So why would you want to reduce your bike’s weight? With a lighter bike you’re going to get more acceleration out of every horsepower, better stopping performance out of your brakes, and even quicker steering and better gas mileage. Saving weight can get expensive, so we’ve outlined a few free options as well as some mods that are especially cost-effective. Watch, enjoy, and lighten up!
--
Lightening your motorcycle is going to improve all aspects of its performance. With a lighter bike you're going to get more acceleration out of every horsepower, better stopping performance out of your brakes, and even quicker steering, and better gas mileage. You'll have to hack a lot of weight to notice a considerable difference, but every little bit helps.
Cutting Weight On The Cheap
Cutting weight is kind of like adding horsepower in that it can get expensive very quickly. Fortunately, there’s some stuff you can do that won’t cost you a penny. For starters, you can unscrew those steel feelers on your footpegs, and if you don’t ride with a significant other you can remove your passenger pegs, too. If you’re not much of a night rider unscrewing the reflectors from the fork and rear fender will cut ounces from the extremities of your bike, and you could ditch your tool kit and tire-plug kit, but this is MC Garage, so I’d never recommend riding without your tools.
Okay, with the $free.99 stuff out of the way, you’ll have to start spending money. Luckily, there are some pretty cost-effective mods that either have a great price-to-pound ratio or they offer additional benefits on top of saving weight.
Spending Money To Lose Weight
Far and away the best bang for your buck will be swapping out your stock, old-tech lead-acid battery for a modern, lightweight lithium-ion option like those available through Shorai. Depending on your bike and the size of the battery you could be looking at weight savings of 75 percent. There’s no bling factor with a Shorai since it’s hidden under your seat and they are fairly expensive compared to lead-acid cells, but you’re simply not going to find a better value in terms of pounds per dollar.
The next best move is to throw your heavy, huge stock exhaust in the recycling and slap on an aftermarket pipe. Switching to a performance exhaust will not only slice pounds off the side of your bike, but it’s also got the added benefit of improving the look and sound of your motorcycle, too. If your bike’s catalytic converter is in the muffler then a slip-on is going to be the easiest and most affordable thing to do, but if the cat is further upstream you’ll likely need to invest in a full system to realize maximum weight savings. And if you do that, make sure you’re remapping your bike’s fueling to match your new exhaust.
Another recommendation is to change out your stock steel sprocket for a sprocket made from aluminum. Aluminum parts are going to weigh about half as much as their steel counterparts, and replacing the sprocket also gives you the opportunity to change your gearing for more acceleration or higher top speed.
Aluminum is softer than steel so you’re not going to get nearly as many miles out of the lighter option, but an aluminum sprocket is still a valuable mod because this weight is rotating and unsprung, meaning it’s not supported by the suspension, so it’s the most important weight to reduce in terms of performance.
Finally, the last way you can shed some weight off your bike is by shedding some weight on yourself. Whether this means being more active and increasing the amount of exercise you do, or reigning in what you eat, the cheapest way to lighten your bike is to lose some bodyweight.

You joke, but this is literally what helps me keep fit! I know there's people out there that like to get up early and run before work and eat funky tasting leaves, but I don't. My natural state is pretty much a panda, if pandas liked pizza. I've lost about 15kg (roughly 30 american units) since I started riding. It's all about the pressure of not looking like a gorilla in leathers, and factoring in that I've spent hundreds of dollars reducing weight on the bike that are usually saving less weight than having a large dump before your ride lol Only thing I can't do here is delete the cat. I guess the laws are different where this is filmed, but here if they hear a loud exhaust, they not only decibel check you they can emissions test you and that's expensive

For me, losing 10% of my body weight, going from a 530 to a 520 chain/sprockets, and going to a Delkevic exhaust made my 919 feel a lot faster. Losing the weight on the rider was probably the most effective one - something I need to do several more times. Thanks Ari!

Filip Lenz definitely. If your goal is only to be fast on a bike around a track, then you can afford to get lighter, but maybe you want to still be strong for other activities, so there’s a definite limit to how much you can lose. Even looking at MotoGP riders, Rossi looks very skinny compared to Marquez and Pedrosa because he has such a height difference, but he has to make sure he’s strong enough to ride the bike, and whatever he enjoys doing after racing too ;)

I did a build project with my cousin and we got his 2019 GSX-R1000R from a 203kg (447.5lbs) curb weight to a 189kg (416.7lbs) curb weight. That's a 14kg (30.9lbs) weight reduction on an already lightweight superbike! We got carbon fiber Rotobox Boost wheels, Antigravity li-ion battery, Evolution Line Akrapovic full exhaust (which also gave it 10hp more + ECU flash), Racefasteners titanium bolts, Motocomposites 100% carbon fiber parts (chain guard, inner dash panels, under tank panels, oil cooler surround, radiator shrouds and center tail piece), CRG carbon clutch and brake levers, CRG Hindsight Lanesplitter bar end mirror, R&G tail tidy, Supersprox countershaft and Stealth sprocket (aluminum core with steel teeth), RK GB525GXW chain and we removed the passenger foot-pegs, the reflectors and the footpeg feelers. Total cost around $6k.

