@Adam...This is indeed sad. To have lived such a life in the world of entertainment as the adopted son of legendary Sammy Davis, Jr., to end up working at a low level job with Costco. But this is not entirely unbelievable. Like champion ice skater Debi Thomas, who, too, fell on hard times, Sammy, in my opinion based on many years of observation, might've had difficulty with his own identity. Mind you, I was a fan and still am. But I sort of gathered Sammy felt consciously or the reverse that his black heritage was a hinderance to the identity he wanted. It was in the way Sammy sang, for example. The enunciation was always done in such a way as to mask or even deny a black identity. That when he sang, he didn't want to go "to the back of the bus, as it were." Then, too, I think there was the Latino influence in his family that led away into an identity crunch. In short, because this is a large and much wider subject, Sammy really, deep down was partially rejecting of his black heritage which may have led to a dysfunctional lifestyle which left him broke, barefoot, and starry eyed. I saw that same "index," if you will, in champion skater Debi Thomas, who obviously had more of a Caucasian identification than black. Her speech delivery was telling, not to mention her atypical black upbringing in a predominantly white and very conservative Bay Area environment.
