CTE, or chronic traumatic encephalopathy, is a disease closely associated with American football players due to repetitive hits to the skull. This leads to brain damage over time including, memory loss, aggression, impulse control, and more. Is the solution to this disease helmetless football? The NFL has cut off all funding into CTE research but the A7FL is fully embracing the concept. Leave your comments below and be sure to subscribe.

It's a massive physics experiment. Reduce force by limiting size of players and eliminate helmets (give them nose and mouth guards), and there should be major improvement in head injury risks. Question: since there are no helmets in rugby, what are the head injury stats for that sport?
@cheddar
@cheddar 6 жыл бұрын
A Boston University study found that 96% of the deceased NFL players brains they examined had CTE. Rates are beleived to be much lower in Rugby, however, there is research being done that suggests the sport can also contribute to the condition. Repeated small traumas appear to lead to the condition as well as heavier impacts and concussions. Growing up with rugby league and learning correct tackling technique to avoid head injury, it's unbelievable watching NFL players lead with their head. They think that the helmet protects them so they can use the head to lead into contact. Taking off the helmet will force NFL players to change their technique when entering collisions so they protect their head and stop leading with it.

Have you ever considered that you didn’t hit your “head” on the ground at all. Your helmet hit the ground. No helmet in many cases means no head-contact with the ground at all. Add to this the fact that many kids have been given helmets that are not fitted for them and you’ve now got a rattling head inside a helmet... Nobody gets on a motorcycle with the intention of using their helmet. It’s there for emergency. Give them something that more resembles the old school helmet or what’s used in rugby; something that protects their crown only, the same modern pads, and keep the same rules as they are. Notice: rugby players suffer nowhere near the same amount of concussions.

Before modern helmets, about fifty players/year (at all levels) died of skull fractures. I'm sure many more survived in bad shape. That does not happen anymore. Better to change the paradigm of helmet design. Perhaps have a very thin outer shell (that always cracks) and progressively tougher shells as you get down towards the skull. If the brain just reverberates inside the helmet (and your brain is bathed in cerebrospinal fluid) then your "bell" is getting rung-it's simple harmonic motion. But-if the shell cracks-it bleeds off a lot of force. The Zero G helmet is supposed to be pretty good, too-time will tell.
@alohatigers1199
@alohatigers1199 2 жыл бұрын
That’s because rules have change, especially safety rules. Notice that you never see head to head collision in Rugby, but in the NFL you have guys going head to head because you know you’re protected, basically because you have protection, you’re using it as a battering ram.

@@alohatigers1199you do actually but they're illegal, especially nowadays. Unfortunately many rugby players develop CTE, so much so in fact that two of the largest national rugby union governing bodies are being sued by hundreds of affected players (RFU and the WRU). It's not just about head on collisions, any rattling of the head is enough to cause damage or violent head jerks, which are causing the brain to hit the skull and causing strains and tears to vital brain tissue. Also, in rugby union we have rucks and scrums which can be quite brutal on the head, fortunately those don't exist in American football.

That general concept works fairly well for Rugby. The biggest difference being the lining and up and launching from the line of scrimmage in football. @@cheddar my mind is absolutely blown by the amount of people in this comment section that actually think that not only is this a good idea, but that it’s a new and unique one. You do realize that football was played for DECADES without helmets in the late 1800s/1900s, and they averaged 10-30 deaths per year amongst active college players in the early 1900s before helmets became mandatory? You think going back to that is a good idea? And the average NCAA/NFL players today are WAY bigger, stronger, and faster than back then, which means WAY more force on impact. Using a no-name helmet less league that a small number of random people play in is no comparison to the sample size of athletes in the NCAA/NFL. If the stupidity of this still hasn’t sunk in yet, go look up the story of the first football helmet from one of the early Army-Navy games, and why it was made and worn in the first place. And stop comparing rugby and football- they’re two completely different sports with different rules that result in different levels of contact. And lastly, @chat sports, “a form-fitting protective shell over the forehead and skull”? You literally just described a football helmet.

