Hello Friends! This week I decided to take some beautiful silky, satin material that i have had in my stash for a while and create a dressing robe with it. I was nervous about making such a large garment with such a squidgy material, but it turned out great. I think this project would be awesome for people who wanted to make bridal/bridesmaid robes, or even just some really beautiful lounge wear!

I'm sewing a robe for my friend's birthday party. Everyone will be dressed up and the theme is the ocean, which means that i bought a beautiful ocean waves print that i am in love with. I used the buttonholer ion my mom’s old Domestic many times. It allows a straight stitch machine to pretend zigzag by clamping the fabric, kind of like a very specialized walking foot. You are limited to the cams that come with it, and it’s rather terrifying and noisy, but the buttonholes are perfection. As a little kid I was fascinated by the kerchunk-clack kerchunk-clack.

Buttonholer in the green plastic case is most likely to fit your featherweight … unless it accidentally got switched and the wrong size is in the case. What you need is a buttonhole attachment for a low shank machine. Go through all your metal cams and save one each of all the different sizes and types before getting rid of all the others. Most buttonholers were manufactured by greist and the cams are interchangeable.

Your robe is so pretty! I am recovering from emergency gallbladder surgery. I am doing well otherwise. For 10 years, I thought the almost daily pain was panic attacks. Lol, I was very wrong. I've been listening and watching to a ton of long form content, mostly historical documentaries from Germany. I've been catching up on clothing repairs and general maintenance. In the next few days, I plan on cleaning and oiling my machine, changing the needle, and prepping my patterns for the next batch of fabric that will arrive this week. I'm finally joining the AD wrap cape club!

I NEVER thought of starching my squidgy fabric. DERP. That's awesome! And the robe turned out great, and I LOVE those colors! As far as what I'm up to... I've not been watching anything, but my latest novel is at almost 64K words and I think it's going to hit 75-80K because it's romantic fantasy/mystery/suspense and wrapping up all the plot points and explaining red herrings is a THING. Other than that I have been re-reading Thieve's World when I've had the available brain cells for it. Anxiously awaiting Deadpool and Wolverine as well as Red One. I'm currently sewing a zero-waste halter dress based on the instructions from Threads Magazine from a few years back. My version is truly zero-waste; I drafted the pattern on old packing paper, got the fabric (gauzy mercerized cotton) from a friend's yard sale after she had gotten it from a thrift store, substituted recycled buttons for the zipper, and I'm doing the whole thing by hand (because my sewing machine runs warm and we've had triple-digit temperatures here all month). And I'm probably going to re-watch Severance again because I still haven't figured out how to cancel my 🍏 subscription.

Hey, you looked more energetic in this vid-hope that’s how you felt! I _love_ that robe. The pattern and colors are soooo beautiful. Fantastic idea with the starch, a technique I will keep in mind. ❤️ If you’re here in New England, _I’m sorry_ you had to deal with the humidity!!! It’s _horrible!!_ I hope you didn’t suffer it. My canvas bag with leather straps was ripping. Took it apart. Made a pattern. Bought nice fabric, piping, good needles. Then put it all aside to rip apart my bedroom to put laminate down, redo the ceiling, remake the closet. Ugh. Currently sitting on my pull-out bed in the living room watching your vids, lol. _Buuuuut_ the great news is that my bitey foster fail cat _FINALLY_ found a toy he’ll play with: the leather straps. He can chew on these to his fuzzy hearts content. So win! Except, now I need to figure out what I’m going to do for straps when I remake the bag. Lol.

Seeing that fabric gave me flashbacks to the silk habotai that I used as lining in my wool coat, which was my first sewing project in 10-ish years. 🤣Why must slinky fabric be so comfortable and easy to care for! I'm glad that you're getting to go visit a friend. Friends, and especially being around them in-person, is vital for everybody but even more so when you've been sick/depressed/isolated. I've bought a few books in the last couple of weeks. 18th Century embroidery is what I'm currently reading, but also a book on blackwork embroidery, American pirates, The Cut of Women's Clothes, one on Mucha, and two editions on Kansas tornadoes (I wanted to see what the difference was. It's very little). Eventually I want to recreate the blue frock coat shown in the 2023 spring Cora Ginsburg publication, so I splurged and bought some silk duchesse in a similar color that was on sale. When will I get to it/be brave enough to attempt it? Who knows! 😅

The box of rotary feet most likely goes with machines made in the late '40s and early '50s from a sewing machine company called White that did white label production for Kenmore and new home. These are typically machines that don't have a belt, instead they have a rubber wheel that presses up against the big wheel on the side of the machine (I don't remember what it is called). The feet clamp on to the bottom of the (another thing I don't remember what it's called) instead of the side. If you go down the rabbit hole of collecting vintage sewing machines, as I have, the rotary top clamping machines are delightful.

Lovely project. Very swooshy. I prefer the button holes that are made by button hole attachments. I own several machines that have a variety of built in / automatic button hole stitches but keep my 1955 featherweight permanently set up for buttonholes with a singer attachment. They are consistent and even. I stitch around twice for the best finish.

