For some extra context, よん is used more than し (at least, when counting in general) because し is also one of the readings of the kanji for death (死), which gives it a bad connotation. It's the same with 9--きゅう is used more (in general) than く, because く is one of the readings of the kanji for suffering (苦). Feel free to correct me if I said something incorrect!

I am Japanese and I add a trivia about it. In some hotels in Japan, 4 has that bad connection to death, so there is no room numbers which include 4 except for floor number. 101, 102, 103, then 105… None of us care about it anymore though lol

While I was learning my first 15 kanji, my mom asked me how to count in Japanese. I taught her 1-5 because she said that’s how much she could handle learning (3 strokes messed with her memory) but now every day since she’s randomly, multiple times a day, pointed at me and recited 1-5 in Japanese because she’s so proud of remembering it. Her other favorite words are Neko (she will sing songs to our cat but replace half the words with Neko) and Ganbare

Japanese has about 4 separate number systems that it uses for different cases. Native Japanese numerics are preferred for つ "tsu" (eg 9 is ここのつ "kokonotsu"), and there's a few small things like 8歳 (8 years old" being はっさい "hassai" rather than はちさい "hachisai")

TIP: if you’re counting from one to ten casually, I suggest saying (1)いち (2)に (3)さん (4)し (5)ご (6)ろく (7)しち (8)ひち (9)きゆう (10)じゆう it sounds more natural and it’s how most people would say it! @@danishzuhairi338 I think you’d be okay if you move to Japan not knowing Japanese, you can learn some as you live there. I suggest learning hiragana (thats the script I wrote in my original comment) it’s not too hard. there’s some signs in Japan that have English on them, and some people know basic English words like you might know basic Japanese words. it would definitely be easier if you learned some, but overall if you’re up for a challenge and willing to try you can do it:)

Wow, that's quite cool! I especially like how the 10+(1-9) are constructed. In English, it's eleven, twelve, then pretty much (3-9)-teen. In Russian, it's a bit simpler because that suffix is for all numbers in that range, but the japanese scheme is just so elegant and simple, I love it.

百 (ひゃく(hyaku)) = 100 背 (せん(sen)) = 1,000 万 (まん(man)) = 10,000 in Japanese, numbers are grouped by 4 digits instead of 3. so 10,000 is a single word (man) and written like 1 0000 or 万. Also the pronunciation of some numbers change based on other numbers that preceed or follow it. Like hyaku (100), when preceded by san (3) becomes san byuaku (300) or roku(6) which changes both itself and hyaku(100) into roppyaku (600) The Japanese number system has always been really interesting to me.

Still no idea what the difference between yon/shi and nana/shichi is

Iirc I don't think there is much difference but just know the first versions are more commonly used. Also I think shi is somewhat related to death so people don't tend to use it unless it's for spooky stuff

I'm still a beginner, but so far, I have the impression that which one is used depends on the context, and you just have to get used to it!

Four - 四 (shi) can sound like death - 死 (shi). Shichi for seven - 七 is avoided for the same reason. Similarly the number, 42 (shini - to die) is avoided.