….no… because the human brain is a solid mass with the comparative consistency and texture of jello, that sits in a fluid completely disconnected from the human skull. It floats. Any sudden sharp jolts or shocks or stops or smashes are disturbing and damaging it in at least some way. What’s more important than just actually trying to make the game safer by changing rules or elements to it, is actually noticing the moment and incident of any concussive jolt to a persons head. Even if it’s incredibly minor and they claim to feel fine. Taking that person away from the game immediately, then giving and allowing the proper time and requirements for rest and recovery. We’re all doing even slight damage to our neural pathways and brain synapses just going about our days in the world. But the major difference is when you’re a fulltime pro athlete, forced to play games and practices day in and day out, your body is never given that time to begin healing any damage. Thereby not only causing more permanent harm but increasing the ongoing severity of the spreading dislodged synapses already spreading dangerous toxins throughout your brain.

@@WBookout10 I agree with what you said. But we do live in a different time. You referred to the point of time and history when they introduced helmets for the sport, but this was still the time of and love for a variety of other spectacle-attended blood sports. That’s not so much the case now. Perhaps our modern sensitivities have enlightened us enough to the point where the removal of the helmet, along with referee-monitored strict enforcement and monitoring of players offence and defensive strategies, may prevent many players from landing and taking these head first blows.

I feel it would take a tremendous amount of financial and activist based backing to get any momentum going for a new league. If you remember, the XFL was featured in a futuristic movie staring Ahnold, but was still dead after one season. I feel a more logical step would be to implement a reform utilizing similar changes to the NFL itself. While I’m a huge advocate for this movement, I feel the major problem is that when you remove helmets from American football, you remove the very symbol of the sport. It’s unfortunate that this symbol is the very cause of such tremendous suffering.

People just need to broaden their horizons and find other sports. Football has always been dangerous, and even when TR was President players were living their final moments on the field. It’s unavoidable. Hockey, Basketball, baseball, soccer, gymnastics, power lifting, swimming, tennis, golf, wrestling, track, bull riding…plenty of sports out there with a much lower risk of a degenerative brain injury

i would like to add why not reseaching any technique from different fields like sumo(grappling and grounding tech), jujitsu(twisting arm tech), soccer(sliding tackle) or any others that teach how to put your opponent to the ground without headbang. in football you basicly need your opponent run aground right? and why no helmet ( i think without helmet there's bigger possibility you could get CTE because less protection to your head right?)

OR, maybe give helmets to just the Quarterbacks so they can retain the image but everyone else gets no helmets.

Maybe consider why helmets exist in the first place- skull injuries. With a helmet you might take more blows to the head but when the big hit inevitably comes you don't get a skull fracture. The future lies in helmet technology rather than removal entirely.

Notice that you never see this in rugby compare to NFL. Wearing helmets means you’re encouraging people to use it as a BATTERING RAM and hit people as hard as you can. You see a lot of those in the nfl. You never see this in rugby because safety is important. That’s the opposite of what a Helmet is intended.

Then make it rugby style. No tackling above the shoulders or nothing above it in general. And have them wrap around or "bear hug"with proper rugby style tackling, add fancy neck stabilizers and still keep all the padding. Boom! Safer football.

That is not true because it will essentially turn into rugby and in rugby many people die because of cracked skulls. and maybe if someone accidentally hits someone full speed in the head they will both most likely die. helmets don't stop concussions but they do stop heads split in two.

rugby head and facial issues are a real thing maybe i was wrong about people dying because of cracked skulls in rugby but people have died from full speed head collisions. and what are you talking about possibly stopping brain injuries? If i hit you hard enough to knock you to the ground and you fall on your head you will most likely not be okay. (Watch this video for evidence that rugby has brutal head hits that will happen to players who play with no helmets.) kzfaq.info/get/bejne/j9h6p9Sg0M2uYac.html

The reason why American football has helmets is because of Theodore Roosevelt and the deathes in the very early 1900s. Helmets prevent sudden catastrophic deaths. If your skull is cracked open, your brain can spill out, and you can bleed out. CTE comes from the brain bouncing around in the skull. Helmets were never instituted to prevent concussion or brain injury but from instances of sudden death on the field which is still very possible.

I've been saying this to my football cronies for years. I have a couple of easy to understand metaphors to help me make my point. 1. If a guy has no gloves while building a barbed wire fence, he will automatically take better precautions. Without even thinking about it he will work safer due to the lack of protection. 2. A fireman will rush into a burning building to save a person's life, knowing he's outfitted with fire resistant clothing. Yes it's his job, but this makes him braver than he should be and many times he will lose not only the person he's trying to save but his own life as well. Overconfidence because of your equipment is a very dangerous place.
