On a recent instrument training flight I realized Christophe was ready for a check ride. I mean, beyond the skills to perform the tasks which he has had down for a while, what separates success from failure? In this video, I will bring you into my head a bit while we look at what he's doing well and when it starts to fall apart. Fly Your Best!
I've got videos and podcasts coming pretty much week over week in 2019. Stay tuned to the Facebook page for all the updates and for more information on The Finer Points visit our website -

So true about the thing you said about CFIIs. As I think to myself being task saturated in an instrument approach, I realise that I use the last 5% of my brains to make the radio calls. However, if I have an instructor, or god forbid, an examiner, sitting next to me, that 5% would go up in smoke. CFIIs gotta remember when task saturating their student that they too are a task. Being instructed while flying a plane is a task.

strange this came up the very day my son passed his IFR check ride. I had to watch and see what happens because he said it was the most intense flying he has done. 2hr ground, 3.5hr flying non-stop testing. He is a 300hr pilot and we flew his PA22/20 from california to Oshkosh so not really a rookie, still said it was intense WOW.

Also working on my instrument training...I’ve used your recommendations since starting ppl to standardize my briefs and stay ahead of the plane. Sometimes I appear in control and ahead of the plane but inside I’m a mess...just need to have good habits and anticipate the next action required...and maybe the next and the next 😉

Ken Cobb- an awesome DPE out of NorCal , he will fail your instruments on approach and try to oversaturate you by talking and trying to distract you; as I’m sure many DPEs will do on instrument checkrides.... as a pilot your PRIORITY is AVIATE and NAVIGATE, then communicate . If things are becoming saturated , focus your process on flying and navigating to safety . AND MEMORIZE the crap out of AVEF and MEA in case of a communication failure , especially in IMC - you won’t have time to think about remembering what AVEF and MEA means if u forget , so u better just know it for every stage of flight!

Joe H sounds like someone needs to take their happy pills! I have multiple checklists and they are all ok, but a bit long. True, I can make my own, but I was more interested in seeing his format since I would still have to translate it all into spanish and rewrite if need be...so its not really a question of laziness. Have a nice day.

Hi David, I don't have an "IFR" checklist per se, I use a checklist provided in the aircraft by the San Carlos Flight Center. I get a lot of interest there though and am working on one of my own, stay tuned.

holyteejful - Jepessen charts are chock full of info in an intuitive, comprehensive way that makes sense. The only thing it’s missing is a detailed taxi diagram with runway length. Have your full page airport taxi diagram ready.

The Finer Points legitimate question. How would you fly an approach with the backup instruments only in a G1000 setup like that? I could be wrong, but I didn’t see backup navigation equipment. PAR?
@russellkeith1284

I know that this was for "training" but why would you do an approach to minimums with your primary display inop. Part of flight training and the check ride evaluation is instilling good decision making. With a primary instrument failure a better decision would to divert to one of the alternate airports in your IFR flight plan that has better weather or ask ATC who in the area is VFR and divert to better weather. Then you can ask the question as to why the primary went dark. Was it a short circuit that will eventually pull down the entire electrical system?
@TheFinerPoints
@TheFinerPoints 5 жыл бұрын
I can see that point if this were a real failure, but it was training. In training sometimes you "swing with two bats" -- that is, make it harder that it will probably ever be. In "real life" I would urge anybody to proceed VFR to the closest airport if able. There was nothing unsafe about what we were doing (tops were about 1,300 bases about 400' and we had plenty of instrumentation.
@kentd4762
@kentd4762 Жыл бұрын
If you train for the absolute worst, then that'll help in real life. I'd bet that Jason discussed with Christophe the decision making process about alternates, trouble-shooting, etc.

I have always STRONGLY disagreed with treating simulated emergencies like they are not real emergencies. On my checkride, when we go partial panel, the first thing I do is inform ATC that "as a training exercise, I have lost primary flight instruments and I am now hand flying with zero automation". Why? I treat it as an emergency.... in real life, it would absolutely be an emergency and I don't want no crossing restrictions or other unnecessary crap from ATC when dealing with an emergency. Part of being a decent pilot is being in-charge... and that includes the examiner. If he don't like it, he can GTFO and walk home.
@TheFinerPoints
@TheFinerPoints 5 жыл бұрын
I like that. Letting ATC know what the situation is (even in training) is a great idea. Using reversionary mode in the G1000 is still light years beyond what you'd have available in a standard panel airplane ... and this was very soft IFR in that the tops were 1,300 and 10 miles inland the skies were clear, but I like your thinking and the tip, thx
