The Cossacks were Russian military horsemen who saw themselves as Orthodox Christian warriors, in voluntary service to the tsar. Repressed after the Bolshevik Revolution, since the collapse of the Soviet Union they have re-emerged and are trying to revive Cossack traditions. Ilya Okhotnikov served in Russia's special forces and comes from a long line of Cossacks. When he retired he moved out of the city and started building a traditional Cossack settlement where he is trying to continue the Cossack way of life.

My father and he died in 1984 aged 75 saw Cossack riders in New Zealand possible before WWII and he was a horseman. He was amazed just ordinary horses no special gear and riders doing amazing tricks. My dad could do some. Pull me up from the ground and throw me behind him on a galloping horse but jump off seeing round the neck of the horse and back up on it's back. I agree up listening to his tales. Said the cossack was the greatest horsemen he had seen. There was a harmony between the rider and his horse.

My dad and mom were Cossack riders in West Germany in the '50s. I like your story; dad could pick up a handkerchief on the ground running a full gallop. When we were riding when I was a kid a horse that no one could control my dad would get on it suddenly it was a different horse and would obey every command.

Horse saddle: Circassian Sword: He said “Shashka” and shashka's mean is sword in Circassian language. Hood: it is already clear what Many things in their culture were stolen from the Circassians. During the Russian-Circassian war, the Cossacks could not defeat the Circassian horsemen. So they stole their war techniques. Circassians defeated the Russians for 101 years. In the end, the people had no strength to endure and the Circassian people were subjected to genocide. In the war, 1.300.000 Circassian killed. In the exile , 600.000-1.000.000 Circassiane losed their lives. Don't forget the Circassian Genocide...

Theres no such thing as a russian cossack no such thing as a ukrainian cossacks.Cossacks are Cossacks. They originated around the Polish-Lithuanian commonwealth. They are Slavs. Just like Poles , Ukrainian and Russians. Giving them an extra nationality is done by nationalists or pretend cossacks who like people to think theyre cool. Its funny how cossacks were always fighting for independence or respect first in the Polish Lithuanian commonwealth and then against the tsardom. All of those countries didnt treat them as equals, and now every body is fight over which modern should get the glory for the name cossack and forever be associated with the culture of those fearless warriors. They almost like the vikings, people think theyre so badass they become obsessed and claim to be norwegian. A new type of weaboo has been born.

theodore grapsas theodore grapsas actually they originated in southern Ukraine fighting against the polish Lithuanian commonwealth (mainly the "slavery that was done by the poles) after... they began to fight the Russian Empire eventually during the reign of Peter The Great, Ukrainian Cossacks (men fighting for "THEIR" freedom) died down due to the constant raids by Peter and later by his wife, some Russians adopted the Cossack ways or defected and became what you explain as Russian Cossacks.... but originally Cossacks are more closely related to Ukrainians or even Tatars fighting against Polish and eventually Russian oppression.

Let's stop confusing History.. Who was What...or What Race is Who...etc. Let's look at the facts. The Cossacks wherever they come from, Were/Are...very importantly Greek Orthodox Christians.. and thereforeHad/Have no connection with Roman Catholic Poland and Polish ruled Western Ukraine, nor the Turco/Tartars in the South of what become "Novorussia". as such they have always been associated withRussia!! for obvious reasons. Yes sometimes being Cossacks they even fought Russians, but eventuallythey become the "Shock Troops" of the Tsar fighting the enemies of Orthodox Christianity period.so they were and always be associated and considered Part of the Russian Nation and it's History.

It was first mentioned in 1187 after the death of Pereyaslav's Kniaz' Volodymyr Glibovich. Just in Soviet Union and in Russian Empire that word became a meaning of "border between", but between what? No ones knows. So correctly will be to say that the better usage of meaning that ancient words is in a origin way and you all have to check the information. @@Boyar300AV глупости не говорите! Казаки древняя нация! Однако, чтобы не платить по счетам, экс-коммунисты не признают казаков как народ ни в России, не на Украине. В США, казаки входят в перечень непризнанных народов с 1949 года.

"The Cossack" is turkish word. The Russians - is not nation. but the lot of mixed slavonic, finnish and turkish (tatar) peoples who lived at territory controlled by vikings tribe RUS (Rurik Dynastie) and Russia - is name of territory of Ruriks.

Turkish people called them so, but it doesnt mean that Cossaks arent russians (or slavic). Its like a name of Scythians: greeks called them so, but they called themselves Skoloty, which is clear slavic word

A slight misunderstanding: Ukraine was the term used by the Cossacks in the 17th Century to refer to the steppes they were fighting for. Their territory Zaporozhiya was situated on the edge of the Russian Empire and the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth. The term remained, but Ukraine never had permanent independence before 1991. The population of Ukraine descends from a mix of Rusyns and Cossacks, not mentioning the other Nordic, Baltic, and Germanic blood, and Polish influence.
