There's anime out there telling almost identical story. Aegis destroyer goes to 1942, but the crew decides to not intervene, and at one point even turns on the Japanese forces, while trying to broker peace between the nations.

All of these time travel scenarios seem to play out the same way: "Q: Does small amount of modern tech beat large amount of old tech? A: Yes, overwhelmingly, it wins easily at long range where the old tech can't even respond. But then it runs out of ammo/fuel/spare parts and can't do anything anymore,, so its overall impact on the war is limited" I'd be more interested to see one where either: A) the modern tech wins completely and changes the course of the war or B) the modern tech is actually useless (eg, a radar jammer is of no use against an enemy that doesn't have radar)

It's the exact plot of a Japanese anime/manga series, called 「Zipang」, except the destroyer in the series is a fictional Yukinami class guided missile destroyer, based on the Kongo class with a hangar for helicopters.

The submarine USS Nautilus DID have a meaningful impact on the battle. A Japanese destroyer was hunting for it, lost it, and gave up and went back at high speed to the main fleet. A US Navy pilot saw the wake from the ship, and flew in the direction it was going. It found the carriers and bombed them.

I think the idea is from the Anime titled, Zipang.

A japanes manga called Zipang actually revolved around this hypothesis, basically a Japanese SDF destroyer went back in time to just after Wid-way.

It would have been funny and awesome if Binkov included the music from Zipang. That show is hidden gem.

There's a film called, the final countdown, which instead of the modern Japanese destroyer here, it's an American aircraft carrier The aircraft carrier was teleported to Dec 7, 1941, pearl harbor Hawaii where two f-14 engaged the Japanese zeroes & almost prevented the outcome of the war

Interesting, I question the crew engaging in actions supporting the Japanese ships. I think if this was from the German perspective, it wouldn't be save the Bizmark, it would be kill Hitler.

This HAS to be in response to seeing the anime Zipang, where the JS Mirai does a Final Countdown and shows up on the eve of Operation MI. THEY DO NOTHING. They do sink the USS Wasp later, but in self-defense. And the manga ends sorta weird. Oh yeah, some bad guys end up with a nuke but they foil that plan. Ha, and the ending IS like The Final Countdown.

I know this is purely theoretical but I'm pretty sure AEGIS and the missiles 'using coordinates provided by the helicopter' would use GPS satellites and communications that don't exist in WW2. It's actually possible that thing is largely useless except it's radar and communications.

One-way aircraft raids to defend Midway seem unlikely, as US planners would almost certainly sacrifice Midway in favor of conserving forces for Hawaii and west coast defense. Agree that strategic effect is to prolong the war but not change the ultimate outcome, as US industrial capacity was just too great. US would sooner or later figure out that the advanced radar capability exists on only one Japanese ship, and plan strikes in areas where that ship was not.

This would make a good premise for a movie, - a reverse Final Countdown. The Destroyer crew would face a moral conundrum on whether to support their country, or destroy their future and their closest Ally.

All good until the ship breaks. Since modern ships basically have no armor and depend on their systems for defense, once one of those systems goes down and there are no parts or infrastructure to fix it, the ship is pretty much a sitting duck.

The main benefit of a modern warship to a historical fleet is sensors. It's that simple. Ammunition runs out, and air attacks back then were based on dozens or hundreds of planes. Modern warships are, generally, flimsier than old fashioned stuff with real armor. But this thing has sensors out the ying yang. There would be no surprising it with 1940s tech.

After watching the movie "The Final Countdown, " where a modern US Carrier traveled back in time. I imagined an alternative where a modern Japanese Carrier, went back in time to the battle of Midway.

A question i have is how would a 1918 army do agaisnt a 1915 army? Take the 1914 German army at his full strength and have it fight agaisnt the American or French army of 1918. It would be an interesting way of showing just how far war evolved during those years, from near napoleonic to close to modern warfare

Actually what this shows is the advantage NATO intelligence gives Ukraine to the point they're currently fighting at near parity with Russia, despite disparity in materiel.

Ya, the strategic awareness that a modern destroyer would provide would easily turn the tables if properly utilized. It was already a near run things ... so ya it would make a huge difference.

This is a concept covered in a really good anti war anime called Zipang Highly recommend, it deals with the morality of using weapons with such such a massive tech gap

Hey I've seen an anime of this before.

The problem with any of these modern weapons and aircraft it's lack of GPS. The helicopter in thus case would have trouble even knowing where it is let some vector a strike. Reporting to the general vicinity of the ships would require a navigator teaching and plotting. There is none on a blackhawk. The missiles would be fired over yonder and best. They have small seeker radars but they have a limited view.

And we are just ignoring that 5 inch gun on the Haguro smacking planes out of the air left and right at some 24km out?

The greatest difficulty in utilizing the modern destroyer would be communicating it's high powered observations to the rest of the fleet to act upon. The fact that Japan was operating under radio silence makes this even worse. The best senario is for the Destroyer to become the flagship so the Japanese commander can directly access all that info and directly control the most powerful asset they have.

Most modern japanese destroyer is the Izumo class. Its a helicopter destroyer. Ot can carry like 24 F35Bs.

We need a final countdown and Zipang remake

Someone (I forget who, it wasn't a channel I normally watch) recently did a video simulating a modern US cruiser against the entire Japanese fleet at Midway. The simulation was very poorly set up and made some very bad assumptions, and the cruiser lost badly. If you do it as a thought experiment instead, it seems probable, assuming you start the engagement just after the Japanese Midway strike had launched (i.e. just after 0430), that the cruiser would easily win. It's just as well here that you didn't bother with any simulator and just did it purely as a thought experiment. It is notable that one single US sub had an extraordinarily decisive impact on the battle - the Nautilus. Its attack on the Kirishima caused the Japanese to detach the Arashi to track it down, and as the Arashi was rejoining the main fleet, McClusky's dive bomber squadron, who had completely missed the Japanese task force, spotted the destroyer and followed it back to the main fleet, allowing it to execute its dive bomb run that sank two Japanese carriers. If the Nautilus hadn't drawn off the Arashi, McClusky would never have found the Japanese carriers, and the battle would have gone extremely differently. Of course, in this scenario, McClusky's squadron, and all the rest, probably never launch at all, so in that sense the subs become unimportant. They might still try to engage and attack, but given the quality of modern anti-sub warfare (equipment, weapons, training), they would likely have no real chance. So yes, on the whole, I agree with your assessment that a single modern Japanese destroyer would completely flip the outcome of the battle.
