It would depend on the visa you hold. However, from my understanding, most car companies are now offering a car loan even to a holder of a work visas. All you need to do is, you visit any of them, and express your intent to avail car loans. You will need to bring your passport or drivers licence for them to check your background, as well as for them--to process your loan. And if upon verification that your character/credit is good & you can be trusted with paying the loan, you can right away walk with the car on the same day. I hope th this helps.

But since I would like to impart my knowledge in approaching things that I was constrained to answer the comments here to help others understand how life must be lived in an entirely new world/surroundings. Well, Budgeting is something that you should be able to handle well, especially if only one in your family will be working. You need to consider the bills that you have to pay--weekly rent, monthly water and electric bills, internet, petrol, fares (if you will be using public transport--you need to have a hop card to be able to travel cheaper rather than paying in cash, which is expensive), expenses for food, etc. Anyway, all the best.

You can perhaps negotiate with the owner or agent. But that thing is personal to you, & burdensome for the real owner of the rented property to undertake. I doubt if that is even feasible, imo.

Car payments would entirely depend on your choice, whether you want it payed longer than the terms that were being offered to you or you want it shortened to save you from paying interest on the loan, & also, that would entirely depend on your capability to pay. In my case, when I bought my car, I was being offered 3 years to pay it with a minimum of weekly payment of $50. As I don't want longer payment terms because of the interest, plus I felt that I couldn't breath, so I payed $200 weekly. And in a matter of one year, I wiped out my car loan. But that's just me & that's how I handle my finances.

And, for the groceries that would also depend on what your needs are. In our case, we are a family of three, we could spend $300 fornightly, and these amount would not suffice to complete what we need in our household. And we could still spend a couple of dollars before the next grocery day.

@@theavenzfamily3884 mahirap ba? In my case, I was not able to convert my Philippines' driver licence when I arrived. So, I started from the scratch. I took a theory test for a learner licence to enable me to drive in NZ. I got a perfect score of 35/35. One fails the theory test if one only scores 32. But as easy as it is to pass a theory test, it is different though, when you apply this theory into practice/on the road. And with a learners licence, you will not be allowed to drive on your own. It's a requirement that a supervisor seats with you whenever you drive. And for me to gain confidence on the road, I enrolled at a driving school for one session at $75/hr, now increased to $80. It's nerve wracking initially, to drive in NZ roads, however, if you get familiarised with the rules on the road (road code), you will be able to safely manoeuvre the roads, and you will eventually, develop some driving skills. Plus, you also need God's protection because some drivers do not observe the road code. And to convert your learners licence into restricted, you need to choose the area where you want to take the practical driving test. You need to practice in that route and be familiarised with it, to pass the test with ease and confidence. And so, goes for a full licence, which I now hold.
