am used to large complex fantasy stories.

@@ramenpower8097 i’m gonna give advice not many here agree with but. Mistborn let me down tremendously. i too read WoT for first time this year, and immediately went to cosmere. Mistborn has such a YA feel with terrible dialogue, i was very surprised considering how people talk about it. Personally i’d try mistborn because it may not bother you, but if the writing does bother you, go straight to stormlight. stormlight is MUCH better imo.

@@ramenpower8097 they are both really good series but they don't tie into each other from what I remember. But I will agree with the other guy that stormlight is a much better book than mistborn. For the upcoming projects did you include the 3 out of 4 secret projects that are set in the cosmere?
@PixelAmp

There are people that are avoiding any and all spoilers that have to do with secret projects, so they're generally left out of these lists. Once they're released it'll be open season, but until then even the titles are considered spoilers to some.

For anyone wondering, while it says 3,460,000, it's because it doesn't count white sands, if you add up all the word counts together of his cosmere works, you get 3,665,534 for a very exact number. Subtract 200,000 from the total to not count white sands and you get 3,465,534 which is ~6000 more words than what it says there meaning you could basically not count one of the short stories and still get a similar word count.

I’m only a little more than half way though the Cosmere and I’m loving it. The Cosmere community is fantastic and I can’t wait to get through the rest so I can listen to more podcasts and look at fan art without spoilers! PS your RAFO shirt is awesome. I definitely need one!

The whole cosmere is breathtaking. Absolute masterpieces each and every one (that I have read). I do favor the stormlight archives above the rest of the cosmere since The way of kings has shaped fundamentals in my personality and oathbringer pulled me through religious struggles. Absolutely best books out there. Thank you Brandon Sanderson!

I'm really digging these breakdowns. I was wondering if you were considering doing the Dark Tower Universe at some point. I know that's a massive task considering how much of Kings work is tied into the Tower but that'd be an amazing Breakdown

Thanks for this. I've had the Mistborn trilogy and Elantris (as well as Shadows of Alloy I think) sitting on my shelf since I started wanting to dive into fantasy in March but I haven't gotten around to reading them. I've already committed to Sanderson's kickstarter so I know I want to read all the Cosmere stuff, but it can get overwhelming, having this run down helps. Also, unrelated, but I just checked out your merch for the first time (I usually watch videos in the background and my pea sized ADHD brain can't remember to look at it when I get a chance if I don't do it immediately) and MY GOSH man! You're going to make me go broke! I already have your books - again ADHD has had them sitting on my shelf unread, but I like what I've skimmed - but I love the designs of everything on your website, and the price at least on paper is significantly better than other creator merch. I'm out of a job right now, but whenever I find anotehr one I know the first thing I'm spending money on.

I discovered the Cosmere just this year as I got back into reading during a very difficult time in my life. I recently just finished Rhythm of War a few weeks ago, and I don't know where I'd be without these books. Sanderson has created a form adventurous escapism unlike anything I've ever experiences. I'm so incredibly thankful for Sanderson, the team at Dragonsteel, and his books.

Out of curiosity, how did you feel about Rhythm of War (both objectively and in comparison to other Stormlight books)? I know it's somewhat controversial in the community (or at least on BookTube; the overall ratings on Goodreads seem in line with other Stormlight books).

@@Vashurz I loved it. Especially Kaladin's arc. Although, the amount of fabrial exploration and experiments was a bit excessive and quite boring at times. Because of that large portion of the book, the pacing was a little iffy. Other than that, it was fantastic. And extremely painful. I loved many of the character dynamics, and some of the action scenes are the best Sanderson has written in my opinion. It's my 3rd favorite Stormlight book at the moment.

Shadows for Silence is so awesome. I think it’s so unique and the main character is a very different archetype than you normally get in fantasy.

This is a great video to have right now. I'm currently waiting to read The Way of Kings again, since it's coming out this week in Brazil, and then continue my readings with Arcanum Unbounded and The Lost Metal (as soon as it comes out). PS: I'm reading the books in publication order, so, no short stories in between yet...

As a Shardcaster this isn't what I expected for this video at all, but I can definitely see why having a solid idea of what conforms the Cosmere is good for new fans. Also, you did miss mentioning the essays in Arcanum Unbounded, which aren't published anywhere else.
