Hello everyone,
Today we head off to Wales for a glorious day at the Welsh Highland Heritage Railway, looking at their number 1, a locomotive that started off like a traditional Ruston, and is now very different.
If you want more information on the WHHR, have a look at their website here: www.whr.co.uk/
If you would like to get involved and help run the railway, they're always looking for more volunteers here:

I can add a bit of info, it was my dad who rebuilt it into its current form in the early 80's. I remember him saying to me you can tell it was built by an engineer as you can lift the whole body and cab straight off so you've got full access to everything if you need to fix it. He was also really chuffed a couple of years ago when IP engineering decided to make a model of it.

That really does look like an American industrial locomotive. I like it. With the roof profile and large windows It sort of looks like one of EMD’s SW-series switchers, shrunk down into a tiny package.

I helped refit the gearbox on this loco back in 1982. I also helped erect the big carriage shed. I did a lot of welding back then and i repaired the water tank at Portmadoc because it had a leak. It was a great time to be a volunteer. I was 18! I often wonder how many of the old gang are still knocking about from those days? Good times.

That has been reworked so well. Maybe if Ruston may have had to go down the different engine route due to emissions etc. Its essentially like the GB Railfreight rework's of old diesel locomotives.

We'd call that a "critter" over here if it really was one of ours. Critters were common in places where there was a need to move railcars, but a larger switcher would be unsuitable. Interestingly enough, there are some companies over here that build new critters out of the trucks/traction motor assemblies sourced from old road locomotives like the GP and SD series. Slap a body and an engine on top of the truck, instant locomotive/railcar mover.

Is it wrong that I love this, even though I live in Lincoln, home of Ruston? Whilst I wish that it had a larger Ruston engine inside, I understand that they're kinda hard to come by. I wonder if Siemens has anything suitable considering they now own a large chunk of the ex Ruston works, (the ones that haven't been demolished at least)

I’m new to your channel, so these questions might seem stupid, but how do you get a “driver’s license” for driving a train? Also, I’m a bit confused by these small trains. I know for heritage lines it’s hard to find rolling stock, but, how many cars could these engines pull? These small trains seem to fail the economies of scale. I know that engines have come a long way, but these just seem weird to me and perhaps a bit pointless. I know these trains aren’t pointless, or companies would make them, but asan American, I just don’t understand these trains. Love your videos and the channel. Just trying to learn about other country’s industries and histories. Also, who owned the railways. I’m listening to a book about the US transcontinental railway and it seems that whoever placed the rails, owned the rails, but was wondering if that was, and is, the case in the UK. Any books and/or advice would be gratefully appreciated (other than reading Wikipedia articles).
@lmm
@lmm 2 жыл бұрын
Heya, Each heritage railway in the UK is its own organisation with its own rules and regs. To be able to drive one would have to pass their examination. One gets 'passed out' as a driver by volunteering and spending time learning how these things work. I have been volunteering at some places for 15 years. In this form, she'll shift in excess of 100 tonnes. The train we haul in the video is just a short demonstration, although many railways did operate such things. You need to realise that the application of railways in the UK and US are different - we never travelled the distances you did, and trains like this represent the small companies serving just a few places.

Big standard gauge railways aren't doing great due to the coal issues but it has made running a bit more interesting as the Severn Valley Railway puts on two steam locomotives and two heritage diesel locomotives and a few other railways have done similar, so there is a fare bit of variety to watch running on the line. The narrow gauge railways are ok with the coal shortage as they are starting to use the lower emission E coal which is ideally suited for their locomotives.

It's mostly blown out of proportion. Coal is readily available. Price has gone up, but there isn't a shortage.
