It's almost like no one watched the Amazing Spider-Man films. He did indeed design his webshooters but the silk was sourced from Oscorp. The cartridges were made by Oscorp from genetically altered spiders, one of which, bit Peter. This made a lot more sense in the real world than actually designing synthetic spider silk but I'm a comic book purist (sort of ) so I liked the fact that he did that in Civil War. :D

My favourite moment in Captain America Civil War; when Spider-Man sees the Captain's shield bouncing around and says "That thing doesn't obey the laws of physics at all!"

Well the string has to stick to a concrete/brick wall. The string might survive, but how strong is the bond between the spider string and the concrete? Or even the concrete itself, since it's gonna have to withstand so many newtons of pull on such a tiny spot.

I remember reading the 80's run of the spiderman comics (my aunt was part of the team translating it for norwegian), and the thing that impressed me the most about spiderman was exactly the fact that he friggin managed to not only recreate, but improve upon the design of spidersilk. So he had small rectangular packets about an inch in length, worn on his web shooter. Now, the amount of spidersilk he uses per outing is pretty big, so I can see why the Toby Mcguire films decided on "nah, he's just got semi-magical glands now" instead of building a web shooter. Looking forward to see you tackle this.

Someone else already mentioned the fact that spider webs stretch so that would change the numbers which you didn't cover. But what I think should also be discussed is the "stickiness". Multiple times he's shown catching things incredibly heavy i.e. a bus, cable car, buildings to stop a train and strictly relying on the surface tention to have enough grip to stop them. The web doesn't wrap around the items like you would with a rope or grappling hook so how much stickiness and surface area would be required to support that much weight?

the fact that Peter Invented his web Fluid (and web shooters really) is kinda a Big deal, it's the part of his character design that's a constant Physical manifestation of his Genius, I mean in Earth 616 he has an IQ of 250, Reed Richards (the guy who figures out new ways to hop dimensions in his spare time) once said that Peter is as Smart as he himself was at his age! Reed Never said anything of the sort to Tony Stark, in fact Tony gets confused when Reed, Hank Pym and Bruce Banner get together and start Talking science in earnest, Tony Just flat out can't keep up with these guys... Translation: Peter's smarter than Tony, he just doesn't the Experience, Cash or spare time to do what Tony does... Heck during the Civil War comics Peter Hacked Tony's Mainframe like it was nothing, while Tony had actively set up protections against him specifically! That said, Peter's web fluid once it's out of his wrists is actually pretty close to real Spider Silk in Tensile Strength, well the basic recipe is anyway, Peter's made a few Variants for special occasions or Villain countering over the years. Such as Webs that Burn, webs that Electrocute, Acid Resistant webs and a bunch of others I'm too lazy to enumerate... Anyway my point being that the Webshooters are FAR more Efficient than an underground Spider Silk Farm, and more versatile to boot... that and spiders don't tend to play nice with each other, they're kill/eat each other if they get too close to one an others territory. Someone In real life decided to make a dress (looks like a poncho really) made from spider silk... it took them about 3 YEARS to collect enough silk to make that one dress, and they were being as efficient as possible considering how much space "Spiders farms" take up in order to avoid the spiders eating each other... now if Peter could do like Ant-Man Does with ants but with spiders, and he had a few million of them constantly Spinning webs, or some genetically Engineered super spiders designed to Crap out Absurd amounts of Silk in a Specialized High tech lab, then sure the underground Silk farm would work... but he has neither, so he'll have to make due with his far more efficient fluid brewed with his home chemistry set!

Another problem: Not only the spider silk would have to hold the force you estimated, but also the "connection" between the silk and the building or whatever he shoots it onto. Not sure if spider silk is adhesive enough for that.

So I can build a web shooter, have millions of spiders I harvest for silk, make sticky shoes & gloves, then become spider man? I'm on board then. Oh also martial arts training, a witty sense of humor & quipping.

I think you got the weight wrong if we are considering Spider-Man 3. He has to live with the weight of (at least partially) ruining that franchise.

Now you just have to tell us how the spider bite gave Peter superpowers, Kyle.

There's actual science behind weaving spider silk for actual use. I had to do a research project in Biology in 10th grade. There's a company that is making spider slik applicable to be used. They take the genetic coding for spiders that allow them to produce silk and rewriting it into that of a cow so when a cow gets milked it's milk will also contain spider silk. They plan to make stuff like body armor seeing it's more lightweight than Kevlar and has the capability to have a higher resistance to stuff like bullets

Kyle's explanations/rants at the end are always the best part of the video, IMO.

IN REAL LIFE HOWEVER spider webs are elastic and to find out the tension you would have to use T=(λX)/l , where λ is the modulus of elasticity, x is the extension and l the original length of the web. Great video non the less :)

Spiderman doesn't shoot one large string of silk, he shoots several thin strings of silk each time, so the force would be divided between multiple strands, not just the one.

Please do a video on Spider-Man's web shooters, like you already mentioned. Calculate the force necessary to shoot the spider webs between buildings. Also calculate the adhesive strength necessary to hold the spider web to buildings. And address the localized adhesive properties of the spider web only at the ends, so Spider-Man can let go of it. And that the web doesn't lose stickiness at the end due to wind resistance and particles in the air that adhere to it as it is being shot at buildings. Fun video. Thanks!