Some say is create back pressure and then more tourqe. Others is just for noise reduction. So many different opinions. If is only becouse noice why it been used for so long time ago. Regulations wasnt that strict back then. If is increase low rpm tourq why every full exhaust system eliminates them. Just so confusing. Like to change for a full exhaust. TheJeevers nothing. You can make it harder to steal for the opportunist and easier to recover, but as long as a bike is light enough for 2-4 people to lift and small enough to put in a van or on a trailer, it’ll never truly be anti theft.

So I have been looking at ways to make it saver to park it here but I would like mc garage to sum it all up because I may have miss something. For example is chaining to the wall enough? they would need a grinder to steal it then, or are there more ways that I have missed? TheJeevers I’m in a city too. It kinda sucks. Really, we need things that’ll make loads of noise for them to try removing. So yeah, something that’ll take an angle grinder rather than bolt cutters is a good start. Make sure what you chain it to is good too. I like my oxford disc lock too as a deterrent. It’s definitely better than those brake lever clamp locks on Facebook that can be thwarted with a screwdriver and unbolting the brake lever! I saw a few European motovloggers testing out monimoto, which looks like a cheap and technically interesting “smart alarm”. But it looks like it’s only available in Europe. Good for you! Bad for me. Also, I wonder if there’s a parking/garage place near you, I put my bike in one when it’s too snowy to ride or when I’m away, but there are people that love a couple of train stops from there that keep them there year round and have 24/7 access.

I think that having a lower weight is more important for ADV bikes. Lithium battery + new muffler saved almost 10 kg in my case. I can appreciate the difference now, mainly because those weights was located in a high position on the bike. Also, for ADV bikes, it is important to move down weights as much as possible, for better handling in offroad (e.g. the tools and small baggage). I'm still wondering why manufactures are producing large front light projectors even if they are located so high. The one from the GS 1200 has even a small ventilator inside 8(

As a specific example I reduced the weight of my Street Twin by 14 pounds replacing the CAT with X-pipe and installing my own slip ons. There is an old drag racing adage among bikers that 7 pounds equals 1 HP, can't say it is true. Unsprung weight is valid and reducing that is an important consideration, and with sprocket and chain lighter also means a faster spin up as well as a weight reduction. however all that other stuff is mostly psychological, you would be better off losing 5 pounds and improving your riding skills.

I have a little off topic question, I recently test rode a 2016 triumph street triple (w/SC project conic pipe ) I was shocked how jerky it was , especially off the line. The throttle response was totally not what I was expecting. Can I assume that it's because previous owner just put a slip on and called it a day ...and also can I assume all those "issues " can be solved by putting back a stock exhaust ? I'd appreciate any advice, thanks

You can always chop a leg (CBS does the trick for rear brake) , an ear and some fingers. Also, we all know that we do not need all our teeth , so high time we made a dollar out of it right ? :D Seriously though, battery, exhaust, wheels and maybe a thinner saddle are the safest bets for modern bikes just as Ari mentioned. For older ones, one can replace heavy single lights, metal speedo and tacho maybe even mudguards and flash lights.

What’s the rule about replacing the chain & front sprocket once a rear aluminum sprocket wears out? Obviously it’s going to wear out much quicker than the front sprocket/chain, but once the rear sprocket is worn, has it also done premature damage to the chain/front sprocket, which would necessitate their replacement as well, or do you just keep replacing rear aluminum sprockets until the chain/front sprocket are finally out of spec. Thanks

If you want to remove those bulky and unattractive reflectors, but still want the safety of night-time visibility...just use some reflective tape! You can get some in the bicycle area at Wal-Mart or in the paint supplies area at most hardware stores like Home Depot, etc.And you can even find some Manufacturer Decals -- like Pirelli Tires -- that are done on reflective material.. And the NUMBER ONE Way -- which you failed to mention (-; -- is...(drum roll) ... GO ON A DIET!! HA HA !! MOST of us could stand to LOSE 10 pounds or {much} more of 'spare tire' that would provide a LOT of benefits beyond just being a lighter load on our bikes! Like having more Endurance for those all-day long Track Days, or days in the mountains or canyons playing Chase with our friends, and smoother airflow over our backs as we tuck in for those top speeds on the straight-aways...

From the cost-benefit ratio, replacing the battery is the most effective way to save weight. The lead battery of my 2010 CBR1000RR weighs 3.3 kg. The lithium battery for the Fireblade weighs only 800 g. 2.5 kg weight saving for less than $ 100.
