Omggg, you’re my spirit animal. I’m 26 and I live in Elephant & Castle, so pretty central but my spending is super low like yours. I live with my parents fortunately so ‘rent’ is only £300, transport for me is about £75, groceries is around £125 (but I’m very careful and mindful, I couldn’t imagine spending over £200 😭), eating out is my biggest category at around £100-£150. Outside of that, I spend nothing. Just in the phase of saving money and fortunately, I’ve managed to find like minded chill friends where we do cheap food dates, activities and go for hikes. We don’t spend lots! So if you’re looking for a friend, heyy girlll 👋🏾💖

I'm leaving London after 7 years - it's become so much more expensive in the past few years and unless you're on 40k + it's really tricky to live. It's great hearing from another Canadian, I was shocked coming to Europe because you're right our phone plans are ridiculously expensive for no reason. I get more GBs of data for much less in Europe. I have almost 100 GB a month for little under 20 euro, whereas the same would probably cost me a $100 or more in Canada. I never bought a monthly pass for transportation in Canada because I had a car which I miss sooooo much. It's funny that you're from Montreal because I've been contemplating moving either there or to England recently. I'm from Toronto. I used to use the Mint app to budget in Canada (does this work in the UK) and since I didn't pay rent as an owner, the most I spent was on groceries which has become ridiculously expensive. In France, I spend maybe around 30-40 euro a week. Depends on what I'm making because I meal prep. I'm nervous about paying rent for the first time because I know that's where most of my cheques are going. How did you find your place? Which sites would you recommend using? Montreal is a lot cheaper than Toronto, so I get why you think that's a ridiculous price. But even if you convert that to CAD that's over a $1000 for one room. Your total isn't bad, if you were making minimum say 3000 CAD (which I think is the mim wage amount if you earn $20/hr) you'd be able to save like 1400 a month to put into your savings. Not bad. But I heard jobs don't pay that well over there.

Your expenditure is good for London. I'm amazed you only spend £97 on public transport a month. My tip would be (if you're a confident cyclist) buy a decent peddle bike and cycle to work. Also, you can explore different places like Richmond Park or Hampstead Heath. This will be an existing way to stay fit and you can cancel your gym membership! Greenwich Park has so much interesting history. During the 2012 London Olympics it held the Horse Jumping event!

For London, that seems more then reasonable. But your shared amount in rent also includes amenities? WiFi, electric, council tax etc?

£640 for rent in Greenwich is not too bad I think. I used to pay £600 in Leyton living with more people back in 2021.

£97 in a month for public transport in London is excellent. I live in Zone 4 & pay around £240 per month on public transport.

My mortgage alone in London is £1400pm!

It’s funny, I’d say you need to make at least £100k to live a comfortable life in London. But I suppose it depends what you mean by a comfortable life. I’m 30 based in Greenwich and I pay over £1600 a month for a one bed flat (not a flat share). Then I pay about £700 a month for mortgage on a property outside of London, which I’ve been trying to sell (so I can buy in London). I don’t feel remotely comfortable.

in the US $1300 is the cheapest you'll get for a one bedroom alone not to mention other bills that just for an apartment

I live in California and $1,300 is usually the cost of rent alone I’m honestly shocked at how cheap it is over there.

Food; Groceries- definitely spend less than me lol. I'm not sure if maybe my calculations off but I got that $1180 -$1200 for USD. Which is pretty normal for the city I live in in the states, I feel your lifestyle is definitely cheaper compared to Canada.

How you found out a place to live about these prices? Do you have any tips for that? And would be great if you can suggest some websites, apps etc. to rent a room for a student.
