We tend to think of blindness as something you're born with, but with certain genetic diseases, it can actually develop when you’re a kid, or even when you’re an adult. But could blind eyes possibly regenerate? David Davila explains how the zebrafish’s amazing regenerative retinas are causing scientists to investigate that very question.
Lesson by David Davila, animation by Eli Enigenburg.

My best friend has Retinitis Pigmentosa. He is only 14 but will be totally blind in 2 years. He loves this video and from what he could see with 25% of his vision, he loved it! He said thank you to all the people who helped make this video and are continuing research! He hopes to see them some day.

I had a macula off retinal detachment in my right eye. I noticed a shadow slowly encroaching towards my center of vision. I sought medical attention but thanks to good old American Heath care (or lack there of) it was too late to save the fine detail vision of my macula. After a corrective pars plana vitrectomy my vision was mostly restored, just one more surgery to go.

+taylor1038 Hey! I have had a retinal detachment cause of sports, but I didn't do anything about it for two years. The upper part of my vision is gone. What is corrective pars plana vitrectomy? What do they do? I actually have a cataract surgery coming up soon cause of the gas and oil bubble they put into my eye. I have had 4 eye surgeries in the past year. It would be great to get that part of my vision back.

Ive had zebrafish in aquariums before, one of my first lost one of its eyes before i got him and still managed to be the cutest thing and then one of my last managed to survive MONTHS in a tank that wasn’t being taken care of. No filter not heater no water changes, zebrafish are hardy and very unique fish that need more recognition AND have helped us a lot in research also they’re as cute as those animations!

I think the Muller cells are activated by transcription factors-like signals from retina, these signals go on to induce specialization in areas of muller cell (gradient based). These specialized cells then replace the cells or truncated cells, which is what we see as regeneration. I think.

Can other parts of the eye be transplanted after death like our retinas?Or just the cornea? I've met a person that was blind before because of cornea damage, and before he told me that,I did a dark joke about eyes, blindness or corneas(I don't remember the joke anymore,it was one of those that depend of the context of the conversation I was having in that time) to him that creeply enough,he confirmed that was what exactly happened to him.He had a corneal transplant and started to see once again, since then,I wondered if it's possible to transplant other eye parts, not only with cornea.

What about Macular Degeneration? That's what took my grandfather's sight. :-( We all watched his slowly go blind over a course if 17 years. It started when he was 64 and ruined his retirement. He also had glaucoma and other eye problems that i don't remember the names to.

I have lost most of my vision in one eye and it might be starting into the other from Glaucoma and I am currently only 39. Regeneration should help Macular Degeneration and it is further along than Glaucoma for treatments. Currently one Treatment is in Phase 2 clinical trials. Glaucoma is still at the pre clinical trial stage. But in 15 years I think both will have treatments to bring back at least partial site. My eyes are starting to stabilize so I might have functional sight until that day.

Although we share a common ancestor with the zebra fish it's likely that they did not have that trait even though most of the eye probably was very similar. The trait would have been much more widespread with a lot more species having it. I wonder why zebrafish has this. Their ancestors must have had a harsh time surviving such that this trait was vital for their survival at one time.