1. looks beautiful and swishy and love it! 2. i don't think it needs a belt at all. i think it is much better as an open robe. if you did want the option to close it, some sort of gold-tone closure buckle thing would be really cool. 3. have fun with morgan and travel safe! 4. and i'm so sorry you have to go to a funeral. may their memory be for a blessing. I'm glad you like the robe. It's lovely and gorgeous colors! I'm also glad you're getting to visit Morgan. Have lots of fun! Coping with long term illness bs is hard. You're doing well, taking it day by day. Don't feel badly when your body goes 'f you, I'm not giving you energy today!' because it's not your fault. Chronic illness just is like that. I'm still working on getting that through my own head. It's hard to do. Today, I hopefully had the last treatment for bedbugs (inspection next week) and I forgot to take my headphones with me when I had to leave my apartment, so I was out for 3-4ish hours without them and I don't do well, anxiety wise, when I forget either my headphones or phone. I got my Summer Reading Challenge book. I chose Vera Wong's Unsolicited Advice for Murderers. I read the first paragraph and it looks like fun (so does the blurb). 'tany rate, have fun, take it easy and be kind to yourself (like Mr Rogers would say).

I use a 1958 Singer and the green buttonholer case you have looks the same shape as the buttonholer that came with my machine; though my case is red. I use it when making button holes with no problem. I also have an attachment for zig-zag stitch because my machine only does straight stitch. So make sure you keep a zig-zag attachment if your antique Singer need one.

Excited for you to visit friends; I just got to hang with a friend for the first time in a while due to Life Things. But we went to a gallery to check out an exhibit about art nouveau artist Alphonse Mucha. Very very interesting and stunning art. Also, yes it's so dang cold here (australia), it's been very rainy but finally getting some sun back so I might actually go sit at the park and read. I'm currently reading Elisabeth Wheatley's series, I've just been binging through so many books as I got the kobo subscription when I ran out of complete series from my libraries' digital catelogue. ebooks have been a game changer for me; I've read 54 books this year so far. Turns out if I don't have to hurt my hands holding the book, or deal with returning books to the library physically, I can just blast through them. :D

I made a robe like this for my partner and he absolutely loves it. I drafted the pattern off his measurements based on the variety of videos and blogs out there from OFMD and prior. I ended up making the side seams straight instead of angled, which created large rectangle scraps rather than triangles. I then joined those to the front of the robe like an oversized collar, and small sections of it to the sleeves to lengthen those as the width of the fabric was close but not quite enough for his long arms. It did cause some headaches figuring out construction (particularly because I followed whims instead of instructions lol), but I essentially just made the outer robe then lining robe, attached the long rectangles along the front edge that would normally join the two; turning at the hem (I'm incredibly proud how i got the cuffs to join but couldn't explain what I did if I tried). But the result of the extra fabric along the front means the robe has a really deep front to wrap around him without a lot of fabric to the sides which balanced better for him; plus accidental tartan jedi robe vibes in the end. haha. it's been a big winner this winter for him, as I made it with flannelette outer and printed cotton lining, so it's slippery on the inside but warm still. Even the first month of wearing it I hadn't finished the bottom hem properly so he could give feedback (his first experience with robe beyond the knee so it was important for trip hazard :3 ), but it's all done now and I am super proud of it.

The robe looks great without a tie. It's lovely. It's hot here with the humidex it's actually gotten over 40C approx 104F. It's been a weird up and down below and above normal temps. For my car ac fixed and it wasn't the hole unit! So celebrating that. I'm sorry to hear that you've lost someone. It's a hard time even when people you haven't seen in years are there. I really think as families we should make more of an effort to have happy gatherings and reunions! We had a loss a few months ago and the people who were divided after the great Facebook was of 2010 didn't show up. Which is a loss to out family as a whole. Families are complicated! Just re-listened to Nalini Singh phy-changlin series the new one is coming out this month! I'm so ready! Not watching anything but I think I have to figure out how to podcast cause the things the British stoled sounds very interesting! Now I have to remember to ask a kid! Just because fabric is on sale doesn't mean you need more fabric. There will be another sale, with equally amazing fabric and equally amazing prices. Your time and space have value as much as fabric does. If you do not need more fabric, and there's a sale, you always have to consider if the sale is good enough that it makes up for the time of you finding space in your home and budget for what you are about to buy. Project-wise, I'm working on the question "Do I have enough small cuts in my stash to make a circle skirt dress with sleeves?". The bodice is done. The 15 piece panel skirt is on panel 11 and 12 out of 14. Ideally, I will finish this in the next 11 hours... except I've been working on this since April and I decided to do quilted patchwork in a specific pattern on each panel. But I definitely have more than enough fabric.
@Costuming_Drama
@Costuming_Drama 20 күн бұрын
Nope, silk is extremely difficult to find these days, and mills are closing, even in China, and at $10 a yard, that’s absolutely worth it. If this fabric is on that much of a sale, it means I need more fabric.

I love it! Honestly, I would just put a toggle and loop to close it if you want it closed. It doesn’t need a belt. And you will be less likely to lose a loop closure. The squigginess of that fabric would make a belt closure not very effective, I think.

It is cold but not too bad but I am from the Deep South of NZ so I am used to much more Antarctic weather. We currently have days at 12°C sometimes they start at -2°C but most days it's fine. Good luck! (It’s easy). I absolutely LOVE the robe, and I really enjoyed your video. I recently took out my fabric stash, and covered my dining room table with it, and started sewing! So far, I have made 3 pairs of shorts and 2 tops, and I’m just getting started. A summer robe is what I am thinking of making next. I was wondering where you got the robe pattern?
