I was asked by Chris Hawkins to make two thirty minute mixes exploring the theme of nature and well being for BBC Radio 6 Music. This is the first of the two. It is a sonic exploration of oceans.
www.bbc.co.uk/...
We listen to humpback whales singing, sperm whales clicking, weddell seals and bearded seals courting, coral reefs spluttering, bucktoothed parrot fish crunching, shrimp snapping, long horned sculpins honking, blue whales lamenting and haddock drumming. All of the music is composed entirely out of recordings of these animals and the sound worlds that they inhabit.

Oh wow, this is so beautiful... I think of a lonely fisherman in his small boat, nothing in sight but dark water and mist; a comforting silence surrounds him, until suddenly he starts hearing a tune play from... underneath the surface of the water! He looks down from the edge of his small boat and sees flickering lights. The music gets louder. Entranced, the fisherman stares at the party that seems to be going on in the depths of the ocean. He realizes at once that he wants nothing more than just to jump into the freezing water and reach the lights and hear the music forever. He takes a moment to look around on his boat, to breathe the air, to say goodbye to this world. Then, he leans further over the edge of the boat and lets himself fall. He sinks and sinks, and as he does the music gets louder, and the lights brighter. He is where he belongs. Finally.

First, bird places, and now oceans? You know what, I have also been fascinated with oceans, especially when it comes to whales (and other cetaceans). Basically, there are many similarities between birds and whales other than both of them being amniotes (for example, their vocal ranges) and also many differences too which make some of their things complete opposite (like their metabolism). Now this is making me feel like I am in Crimea (along with the Black Sea, though whales don't really live here), the Adriatic Sea (and other parts of Mediterranean too somewhat), the Arctic Ocean, Pacific Ocean, Atlantic Ocean, Antarctica (Mainly when it also is coming with the Weddell's seals), and whatsoever, other oceans at the same time! There are many extraordinary and whimsical things that seem mystical in the nature world, especially when it comes to oceans. Also, my birthday in next year is at the same month and day as World Whale day! I am so happy about this and I am planning on designing more bird-cetacean hybrids like for example, the hybrid of a snow bunting and beluga whale. Thank you very much for those things nature has to offer while you feel your deep connection with nature by making music with their sounds, I really want to compose music like your music from nature in the future! Best wishes from a Ukrainian-Pakistani living in UAE! (^,^)

This was an experience..... I layed down in darkness to listen to this and see how my imagination would interpret it, and here’s what I saw: At the beginning we are presented with various creatures, lurking in the bottom of the waters. All creating unique sounds as they flourish on the ocean floor. Fish, snails, crabs, sea slugs, sea snakes, hundreds of creatures yet to be discovered by man. As we travel through the blue forgetfulness, a lonely dolphin, or a creature of similar being sends out its echolocation click, as it navigates to scavenge for pray. In the distance, it detects a rattle. A weird nearly mechanical noise that’s just audible for a small second ( 10:10 ) It believes the sound was a crab, or a crayfish. But little do they know the real source of this noise. Knowing to be curious by nature, the mammal follows the sound. The creature freezes at a moment and concentrates, hearing in the far distance the warning signs of their kind. The yelps of their family as it runs away from a threat, as it pursuits them slowly. ( 11:25 ) A final scream is auditable, (likely given out by the creature themselves or a member of their swarm) right before the threat is presented to our creatures eyes. A ship, larger than the horizon, is right above. It’s sides cutting through the waves. People, humans, machines, engines, fire all in a rhythm so unnaturally on beat that no one in the right mind will believe that this creation is not ‘manmade’. It can only be exactly that - Manmade ( 12:04 ) The ocean stays silent as all that can hear, and see and sense freeze in awe. The ship is too far away to hurt our creature, but their eyes are fixed and their confusion intensifies. The ocean has no answers to the sudden appearance of the metal behemoth. All who spend their whole lives under the waves is silent as they realise that what they have just witnessed us non other than a pure anomaly. A creature never to have been discovered before by the ocean inhabitants. ( 13:39 ) ( 15:01) a group of fish, questioning and communicating on what they have just witnessed. Our creature and it’s siblings begin their scornful wail as they question what is waiting for them in the future ( 17:44 ) A motor boat. Stoping in it’s place and letting down it’s anchor. The ocean is silent once again as it studies what it sees. This metal whale is smaller than the previous, still they have no idea if it opposes any danger. ( 20:00) the ocean discusses what it has seen yet again. ( 21:00 ) dull faraway gunfire. Quiet cries as bodies of whales are rumoured to be dragged onto the metal behemoths. Our creature is still sending out clicks. Terrified of the rummers of war, it strands its self from the pack. Still in search of food and shelter it swims away to shore. ( 24:00 ) Our creature is stranded on the beach. The noises of waves suggesting cold water is washing on its thick skin as it relieves hopeless cries. It cries and begs for mercy. Begs the world to save its soul but knowing that the chances are scares. It thinks of how free the waters were, of its swarm of brothers and sisters. They thought of the metal behemoths and of how quickly they got stranded without even being able to notice the way the water was getting shallow. The ocean morns the loss and it’s inability to get our creature out of this trap. When it’s final heap of air is exhaled from their lungs, struggling fatally under the weight of their body, a silence persists. The waves keep crashing towards them, a rain begins as their body is beginning to reabsorb into the souls of the beach. Maybe I looked into this too deeply, but this was what I made of it. Not gonna lie I was nearly in tears by the end of this artwork and it shows how incredible Cosmo is with his work. I’ve been a massive fan ever since 40k followers and listening to this was a blessing. I feel like with each song I can write a whole essay and that is what makes this so truly beautiful.

your music is some of my favorite, i really love creative music that gives a mysterious vibe and that it break the normal popular way of music, i wish to be the same in my work whichever it may be, i do love to write but i love all types of art. in anyway i can express not only myself but the feelings inside me. in a non normal way. i’ve learned that i’m good with my words but i need more. words don’t always go straight to the soul and give you the feeling that is being expressed. which is way music is so popular, it is a way to feel in inside you and it thrives if you seem to have a similar way to yourself. luckily we are all different though, and i wish everyone could do this. it’s like a soul connection in a way. anyways thanks so much for your music, it inspires me!