I always saw it as Peter working out how to artificially manufacture spider silk, something I think a lot of scientists have been trying to do for a long time, but made it even stronger and lighter, and then compressed it into his web cartidges.

I think the reason for making synthetic webbing isn't that it's _better_ than real spider silk, per se, it's just that is the only way for P.P. (how often do you think he was called that in grade school?) to get the quantities he needs, and get it as small as he needs (compressed somehow in the cartridges). Another important question, though: given that there are two varieties of silk from any web-building spider (structural and sticky -- one makes the web, transmits vibrations, and allows spider movement, while the other actually catches prey) how sticky can it get, and how strong is the sticky part? We're assuming that random gargoyles and building bricks can withstand the forces involved in SpiderMan's swinging, but what about the point of contact for the strand?

There is actually some research being done on web shooters which contain a polymer suspended in fluid kind of like a can of silly string and when fired those polymers join together to form the long thin strands that we're all familiar with. So actual web shooters might not be that far off in the future.

Not to mention there are different types of spider silk that spiders use for different purposes. Some is used for support lines, while some is the sticky stuff making up most of the web or specifically used for wrapping up their food. Cool stuff.

Only thing that was left out (omitted as it wasn't the point as you measured ability to swing from the spider silk) was if it was possible for the web to maintain its hold on whatever (most) surfaces under such pressure. If you for instance tied this around a tree and used it was a swing sure but could you potentially launch it against anything and the force of roughly 6800N be maintained? This is what I find most fascinating. Could you spray the web to a crane for instance and use the crane's form as the base for the pendulum or would the force of the 6800N estimated naturally detach the webbing?

great episode, but a few things to note. in some comic lines, spider actually emits his own natural webbing just like real spiders do. secondly, i think the created version of his formula works better than carrying around actual spider silk, even if he could, because he carry's it in small light weight cartridges, and can change the formula to change the properties of his web in accordance with his needs.

Okay, I'll admit: I don't quite understand a lot of the math and science behind most of your videos' concepts (due to the fact that I'm a 10th grader in Honors Pre-Calculus and Chemistry), but I do find them very entertaining.

@ end - Spider "Sense" was not supposed to be related to the ability to sense movement on a web, that is a newer concept in the canon. It was the enhanced form of proprioception several species of spider demonstrate which allows them to avoid predators and find prey in absence of light or thermal sensors. (the prevailing theory is still that they have a less evolved form of echo-sense, or echolocation [except that they do not produce the original sound])

I honestly sometimes feel like I'm the only one that preferred the Organ Web launchers from the first set of movies. I don't know why going back to the machines was done considering I recall in an interview Stan Lee said if he'd have known anything about Genetics when Spiderman was created, he'd have just made the launchers organic from the start.

Overcomplicated deduction of centripetal acceleration man. Centripetal force = (mv^2)/R; F = ma. Therefore, the acceleration caused by the centripetal force, then, substituting force, you get: (mv^2)/R = ma, cancel out the mass, and voilà, a=(v^2)/R. Spider-Man would not shoot webs out of his butt if they were organic. To harvest webs scientists have spliced spider genes with goats so they can make lots of silk. Where does this silk come from on goats? It's in their milk! Nipple webs! Can you imagine Spider-Man shooting webs from his nipples and swing around town on them? SEXY!

Hi Nerdist, just before starting rambling, big fan of your work :) I think at the end bit of you talking about spiderman not having any spider-like powers is a bit wrong... if you were talking about one single spider giving him his powers you may be right, but it was a special modified spider(not sure about this but fused alot of traits of other spiders in it) that bit the guy... as an example,im not sure if you are familiar with an anime called terraformars, but they went in depth with alot of biology data of alot of animals, one of which is a type of spider that does have a kind of sixth sense based on movement(not on a web), it can react pretty fast and accurately to anything on its surroundings + super strenght based on it's size, the only thing is that it had low stamina... so yeah spiderman does use spider-like powers in my humble opinion :)

He has to criticize the fact that many features of spiderman are not unique to spiders in every spiderman video xD BTW I think the spidey sense idea comes from the hairs on a spider's body that detect changes in air pressure from every direction, aswell as their many eye's, of which some point upwards or backwards, making it hard to surprise a spider. Also some spiders like wolf spiders and jumping spiders are very fast, can jump very well, are agile and have great senses, so many of spiderman's abilities are actually quite spider-like IMO. Of course the web and wall crawling also match, so even though many of spiderman's features are not unique to spiders, the combination of all of them only match spider abilities.

one thing to consider is that peter makes the webbing as a pressurized chemical that the bite "taught" him how to make (there are several cases in comics and show that the shooters are damaged and there was a explosion of webs) so its is "organic" he just lacks the biology to produce it internally

In the second series of Spiderman films and a bit from the first Sam Raimi Spiderman film, the spider that bit Peter was part of a genetic experiment to increase the rate at which spiders produce their webbing and increase its tensile strength. The same way real scientists are taking genetic material from spiders, the part that produces spider silk, and transferring it to goats (or cows) to see if they can produce spider silk from their milk rather than having to 'milk' spiders to get the same substance.
