Remember you have to move on every 2 weeks if on a canal without a private mooring . A marina costs a fortune every month . Lots of other costs and realities as well . Carrying shopping on board in pouring rain on a canal side turned to pure mud by mountain bikers using the paths . Also getting used to living in a smartie tube doesn't suit everyone . If you have a job you cant move far and parking is a problem unless in a marina . Gave it a go for 2 years but a lot of things that are not mentioned that change the image of the life style . Gorgeous morning! Love the photos/videos. My gosh you are smart about costs and options for heat and other power. Yes, she was "born". :-) A wood boat is born for sure since the wood is/was living. Best explanation of "chine" I've ever heard. Oh, engine maintenance is absolutely necessary. I'm a retired diesel/gas engine mechanic boat/car/truck. The cost of a breakdown is way more than the cost of preventive maintenance. Good on you! I hope everyone listens to you. I sewed up covers for my caravan roof, and the two largest windows, still allowing two other windows to let light in, and still allowing access to my door. Yes, thermals, red caps, two showers a week, etc. 🙂 Life is grand.

Ps an Aga is very different from a raeburn even though it's the same company. Aga is fed from the top via a 3 inch hole so logs won't fit

I spent 4 months at my mate and his wife who had a waterside lodge in zooch in Nottinghamshire and all the narrowboat people were happy and smiling living the dream I would so consider the life keep up the channell its amazing

I always like your vids, im uming and aring about getting back on the water, 25 years ago when there were less boaters, free seasoned wood was easy to find, coal and gas were cheap, moorings were a fraction of current costs, we didnt have mob phones, tablets, tv or internet, it was great! The costs you shared show a huge, dramatic even, increase! As someone considering retiring onto the canal system its a worry, but do-able. For us oldies a marina is a better option, if you fancied a project to compare marina costs across the country i would love to see that vid! I also support Sea Shepherd btw been a diver most of my life. I wish you well May ❤

Regarding Internet..... I purchased a very expensive Wi-Fi aerial and a router with SIM.. Turned out to be a waste of money you don't need them ..my phone acting as a Wi-Fi hotspot works better than the router and the aerial.... you have to pick your spots you can't expect to have Wi-Fi everywhere you go... it depends which window you put it in as well the left hand side of the boat can be better than the right on side of the boat.... Coal prices are absolutely stupid this year I've just managed to buy 8 bagsx20kg for £100 which was a 40 pounds saving which I would have been charged if I went to the Marina near where I was stopping. luckily a fellow boater told me about this place which was only a mile away.... FY I summer of 2001 the same coal was £8 per bag.. It would be worth learning how to do your own engine service the labour charges at some of these marinas is a complete rip off.... Buy spare parts when you can for instance I have just bought 4 injectors for a very reasonable price just in case I need them things are only gonna get more expensive... When it comes to blacking do it yourself if you can paint a wall you can paint a boat.... For all you new boaters don't get ripped off...... I learn my lesson very quickly...

I've been mulling this over since a visit to Diglis Dock many, many years ago. I've watched loads of videos on the subject of narrowboat life and should really have taken the plunge by now. One omission I noticed by May is insurance premiums and levels of cover. That's important in case anything out of your control happens. Having said that, thank you May, your presentation here is a good aspect show of narrowboat living. Merry Christmas to you, and all boaters out there.

When you live on a narrow boat you might as well put a slot in the top of it for the constant maintenance. Plus dont forget the boat safely certificate every couple of years . Your canal licence fees all the things like batteries that need changing every so often to including your leisure batteries. Inverters always break down so get a much bigger one than you actually need because anything less than 2500watt ones burn out like no tomorrow. Sump pumps bilge pumps . Water pumps always break down no matter what make . The electrics need an annual going over to stay on top of any electrical problems. Keep your engine well serviced to. Make sure you grease up and wad the prop shaft .important after every single time you move the boat. As they always let in water. Once every few months clean out the water tank. Make sure you paint and treat all the wood in your boat . To stop it rotting. Because boats rot from the inside out. It's a lot of work but a fantastic way to live.

Very honest appraisal - its not "cheap" as such, more of a lifestyle choice I guess and, as you say, a little less secure than a house....... but houses have their issues too and often far more expensive to fix than a boat.

I've been 18 years on board now. This winter is 1st time I'm genuinely concerned about costs. They're coming for all of us.

I have thought about doing this for so long, I know I wont do it.. This is not a negative, just a reality. What watching this has done has just helped remind me how expensive boating can be. I hope to find my end house at the sea and have a little tender boat, to sail/motor, or sit reading in it. I completely appreciate why you do it and love following you.

It's interesting that you have the same diesel tax differences as we do here in the US. Lower tax for utility and agricultural use.

FYI, we spent $6,000 on varnishing our log house, bought a new washer and dryer and dish washer this year so houses are no bed of roses either.

Your boat is 3 years younger than me... which just goes to show that the 40's are not that bad. We need a bit more maintenance, is all. 🙂 Thank you for making these videos, at the moment I can't buy myself a boat and try that lifestyle, but I will - hopefully within the next 5 to 10 years (if all the canals haven't evaporated by then).
