Plate armour was extremely effective at stopping arrows and bolts from crossbows. Blunt weapons were best as a big hit to the head still caused a concussion, and could still dent the armour and make it awkward and uncomfortable to move in. You'd have to hit a gap in the armour with an arrow to do anything significant.

Honestly, it would probably depend more on the bullet used… arrows had a hell of a lot more mass than any bullet, which in turn increased the actual force exerted by the projectile, even though it may not move as fast as a bullet, and thus wouldn’t have the same piercing capability relative to something like flesh. But realistically, a 9mm or indeed most pistol rounds may be deflected by certain solid metal armors, depending on the thickness, ductility, etc.

Fun fact: In the year ~1000 AD, China had some primitive guns and needed armor against it because of civil wars, so they designed a type of armor that deflects the pellets and makes it go through different chambers, stopping the pellet (can stop up to a 9mm), then in late Yuan/ early Ming, Japan went to war with China, having inferior firearms, they designed a more modern like samurai armor made to stop pellets (and 9mm). That wasn't real armor, though. Yes, it worked as armor, but that was just repurposed hardened steel from a minecart (if memory serves). It was basically a rough cut thick slab of steel, similar to what you would use when going plinking. Medieval armor was actually made to be pretty thin because you had to cover the whole body with it, and you would die of exhaustion before you died from getting hit in the head with a big stick if your armor was a half inch thick or more all around.

They actually did make breastplates that were able to withstand bullets. In fact, you’ll often find these breastplates with impact from a bullet on them. Arrows penetrate chainmail, yes. (You would have several layers underneath though) But plate armor deflected arrows easily. Since there’s no “flat” area for the arrow to go trough. Joints were vulnerable though but unlikely to get hit by arrows. That’s why they started using cannons and firearms. And even then smaller calibers and bullets were still deflected for a time or didn’t go trough. It’s only after mass production of firearms and increased accuracy that armors were abandoned.

Plate armor stops all arrows and bolts. Plus plate armor can stop pistol caliber bullets. That's why some soviet soldiers in WW2 wore metal breastplate. But rifle bullets shoot right through
@kalkovonschpritzendorf191416 күн бұрын
High power crossbows could pierce even some of the plate armors straight through, but those things had like 6x time power of a very strong bow. Their shape was designed to deflect the projectiles to the side though, so that unless it hits perpendicular to the plate, it had a chance of not piercing. Anything with "normal power" got stopped. However any musket or a flintlock could penetrate plate armor. That's the reason why they phased out of use. They did use plate armor breastplates to stop shrapnel in WW1, but the soldiers hated it. Funny enough, even today soldiers use breastplate - they call it the "plate carrier" these days. As far as I know, it is capable of stopping a rifle round if thick enough.

The helmets were probably not fitted to your size. Furthermore, a full set of plate armour didn't weigh much more than the shit modern soldiers carry (about 25-30 kilos). The armour was fitted to the wearer typically, and plenty of motion is preserved (you can mount horses, jump over fences and do rolls and all sorts of shit)

@elite_rock_god22924 күн бұрын
@@kartoffelschloss6425 look up any accurate test ever made and it disagrees with you. Arrows where a suppressing weapon, shot as many as you can to try to injure someone, lucky if you hot the gaps in the armor but even then arrows rarely actually pierced into flesh or where a killing blow. Some tests shows that even just a gambeson can block arrows at times, depending on draw weight and such
@OceanSea123 күн бұрын
@kartoffelschloss6425 Jesus christ this again. If you have enough archers shooting at something at close range, you're going to kill things. Agincourt was not a normal circumstance, and the archers spent much of their time in the melee.

Yes, @@G_egg173. Cuirassers literally have bullet dents as proof of quality. You only meant modern WW1 guns or more advanced, because many Africans managed to repel gubpowder-based Europeans with just a weak shield and spear during the Colonial era.
@ParkerRyan-bg7ux17 күн бұрын
Once you go into the era where both guns and armor were a thing, armor makers were required to shoot their armor, and the mark was a “bullet proof” (that’s where that came from) so Armor from that period would 100% be able to stop a bullet
@angelmatesmolan17 күн бұрын
It is well documented that since the XVI century armor usage started to decline due to it's ineffectiveness in deflecting bullets and other major changes in war tactics
@archmagosdominusbelisarius883617 күн бұрын

@@angelmatesmolan Common misconception. The actual reason was cost of production and time of training. It's easier and cheaper to instruct a rando to use a gun than a bow or fight on armor, thus this was prioritized because massive numbers often win against small numbers with good equipment up to a point. Armor is actually quite capable of stopping bullets, the Flying Hussars basically soloed every confrontation against firearms with a stomping victory, and even before them there're records of dukes riding with Heavy Plate Armor, receiving 30 shots and coming out unscathed.

They do stop arrows, you could even see videos testing it, plate armor is thick and is supposed to stop many weapons, they only stopped making it when guns appeared, they then invented the cuirass which actually stopped guns back in the time, they were tested, plate armor is very durable, and is very strong, the only way it could be penetrated by arrows is by the small little gaps, which were very hard to shoot at, because plate armor has barely any gaps, and sometimes it could stop bullets like 9mm, and many other weak types, the only “plate” armor that can’t stop arrows are the cosplay non historically accurate ones, and of course ancient armor wouldn’t be able to stop a bullet, but in some cases plate armor has been able to stop bullets, and most knights with plate armor, mostly had a shield with them, that could also stop arrows, this video is probably one of the most biased thing I’ve ever seen about armor, if its able to stop blunt force weapons, and swords, it could easily stop a arrow, because it deflects off of it, even tanks use similar stuff like this, it deflects bullets, and the weirdest part about this animation, is that the plate armor is literally curved, which arrows cannot shoot at, which makes absolutely no sense, imagine shooting a arrow at a metal refrigerator, what would happen? And what else would happened if it was curved, hard and curved armor was way more than enough to stop arrows, and remember that short about plate carriers stopping bullets but still having pain? That’s kinda like plate armor, but it was designed to not make the user feel any, but blunt force only did that, and seeing arrows pierce through rounded objects hurts my brain.
@Ralphotron17 күн бұрын
How ia it biased lmao? Stop projecting your love for ancient weaponry and just accept the bullets would tear through any medievalbera armor
